I agree. The talent is there, and they deserve better. There was no triangular passing, no overlapping runs, no support on breakaways, no communication, no creativity, and too many desperation balls in the air. These are basic issues that Vlatko hasn’t corrected since the last Olympics. His choices and his “Everything will work itself out” approach have hurt this team. I’m happy the US went through, but they won’t beat Sweden.

The British commentary of this game summed it up. The USA used to win purely on physical dominance because they were the fittest, fastest and biggest team in the sport because they were the only well funded female program. So they were the only professionally prepared team in an amateur sport for many years, giving them a massive advantage for 20 years. Now real soccer nations are funding their female programs, their tradition are pushing the female game to new levels tactically and technically and USA are not up to this level tactically or technically and the general weaknesses in USA youth development are now being exposed in the female game for the first time. If I was a USA I would be worried because Netherlands And Portugal are not the top tier European teams and they struggle to beat both. The US soccer media can scapegoat the coach, but he is not the one who cannot maintain ball possession in midfield. It is the new world and US women’s soccer is being left behind tactically and technically and picking the fastest and biggest players no longer works. You need ballers and USA has none.

Coming from a nation with a proper soccer culture like in Europe and South America, you're bound to be better. But just remember this is ONLY because USA does not have a proper soccer culture as a result of us having other sports being more popular for over 120 years that emphasized physicality over finesse. If we equalized funding from beginning from other nations to women's soccer, but also equalized and USA had a proper soccer culture for over 120 years like Europe and South America, USA would be at the top in both men's and women's, not dominating, but most successful overall. The premisse is wrong: large wins are not indicative anymore of a team's potential. We saw it with Spain: they destroyed Zambia and got humiliated afterwards by Japan (even when we factor in the lackadaisical attitude due to being qualified). Or Germany obtaining a large win and then losing to Colombia. US fans have to ditch that attitude of always expecting impressive performances because the era of total US dominance in football is over. The playing field has levelled up. The US will continue to be among the best, but group stages in the future will not be cakewalks anymore!

Ok here’s the thing. Women from European and South American countries comes from nations with SOCCER CULTURE. Nations with soccer culture understand how to develop players properly and that you need technique and creativity. If ⚽ was always our top sport, we’d have this ⚽ culture. But we don’t. What we the USA need on both the men’s and women’s side, is to end pay to play, and EMPHASIZE TECHNIQUE AND CREATIVITY. All of our development should always have players dribbling the ball and drills related to that. No more running and sprints. At the pro level, you’ll get to a good enough physical level. We can’t play basketball on a soccer pitch. We can’t just have ordinary stuff like getting it wide and crossing it in, or “going between lines” and all this rudimentary approaches. Sure, being proficient and professional in these instances is fine, but we need to have players who are comfortable dribbling through and passing through TIGHT SPACES. And we Americans are at a DISADVANTAGE because we don’t have a proper soccer culture. So we have to acknowledge that not just our men, but our WOMEN are also at a disadvantage in this regard because our country the USA has historically liked sports that focused more on physicality than finesse and creativity. Please US Soccer, on ALL LEVELS, make it so TECHNIQUE AND CREATIVITY are emphasized. America has the most diverse, best sporting population on Earth. If we develop soccer players like a European country, we will be at the top in both the men’s and women’s game

@@AW-zk5qb The cultural argument only goes so far. Japan does not have a soccer culture either. Spain had a very strong soccer culture for long time but did not reach a WC final (on the men's side) till 2010. Besides, girls playing soccer is an integral part of American culture. They aren't good just because a lot of money had been spent in developing the sport in the past few years, but because they have a passion for soccer. The expression "soccer mom" is now part of the common parlance. Amongst girls and female adoescent athletes soccer (along with softball) are the most popular sports.

Vlatko is most certainly the root of the problem. If a team of very good players struggles to keep possession of the ball, it is always the fault of the manager. Possession is 9-tenths of the law because you need to possess the ball to score. Vlatko's job as Manager is to define the teams playing style and then drill it into his players. Clearly, he failed in this department. The USWNT cannot string more than 3 or 4 passes together before launching the ball up the field for one of the forward players to chase. They don't know how to play to feet and through the thirds (certainly not like the European sides do) they are way too impatient to get the ball into scoring opportunities. It is very true, Vlatko substitution did not make any sense. He is good at managing plays, that's why the players like him and believe him but these qualities on their own will not win you trophies. Unlike previous women's world cups, even the countries that don't have domestic professional leagues now have a whole bunch of players that play in professional leagues abroad. Last World Cup (2019) Jamaica had maybe one player that played professionally, this time around that figure is closer to 20 out of 23. And it's the same for pretty much all the developing football nations. The USWNT is just not ready to meet this new challenge and Vlatko is not the man to show them how to raise to it.

