Thirakwa playing at Master Krishnarao's residense on his 60th Birthday.The Lehra player was not a professional, Ustad spent some twenty awartans singing the lehra with the harmonium player. But continued to play despite the handicap.This recording is an excellent example of his keeping a SUR in his relas and kaydas.

I had frequent meetings with Respected Ustaad Ahmad Jaan Thirakwa as my father has been his Gandaband Shagird at Lucknow. He was truly and in real sense termed as Tabla Wizard of India !

On Friday night on the 21 August 1970 I went to a concert hall in Bombay (Mumbai) with some friends to hear some indian Music. I had not heard much music on my trip to India so far so I was excited. We saw a very old man (he was around 80 then) being led on to the stage by some younger men. He sat down and started tuning the tabla. Then unknowingly the concert started. He started with a single stroke at the tabla, then nothing, I thought he was mad. Then another stroke and after a while another one. He had in fact begun a tala which I had not understood. Gradually it developed into a an intricate tabla feast with exquisite beats, faster and faster. I could not beleive it, he was almost 80! So grateful that I was bold and a bit stupid to travel all the way to India on road and rail, it cost me 35§ to get to Delhi from Stockholm, Sweden. That journey has given me so much, still today.

The rau rela is now played with दिंतिरकीटतक instead of hitting that दिं on the लव. But he was Thirakwa saaheb. Extraordinary practice and extraordinary sweetness

@@shindhumusic9329 I was saying that in 1:45 when the rau starts, its bols are dhatirakitatak dhentirakitatak dhatirakita So that dhen is supposed to be played with an open sound and that is difficult So people do a shortcut where they play din ( sideways) instead of dhen ( on the sur )
