Please remove the word "vs" and replace it by "and". Jugalbandi is not about competition (even if it is between 2 Tabla players). This is an instrumentalist and a Tabla player.

I saw this pair in Los Angeles in about 1981. I crashed the dressing room between sets. There were other crashers, but all gathered around the santoor. With sort of mocked hurt feelings Hussein said "No one is interested in tabla". I said 'I am. Can I play yours'. He smiled and said "Sure'. So I did. Can you imagine John Bonham or Kieth Moon letting you bang their kit during set break?

@@dbriefed Yeah it actually did. Their second set blew the house down. Nice tabla set. Guess if you're the best in the world you can buy good drums. Zakir was nice. His father, Alla Rakah, was Ravi Shankar's tablaist for over 30 years. Guess talent runs in the blood.

Realized there was a kinda noisy guy in the row in front of me. It was Ravi Shankar who owned the record company. I have seen many Indian masters. Ali Akbar Khan, etc. Boy is Kahn an aggressive player. Sounds like he's going to crush his fret board. The performance hall was the chapel at Occidental College in LA. It's all marble with a dome over the stage. Unbelievable accoustics. Shankar's daughter Anoushka has become a world class sitarist herself.

A lot of Westerners (I am one) don't realize that at least 50 percent of these Indian compositions are improv. I have seen Hussain many times including his fusion band Shakti with John McLaughlin. That group broke some sweat. Mclaughlin had that weird accoustic guitar with the scalloped fret board so he could do quarter tones. It's a fantastic musical tradition. No idea why it is not more popular in the West.

I was 11 (I am 67 now) when I first heard you guys and Hariprasad Chourasia Ji and Brijbhushan Khabra play at the 'NATIONAL SCIENCE CONGRESS' at IIT Powai in1968 have been of all of you since then.