Spain showed that ball possession means nothing if the team had no idea what to do with it. Spain may have one of the most beautiful playstyle, with a lot of possession, a lot of amazingly accurate passes, but Japan having only 27% of ball possession managed to trash them 4-0
@beyondthepage9389
@beyondthepage9389 Жыл бұрын
@@omargj1 That's where you are wrong, Spain 4-0 loss to Japan shows that ball possession means everything, it is exactly why Japan was able to beat Spain so convincingly. They set a trap for Spain which Spain did not see coming but the trap would not have worked if Japan were not themselves masters at putting those quick intricate passes together to efficiently and consistently catch Spain on the counterattack. Remember Japan with their diminutive players (ala Xavi and Iniesta) also play a ticky-tacky style of football. Japan had maybe 6 or 7 attempts at goal yet scored 4 goals, that is unheard of. The difference was that Japan took the time to figure out how to catch Spain slipping. A team that does not know how to possess the ball like a Spain or a Japan, could not have won the game by four clear goals when there were so few attempts at goal. At their peak, the USWNT never faced teams with the level of skill and passing efficiency that they are consistently facing these days, The world of women's football is improving at a faster rate than the United States because for years the US has been performing close to capacity when the rest of women football was not... because they could not!!! Now that has all changed, the big boys of Madrid, Barcelona, Arsenal, Manchester Utd etc are now supporting women's football and national teams from all over the world are reaping the benefits because they have a number of professional players earning and learning at these big clubs. The US more than ever, finds itself in a situation where it has to drag its bullying, smash-and-grab style of football into the 21st century.

@@omargj1 You speak as if any old team can just keep the ball. Possession means everything because it is not easy to keep the ball from opponents (as good as Spain) who are eager to win it back. Japan was able to make the 27% count precisely because they possess the ball so well. A team that gives procession away cheaply like the united states (because they were good at winning it back) could not have won so convincingly, certainly not with only 27% possession and so few opportunities to score. The US would have needed multiple attempts at goal to score 4 and not concede. A team that possesses the ball well has a solid foundation to build upon. This did not matter to the USWNT before, because they had a solid foundation (when most others did not) and were able to make that the deciding factor. Fitness and speed with high mental status are the decisive factors in sports and football is one of them. Most US players are physically weak and have no speed. Running faster to get the ball and kick it technically harder as much as possible to score the goal is what is needed from a good goal scorer. Despite it is not supported by the offense, defense is doing well. However, the game against Sweden will not be easy especially the middle field is not taking its role.

Too much US media hype, too much American patriotic drum beating and American exceptionism myth believing. Tobin Heath is the only former USWNT player being truthful and admitting the USA has been caught up physically and left behind tactically and technically. She said the USA can no longer beat teams just by having fast and powerful players. US players have an egos and don’t want to admit their era of success was based around just being fitter than the other teams so is coming up with excuses. Why is the coach benching Rapino? She's a beast and a legend who can still play. She's still best player on the team. Alex only got some good balls when Rapino got in the game. The game completely changed when Rapino got in. I'll be blunt...those new players cannot play at this level. They only posses high school ability. Move too slow, think too slow along with their clumsiness. The only new player that can really play is Girma. I thought Smith was an embarrassment to herself. The problem is if the only reason the USWNT was dominant was fitness and speed and still is the idea around how to select the players for the team why was Rapinoe called when she has not been able to play 2 full matches in a row for the last couple of years and has become way too slow? Horan has been playing in France for year and half and previously played for 3 years, and she is not showing the suppoused superior technique European football have, even she looks weaker and slower, and still is a regular starter for Olympique Lyon that is one of the most overstacked European teams. No doubt that the game has been improving around the world but that is not an excuse for the underperformance from Vlatko's team.

The USWNT is clearly in a down cycle. The question is how many years will it last. The NWSL is now a junior league to Europe. It was easy to see that the Netherlands and Portugal were superior technically and more organized than the USA. What Carli wants to say is that since the last World Cup the USWNT players have been more focused on marketing themselves and political wokeness, not on advancing the NWSL and USA soccer. Portugal was clearly the better side and should have advanced.

France from 1998-now would be USA from 1930 to now
