How are 5040 taans possible and how did he reduce to 168? My mathematical formulation 1. If we select only 1 note - Sa - we get only 1 permutation. ie. Sa. 2. If 2 notes are selected - Sa, Re. We get 2 permutations: Sa-Re, Re-Sa. 3. For a selection of 3 notes - Sa, Re, Ga - we get 6 permutations. Sa-Re-Ga, Re-Sa-Ga, Sa-Ga-Re, Ga-Sa-Re, Re-Ga-Sa, Ga-Re-Sa. .. For 7 notes we get nPr = n! / (n-r)! = 7p7 = 5040 Now, as Ustad Amir Khan Sahab says " To remember these 5040 permutations, while not impossible, is certainly difficult. I have been doing this since my childhood and have found that if you can master the 4 notes permutations, it helps greatly in the elaboration of any raag" So we put this constraint we 7*4p4 = 7*24=168! Q.E.D

While your mathematical ability seems strong I'm still unsure of as to what your original question was . It seems like you just stated it's possible to have that amount of permutations .

Although I consider Bade Ghulam Ali Khan and Bhimsen Joshi to be the greatest classical vocalists ever, simply because of their versatility. HOWEVER, I rate Amir Khan as the GREATEST KHYAL vocalist ever. Because his style is pure and simple. Only my humble opinion.
