I just got diagnosed with this. I've had it since I broke my nose in 7th grade. It has never been dealt with by a doctor. They always brushed me off and said it was my sinuses. I am 43. I have terrible migraines, clear fluid leaking from my left nostril, light sensitivity, vertigo, and neck pain. But I have always just dealt with it. I just had it confirmed.

Wow! And no infection. So sorry it wasn’t caught early. How miserable to live with symptoms. My 21 year old son had all those symptoms for 4 months and was brushed off, not tested for meningitis. Started with Valley Fever, fungal crept in to his brain. Caught in Tempe, Arizona. Treated the obvious symptoms like cough, pneumonia and what you had. He moved back home to Vegas. The final doctor ruled it as depression…. and a month later it caused paralysis, and worser things.

For those who have nasal dripping, and are concerned it could be CSF leak- there are other symptoms that go along with CSF leaks. Dizziness, Vertigo, vision blurring, severe headaches when upright, falling over/losing balance, ears ringing, tingling in hands & feet. It's a debilitating condition, so you will be ill. THIS WORKS-- It struck me that one of you mentioned a cracking sound, because I also hear that when trying to get CSF out of my ears! I have a Chiari Malformation Type 1 which causes compression to the brainstem and blocks CSF from draining properly at times. That causes Intracranial Hypertension which gives me nasty compression headaches, but also, has caused my dura to expand and thin like an old balloon. But I have had leaks before, that I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO STOP at home, using the advice of my neurologist. If you get pounding headaches that seem to improve with leaking, here's what to do: My first spontaneous leak happened the day after stepping off a plane from Madrid. I don't know if flying (pressure changes) had anything to do with it, or maybe it was the fact that I wore myself out every day of the trip? But I bent over to eat and felt like I had a sudden nosebleed, but it was clear. My neurologist said one simple way to test that fluid, is to use a glucose test strip, since CSF is richer in glucose. You CANNOT use the glucose strips for testing blood. They must be the kind made for testing urine. The test strips are wide and on a kind of bendy, but sharp plastic. For comfort, and to triple the number of tests available, I cut each strip into thirds, lengthwise, with a very clean pair of scissors. (You don't want to contaminate the strips, giving you falls results.) The testing area is only on one end. This gives you 3 thin strips. Wait until fluid collects in your OUTER EAR to test. Don't shove that bad boy into your ear canal!! For the nose leaks, just use the strip directly on the fluid. Then watch to see if the color changes. The test strip bottle shows the colors for positive and negative. A POS reaction does not insure it's CSF, but if you do it a few times with NEG reactions each time, it is NOT CSF. It's just a preliminary test. If the leaked liquid came out positive: Take a caffeine pill, first thing in the AM and a diuretic (reduces excess fluid in the body) and lay flat. Stay in bed flat! Take another caffeine pill with lunch. The caffeine constricts blood vessels. The two over-the-counter drugs together, with as little upright activity as possible for 3-5 days will often allow the body to heal itself, while there is less pressure on the dura. Then, try not to strain in any way for at least a week. I've used this approach 3 or 4 times and it worked like a charm the first 3 times. But my unique health problems have made my dura very easy to spring a leak. I have been leaking out my ears and occasionally out my nose for 3 years now. My neurologist knows that my Chiari condition can often get worse with a lumbar puncture, and I really need a decompression (brain surgery) worse, to stop the myriad of problems in body functioning, that happen when your brain stem isn't happy. I'm dying anyway though, since I also have progressive Mitochondrial Disease which worsens with any illness or stress to the body, so no more surgeries for me. Anyway, to keep this leaking problem from worsening for these last 3 years, without any surgical patches, my neurologist keeps me on Diamox, which reduces the amount of CSF (and lowers the risk of springing new leaks.) The biggest concern with leaking is that if the CSF can cross the blood/brain barrier to get out of your skull, then there is a higher risk of pathogens finding a way into your skull. Contracting meningitis, for example, can be fatal. I have gotten a vaccine to help protect me from that happening, so for me, we've pretty much covered all we can. I think of the leaking as just a nuisance. I hope my experiences will help someone else!

