Hub face is very important. Most 16" trailer tires will extend out past your hub face about 4.5" per tire or a total of about 9" wider than your hub face. So if you had a 60" hub face axle, add 9" roughly on to that and you will have your total outside dimension with the tires on the axle. So your outside to outside measurement would be 69" total wide. The hub face determines how wide you want your trailer to be. If your doing a deck over the tires, then you want the total width of your axle and tires to be just a little bit narrower than the trailer deck, so they wont stick out beyond your trailer bed or deck. If you want a deck over tires to be 60" wide total, then you will have to find an axle hub face + 4.5" per tire = 9" for both, to be maybe 2" per side narrower than your deck, which would be 60" deck - 4" = 56" - 9" = 47" inch hub face that would make your outside tire dimensions be 2" per side less than the trailer deck. Your axle springs seats will already be matched to the axle hub face by the factory, so you do not have to figure it out. If you are doing a deck between the wheels, then figure out how wide you want your trailer to be over all with the tires, then buy the axle accordingly. If you want a 60" wide deck between the wheels, then you will have to figure out how wide your fenders will be beyond the tires as well. Your hub face will have to give you enough clearance so you wont rub against the frame. Your axle spring seat will already be set by the factory for frame placement to their specs, build your frame with that in mind. Dexter Axle has a great website where you can make anything you want for axle sizes and they will make it for you. Their step by step process is awesome, their customer service people will help you get exactly what you want.

Dude you have no idea of how much easier you've just made my day !!! Im retrofitting my military trailer that came with original axle and tires and I was planning on doing a complete axle swap . I was starting to feel overwhelmed over the axle measuring system and specially for a custom application like mine. I needed a 72" hub measurement but with a 40" spring center !!! I couldn't find the right fit . Now with this web site ...... damn couldn't be any much easier !!!! AGAIN THANKS FOR THE VIDEO!

I have an older trailer axle with the wide spread factory hubs. I want to switch out the hubs to 5 lug - 6 lug if I must. Can you tell me what hub I can use on my trailer? I don't have or use trailer brakes

Hi Matt. I love your video's, but in this one you have to understand better why it is important. Short story. 7 years ago we bought a house that we planned to completely remodel. The last owners were hoarders. The yard was overgrown something awful. So I bought a used utility trailer for 500 bucks. Figured I'd use it for the job and then resell it. Well, whomever built this trailer used the correct spring centers, but the hub face to hub face is extremely wide. The trailer is 7 x 12 with 16" sides. Mostly built like you build yours only the cheaped out really bad using 2x3 angle for the 'V' tongue. This thing flexes like you can't believe. Corner to corner looks like springs around incredibly bad. Honestly, I check for broken welds all the time it is so bad! Back to the axle. So the measurement is perfect for the frame, but the hub faces are WAY TOO WIDE. My 7' wide trailer has a side to side wheel width of over 8'9" . That isn't legal anywhere!!! So the axle is at least 2" too long on both ends.. So yeah, it is important to know what you need and order it properly. I have been trying to find 2 15" wheels like the use on car dollies, but it must be a secret as to who sells them... One very nice and smart thing they did building my trailer was to make the ramp/gate heavy duty and removable. Since I am done with the house, but still use the trailer often enough to keep it, I plan to build a new one a bit smaller with a much better tongue 'V' and a proper axle. Thanks for the series. I actually found you through someone else that built a car rotisserie with your plans... I want to build them as well..

Thank you sir!!! I've been feeling like an absolute idiot for the last month because I couldn't figure this out. I went to a supply store and the woman working there treated me like dirt. I was about to give up....but then I found her supplier. Guess who is not going to get my business.
