I graduated from Utah along with my wife. We had season tickets for years. All of that time BYU football crushed Utah, years! We couldn’t even give the tickets away. Then many “fans” then became obsessed in trying to denigrate a religion. Then after a streaker laid down on the 50 and a year later after a “fan” urinated on the field after the game and constantly hearing vulgarities, we stopped going and haven’t gone back. Schools rivalries are fine religious bigotry is not.

The weirdest part about Harlan's comments was saying he's not happy to be in the big 12. Being mad at the refs and wanting to vent and complain to the commissioner isn't a great look but comes off as a fan being fired up about losing a game. But talking about not wanting to be in the league seems to definitely expose some deeper resentment. Feeling that you got robbed by the refs shouldn't just instantly make you want to change to a different league if something else wasn't already there. And it's not like the B1G is looking to pick up a team that is at the bottom of the big 12.

I like the Utah guy but don't think his take is entirely accurate. What Mark Harlan did was a culmination of a lot of frustration and not just a heat of th moment / one time thing. Utah did NOT want to join the Big12. It was excruciating for them. Here's why: - Utah was playing with the Blue Bloods of the Pac12, USC, UCLA, Wash, Oregon and even academic juggernauts like Stanford and Cal. - Utah grew to be the dominant team in the Pac. They were the bullies - Utah relished being in a P5 and BYU stuck as an Independent - Utah had an edge with big recruits in state. They were a P5 team. Utah's brand was soaring Here's the current reality - Utah was never a Blue Blood while it played in the Pac. - THOSE DAYS ARE OVER - Utah plays NO blue bloods in the Big12. Good teams but OSU, KSU an ISU are not blue bloods - Utah is on an even playing field now with the Y and the P4 platform of the Big12 will allow BYU's brand to shine. - Utah's brand is in a free fall and part of the reason is being entitled and reactive Utah has become the heel of the Big12 and a villain in college football. A cultural shift is needed at the AD and HC level.

Not to mention that BYU is starting to win the recruit battle. For the last 15 years, Utah was getting all of the top recruits except for the occasional "legacy recruit" (Whittinghams words, not mine). Look at last years recruiting class. Utah had 13 recruits. Compare it to the top 13 recruits BYU had. They are on par with each other. You'll find that of those 13 recruits BYU had, the majority of them also had offers from Utah. They chose BYU over Utah.

I work for BYU. I am at the stadium for all home games and on the field for parts of the game. At the last BYU/Utah game at LVES a Utah fan saw my badge and called me by name, when I looked toward him he splashed vodka in my face from a plastic flask. Then he told me what he thought about Mormons, which was of course an ignorant and uninformed brain vomit. Then later at the same game a Utah Fan threw a first down signal in front of some fans and punch a BYU fan in the nose. He was unapologetic and was removed from the game. It has gotten out of hand and it is completely unhealthy for the state of Utah.

The level of animosity next year is going to be off the chart!

I genuinely feel bad for the amount of sh*t JT has to scoop up after Harlan’s comments. The guy’s left with the impossible task of making it look like Harlan didn’t actually mean what he said. The fact that neither the university nor Taylor Randall has released any statement to reprimand or distance themselves from Harlan’s words and actions is pretty telling. Harlan’s own response just admits that his approach was wrong and that he’ll take the punishment-but there’s no hint he actually disagrees with or apologizes for what he said. The U's perception is now locked in for the rest of the league, and it’s not going away just because they’re leaving it to fans with a mic to try to cover up this massive sh*tshow.

I didn’t see what byu fans did but I’m still guessing it’s not as bad as pouring beer on the QBs mom’s head of the opposing team. Just saying.

Hey Guys.... Harlan has made his own bed. He really does need to lay in it. His 'non apology' statement should have probably finalized any 'benefit of the doubt' the guy deserved. It might be time for Harlan to peddle his schtick someplace else. Why? Because the arrogance and conceit that people thought might be there over the last year and Harlans comments from a year ago have now come home to roost. There is no doubt what Harlans sentiments are regarding the B12. IMO it's not repairable moving forward. Especially when Harlan has to work with other AD's around the Conference and also the Conference itself. And how can Harlan's opinion not seep into every aspect of the Sports Department at the U? It has... Whit has made enough quazi statements about 'not being in the B12 long' that those statements taken in the light of what's transpired the last week now seem to have context as well. At this point? Utah needs to Punt and regroup....

Attached to BYU is the story of the Utes. They've built their own legacy in the last decade, and good on them. But if you spend any time on the socials, it's as obvious as it's ever been that for the majority of Ute fans who post and take the time to troll online, BYU is the frame of reference.

Something interesting about BYU is that it attracts kids who may not be interested in the party atmosphere on many college campuses. Also, its conservative politics. It will be interesting to see how the program evolves over the next decade. I think it is possible that BYU athletics become more religiously diverse by recruiting students who may come from religious backgrounds and appreciate that BYU remains true to their religious principles. Granted, there have been times where athletes have gotten a free pass (looking at you, Jim McM). But for the most part, BYU is serious about its honor code. And even though I wouldn't want to agree to some parts of the honor code, I respect that BYU tries to stay loyal to their religious commitments and practice.

Retzlaff was looking left that entire play. The player held (JoJo) was the intended receiver. He had the corner beat on an outside release and was bumped, tugged, and then held. Trevor Matich said it was probably a touchdown if he wasn't held. Terry McAulay watched every play on the all 22 and said, "nothing even remotely close to defensive holding occurred against either team. Nothing anywhere near the level of material restriction tha toccurred on the play in question." So it was called consistent, it was a penalty, and it factored into the play b/c Retzlaff held onto the ball watching his receiver get almost taken down.

I really wish we could hear JT’s thoughts on why Harlan went to Big 12 membership. Colossal judgment lapse aside, what does conference affiliation have to do with disagreement over a missed call? Of all the petulant things he could have said, why that topic? I just don’t see a plausible explanation other than that Harlan showed his true colors and that of the Utah brass, especially considering the non-apology from Harlan and the non-response from the Utah president. Someone please correct this in a way that makes sense. Maybe it doesn’t matter since Utah’s already in with nowhere better to go. But Drake said it best, when your AD is giving voice to the 5% of crazy, toxic fans who exist in every fanbase it’s a problem.
@aBrewster2911 күн бұрын
I’ll add, even with their successes, Utah never rose to the prominence of USC and Oregon in the PAC12-that was always David slaying Goliath. You don’t have that dynamic in the Big 12 anymore. This is a league of peers, and Utah’s leadership just can’t seem to read the room.
@ericm232711 күн бұрын
Harlan wanted the BIG10. That never came. The only 2 options Utah had was to join the BIG12 and take BIG12 money or stay and end up like Oregon State and Washington State. Make no mistake, they are not happy to be here. They are only here because they have no other option to stay relevant.

Drake - I appreciate the balanced approach you are trying to take here, but the "they are both wrong" approach to the game just isn't accurate. While I agree 100% that it would be better if BYU players didn't taunt the crowd, comparing upside down U signs with assault and battery, threats, temper tantrums on camera by administrators... just isn't accurate. I guess I am just tired of the false-moral equivalency. Assaulting and injuring people is not the same as making an upside down U sign. Not even in the same ballpark. Leaving the game you seemed pissed by what you saw but it almost sounds like someone may have persuaded you that BYU is just as bad. It's just not the case. There are things that happen at RES that would NEVER occur at LES - period.

BYU has the highest upside and more resources at the time and it appears they will increase that gap. Plus, thats with coach Whittingham. Im curious who will actually take over for him and how long he last. Im also curious of about how many player enter the portal. Should be fun to watch!