My Name what about a leak not from the brain but due to Spurs sticking into your spinal cord? Yes I have a leak. The headaches. It's in my lumbar therefore my legs go numb it's hard to walk. But getting up becomes a literal headache from Hades. I'm suppose to see a local surgeon next month. He refused to do my cervical fusion and made me wait a yr where it got worse, now I'm disabled. I worked in ICU as a RRT,ACLS. I had to get another surgeon to do the cervical fusion. Don't you understand just becuz am MRI says one thing, and you do surgery you'll find things are actually worse than what the scan showed. It's happened in every patient I had in the unit and to me and several friends all retired from the medical field. We know our bodies. But yet there are Drs that ignore our voices in the matter. What's can I do to get it to stop? I'm laying, if reclined I get a headache if standing out trying to sit. Even laying it takes it time for the headache too go away. What else can I do?

I have had a perforated septum repair surgery earlier this year and had a Covid-19 test done which apparently pierced the lining causing the leak. I had migraines, neck and shoulder pain and felt sick plus clear fluid coming out of my right nostril.I am lucky that my ENT took me serious and had me travel 500 kms to be treated. He thinks the tear has repaired itself but am on heavy pain medication and have collect any fluid if it happens again. This explains a lot to me thank you.

This happened to me back in May 2024 after I got a lumbar puncture at the ER. The day after I got the procedure , I would get really bad headaches whenever I stood up or even sat up. The only thing that relived 90% of the pain was lying flat on my back. When I told this to the Nurse she didn’t seem to know what the cause was. It was so bad I started vomiting if I stood up for more than 2 minutes. The back of my neck hurt & my lower back as well. It only took me 5 minutes on google to know what it was. I got into an argument with the nurse because she was being rude for no reason when I was in pain & she even refused my painkillers. I managed to leave AMA & after walking for 5-10 minutes I became dizzy & was vomiting & shaking outside. I called 911 & when the fire department came they were downplaying my symptoms & treating me like I was some drug addict. I told them I’m not going back to that hospital & they brought me to another. This hospital told me I was fine & was getting ready to discharge me. My phone was about to die & I was in no shape to drive. I had my friend pick me & I left before they discharged me to prevent being stranded at the hospital with no way home. My friend came & when I got home I suffered stuck in bed for 3 days. Symptoms didn’t improve at all. I was 99% sure I had a CFS leak & I needed a blood patch but I was scared to go to the hospital again. Luckily there was a different one not too far & I called the ambulance & went there. When I explained to the ER nurses & doctor what I was feeling & what I believed was the cause they didn’t question me at all , they brought me into this room & gave me a blood patch & I instantly felt better. I mean like the difference was night & day as soon as they injected my blood in my spinal cord where the leak was from the lumbar puncture & my blood formed a clot to seal the leak It was so relieving. Its crazy how I figured out within minutes what was wrong with me without no experience in the medical field & yet these 2 or 3 nurses I told of my symptoms didn’t seem to know. Or maybe they did but they just didn’t care. Either way people advocate for yourself. Health care workers may have degrees & experience etc but they are still humans at the end of the day & are far from perfect. 90% of the time we know our own bodies & know when something is wrong…

I’m in west Texas I’m concerned about possibly having a slow csf leak. 2018 after my second lumbar fusion and laminectomy I had a large csf tear where I was taken back to surgery the next morning and a skin graft taken from my left thigh was used to patch that tear. A year later I was informed by one physician after an MRI of my lumbar back detected a considerable amount of fluid within L4-L5 area and the surgeon who performed my spine surgery said it was okay and nothing ever done about it shortly after this finding I began having multiple spontaneous nose drainage and other symptoms from headaches to vertigo and loss of feeling in my arms and hands. These episodes occurred every two weeks all occurred in the same way upon waking up in the mornings as soon as I stood up from bed the symptoms started and I was confused could not walk or talk I would have to lay down and every episode lasted for 24 hours not fully subsiding until the next morning. This lasted for 8-9 months. I had to have a third lumbar fusion in September 2020 after that surgery which was a 360 degree surgery I ironically had my last suspicious episode in November 2020. All of the physicians in my hometown did not know what I had or why these episodes were occurring I had numerous testing done and everything I had came back normal the mri’s and ct scans of the brain showed mild issues but according to these doctors nothing to warrant any problems. (Will these symptoms return? I recently had an abdominal MRI that detected mild fluid collection in the lumbar region). I am having chronic low back and hip pain still that is different pain from what I was experiencing before my last lumbar fusion.

