Ultimate jugalbandis have been gifted to us by these two legends. Perfect unison, perfect understanding, perfect renditions. All of those were extremely popular in their times. Sadly, we hardly get to listen to those iconic performances these days. The younger generation might not even be aware that such gems exist in our musical heritage.

His greatness as a musician is beyond any doubt. A shehnai player of his calibre is yet to appear. But he was also a great human being. As a devout Muslim, he prayed five times a day and did not give any concerts in the days of Muharram. But he was also perfectly secular in outlook and happily performed in Hindu temples. Such combinations of great musician and great human being are indeed very rare.

No matter how many times one listens to this great master one is never satisfied. The raga Behag evokes strong emotions in me:my old father(he was 65 when I was born)would hum charming Kambhoji into my 4 yr-old ears. When I listen to Bismillah(even the name evokes mellifluousness, doesn't it?)doing the Jaiajaivanti I start crying -- reaching out to my happy childhood with my softspoken and sweet singer father of mine. The Deshakshi song of Swati Tirunal brings about the same joy and sadness as B

I was born catholic, studied or tried to study, reading the Koran translated . Since childhood confronted wityh external language disputes etc . Had to change school and go to a boarding school of jesuits age ten to study in french. I have a french grand mother mother side and an english grand mother father side , her grand mother was some rich indian girl married to a british officer. I am a buddhist and have alwa&ys been one in my heart and soul as I realise when studying the matter . my B name is Karma Zeupa Gyamtso and my master is Lama Karta R. whoom I've had the fantastic' luck'to meet in 1999 at a Gyalwa Rinpoche's teaching on how important it was is to be prepared to die, to be ready any time . Feeling death at my door, I went to follow dharma teachings and practice but they've taught me how to live again . iow laugh, take pleasure, relaxing etc ! now 14 years later and it is I who was present to Lama's departure instead of the other way round! he was 53 and full of merit besides being so important to so many ! love and compassion , base of altruism , root of all wellbeing ! South India's Muthuswami Dikshitar goes to Kashi and comes across Jaijaiwanti; he comes back home and pens a lovely "Chetashri Balakrishnam" in a slightly modified called "Dwijavanti" and fills the hearts of serious Carnatic music rasikas far and wide with joy and cheer. There is a song "Akhilandeshwari" in Dwijavanti wrongly attributed to the Dikhshitar great; however, it is beautiful and popular. Even the great Lalgudi Jayaraman played that song often, though, Madurai Mani Iyer never sang it as he went on to sing Chetashri for long time. MDR for some reason never sang it. Bismillah Khan remains the very best of our Hindustani music. In the nowadays India one must pay respect to maha ustads such as Bismillah Khan while living in mostly Hindu Kashi went on singing Hindustani songs mostly on Hindu gods even as he minded his religious business praying at a mosque nearby his residence. No one bothered; no marches on the streets; all happily lived their own lives; now Sabarimala and all these religious conflicts out in sad display even in the progressive state of Kerala. Even his stage demeanor was the most placentious. Every now then he would sport a white Gandhi cap. Even in multi colours his cap had the Gandhi cap design any way. He looked magnificent in any colour. Shehnai has that innate design in its sounds to remind the listener of the life and sounds and yes the dust and poverty of North Indian villages of innocent, poor and loving people. There is so much sadness from poverty, and yet there is cheerfulness in their meager lives. As the crescendo doubles up that is what we are reminded of: even in despair there is a lot to cheer : just being alive, I believe.