I experienced EXACTLY this in 2020. I had the symptoms for about 7 years and was told it was just a migraine and allergies. I had the migraines every single, dizziness, spots in my vision, photophobia, ringing in my ears.. In 2020, I started noticing the leak when I bent down or finished working out. Long story short, I had Idiopathic Intracranial Hypotension with a spontaneous encephalocele and of course CSF Rhinorrhea. I had no prior accident or injury, by the way. After all of the scans and MRIs, they found the encephalocele/hole located in my nasal cavity and saw some of the dura poking out. I had a repair in October of 2020, through my nose. It was successful, but I also had a lumbar drain because the CSF pressure was extremely high. The hole where the drain was never closed up and I had a leak for about a month. It was painful for my head. I had to go back a month later for an MRI on my back. They located the hole and did a epidural blood patch to insert and seal the hole. I had to lay on my back for 3 days.. I didn't find relief until after 3 weeks to a month. I was also on Diamox to keep the csf fluid pressure down, as a precaution. It was also to alleviate the thickness of the optic nerve in my left eye. I had some complications afterward, and I currently still deal with it. But this October will make 2 years since my surgery and I'm doing quite alright! Thanks for this video! This condition is commonly unheard of, so the video is much appreciated.

She had liquid from only one nostril, that liquid was so clear, no smell, solt. When she got meningitis she had mri and ct, and then they are diagnosed some cranial defect. Ent and neurosurgeon doctors repair that defect.

hey, first off, keep calm. obligatory not a doctor, just someone on the neuro ward for guess what keep your back and neck straight (avoid twisting or bending your spine), take acetaminophen/paracetamol and allow for it the appropriate amount of time for it ti take effect. is the headache better, worse, or the same? lay down, flat on your back with no pillow. is it better, worse, or the same? schedule a dr appointment asap to talk about symptoms and concerns, regardless. write everything down you can think of as a recent change before looking up symptoms if possible. start the conservative treatment whole awaiting that dr: bedrest with keeping a straight back, you've got three approved positions basically: on your back, on your side, in recovery position (ensure that your neck is straight and your head is no higher than your hips, which basically means little to no pillows), increase caffeine intake, increase hydration (at least 2-300mg caffeine, and 2litres of water). you should be upright as little as possible, including eating while lying down if you can navigate it. avoid straining in the restroom, take a stool softener if you need. this option is usually given one to three days to work to see if it works. if you can instigate the leak, do so and let it gently drip on something clean and white. if is a csf leak, it will form a halo of very light liquid (dries clear or almost clear) around a circle of blood. if you can instigate it readily (not many can as it can be too uncomfortable to continue, or there just isn't a large amount of fluid regardless), try collecting the liquid on a diabetic test strip. the proteins she talked about (the ones that also cause the halo), metabolise into sugars. this is less accurate than a halo stain, as there are a few things that metabolise similarly, but beta transferrin only occurs in csf. don't try to collect enough to test, 1) it's a lot and most people apparently don't have an active enough leak, and 2) testing things caught in nonstandard containers is a nightmare for pathology due to potential contamination. just stay on bed rest or as close to bedrest as possible, ideally trendelenburg (bed angled 15 to 30 with head down). keep your back/spine as stiff as possible, resisting twisting or bending. wait for neuro to take their sweet time with ordering the head and spine mri. if that doesn't show anything and you're neuro cannot produce an alternative diagnosis (which is not a simple diagnosis of exclusion) and support it with certain test results, then press them that mri/ct are not definitive, and plenty of leaks don't show. a ct myelogram is the gold standard for confirming a leak and finding placement. they'll want to go through the mri/ct of head and spine first though because a ct myelogram involves a lumbar puncture, which can cause a new leaks. opening pressure of lumbar puncture misses low volume (as opposed to high/low pressure) caused headaches and if you need to have a lumbar puncture for the opening pressure, you might as well collect the csf to test and run the ct myelogram.

Ik a KZbin comment section isn’t the place to put this but this is also the most helpful video I’ve seen on it; I’d gone to a weekend long metal festival and while in the mosh pit I’d been hit on the top of my head really hard, I’d refrained from doing anything strenuous for the rest of that day but later when I’d sat down to collect myself I’d suddenly had a whole bunch of fluid come out of my nose, steadily streaming and dripping, it was brownish orangish no doubt initially from blood but it was so watery, later when the festival was coming to an end I’d, excuse me for lack of a better term, snorted a blob of blood when breathing in through my nose really hard and spat it out, it wasn’t mucous of any kind but rather much more viscous almost jelly like, the days that followed I’d be dripping from my nose until a few weeks later it’d almost entirely stopped, the fluid draining to the back of the throat however I think is still super slight almost imperceptible and as the days go by I keep wondering if it’s actually draining anymore or ever did. The fear of it being a CSF leak though is unnerving to say the least

Hi Doctor, My husband underwent endoscopic CSF leak repair along with Septoplasty on July 19, 2017 through his right nostril. As the exact location of the leak was not found, based on the presumptions, doctor sealed the soft areas from where the leak was most likely to occur. He found his right nostril wet and recently he got fluid discharge through his left nostril (nearly 8 drops). My question here is, would the leak sealed on the right side can recur in his left side? If so, should he go for another surgery or wait for it to heal by itself. He underwent a great pain in his previous surgery due to the lumbar drain and also find his head heavy as the exact place of leak was not sealed but had many layers of the tissues and muscles filled in the approximate place of leak. Please let us know what to do further. Thanks REVATHY

What's the name of the Hospital ?
@Scorpioncactusflower Жыл бұрын
First off, get a new surgeon, preferably an actual ENT surgeon. Second, ask how they intend to find the leak. If they don't say how, find another surgeon. The way they SHOULD do it is to clean and dry the sinus cavity, inject a fluorescent dye into your husband's CSF via his spine, then use a tilt table to tilt him head-down. They should have, basically, a tiny suction tube and a tiny camera with a tiny special light attached. They suction fluid until the fluorescent stuff starts coming out, and there it is~ Then, what they SHOULD have done was used the excess tissue from his septoplasty to plug the hole, because it would take and scar more easily. I had that exact same procedure done, just on the left side. If you still need an ENT surgeon and are okay with travel, let me know. I'll recommend you to mine.

I’ve tried every spray and allergy tablet and steroid possible. I’ve taken steroids orally for a week at a time and still my ear fills up. My doctor asked me to capture some that runs out of my left nostril but it’s always just a drop or two that I can capture. I just pinched my nose and forced air into the eardrum and then the fluid began draining. I feel like I get about 30-40% out when I work at it but it quickly fills back up. I’m due to get ear drains next week. I’m hoping it will be easier to capture and sample some of the fluid. I have a headache all the time, mild. I can’t hear well with fluid in the left ear. I’m sleepy all the time. I can get 10 hours of sleep and end up taking 2 hour nap at lunch.. I dont feel like anyone is taking this issue seriously… it’s just “you have allergies”. Well. I’ve never had alerts except in spring. This never ends even with medication. In 2009 I had to have maxillomandibular extensions. The doctors forgot to put the screws into the upper plates in my sinuses. The upper surgery failed and slipped back. For the next year I had to wear headgear and braces to try and hold the upper jaw and lower sinuses in place. It pretty much fused up but in 2010 I ended up with a terrible infection where the loose metal hardware was near my sinuses. The infection ate away a lot of bone and tissue. The doctor who fixed took 8-9 hours. When done he said… you lost a lot of bone. All we could do was stretch the skin and sow it over the abscess. I’m wondering if the bone was weakened n

I had an incident last weekend where I had a light burning in the back of the throat, followed by drainage and a distinctive metallic taste, a few hours later I was suffering from the worst migraine I have ever had, aches, chills, light sensitivity, seeing a haze around everything, confusion, nausea, a stiff neck and upper shoulders, and most of the symptoms disappeared while laying down. I should have gone to the doctors then, but I was stubborn. After two days all of the symptoms were lessened and today they are completely gone. I think I had a spontaneous leak, but the time I had the symptoms were really short and the drainage seems to have stopped on its own. Yes this makes sense as in December I had the flu so thanks for not making me worry.

My csf is going from my nose to throat how to collect it?? Could it be from mouth
@Dave-9014 жыл бұрын
A simple glucose test on the fluid can tell you if its csf.

We think our son may have a CSF Leak. But our insurance may not cover the cost of treatment. We've been fighting with our hospital for years for certain treatments. In fact, I personally have cancer but learned via searching the online MyCharts. There is something wrong with the medical world when a child is denied appropriate help, and when an adult finds out about cancer via his own searching of his Mycharts! Lower finances of patients should not mean they are ignored, left to suffer, and possibly die! A noble profession (medical professional) has been corrupted by the desire to generate high-profit margins at the expense of poorer patients.

This sounds similar to what happened to me yesterday I was picking up something from the floor and I forgot that my drawer was open and I got up and got hit on my back of the head when I touch my head I still feel some pain and my nose has been leaking that clear substance all day

What about leaks into the ear? I have fluid there for over 10 yrs. Chalked up to be Eustachian tube block. My seizures are directly linked to this issue as I now know I for sure have chiari I checked my own MRI done 10 yrs ago. I LET THEM KNOW THROUGH A MESSAGE AT MY NEUROLOGIST’S OFFICE ASKING WHY IT WAS OVERLOOKED IN 2014 few yrs after I started having seizures. Wasted so many years sick my head pressure was immense my dizziness was immense I couldn’t even predict how fast I’d bring a cup of coffee to my lips I’d have to be extremely careful to not smash the glass mug against my teeth and mouth. I’m happy I got relief and haven’t went back to as worse as I once was. I’d never use and implanted draining systems other ways are possible. Chiari surgery leak patches tethered cord operations. My ear was so full for yrs before my head became worse. Steroids and antibiotics helped I think woke one day with all the pressure gone dizziness gone. I still get no proper answers or investigation into what’s happening. Another MRI next summer maybe I still will be here but losing weight and looking sick so I’m off to my next level at 35 I predict I have less than 10 yrs to go. My chiari is my brain squished into my spinal canal…… Simple overlooked and not given a simple care by any. So why should I give any care? Might just stop using the epilepsy meds and let it all take me. I cannot even get a simple massage fr anyone I’m tense in my neck and jaw all the time.

I've had it since middle of December... every.single.day.all.the.time. I'm thinking I should probably seek medical info on this. No cold, no cough, sneezing, nothing..just running constantly.

I have Lupus and Relapsing polychondritis. Base of my skull burns all the time. Went to 2 dr's. Both said I have a buffalo hump and Lipoma on my neck. I think they should do an MRI. This lump grows and decreases throughout the day. If I put ice on it and lay down it is less painful and starts to get smaller. To sick to fight for help. My family just thinks it's a flare. I increased my prednisone from 5mg to 40mg. It did seem to help stop the lump from moving to the side and front of my neck. Don't know if I should continue to suffer for another month to see if pred works. This started in July 2015 it is now Jan 2016.

I was brutally beaten and gang raped. My fluid started leaking out of my ears (drenched pillow) and nose within the week. That was 5 years ago. I just figured this out yesterday!! ALL my newer medical problems now make sense. This was done by people who are very well versed in the medical community.
