Utoni Nujoma, son of Namibia's late Founding President Sam Nujoma, has paid tribute to his father, highlighting Nujoma's remarkable contributions to Namibia's independence and his lasting legacy.
Speaking to NewsOnOne, Utoni described the former president as a revolutionary leader who fought tirelessly for Namibia's liberation.
"We are celebrating his rich legacy as a man who fought for the independence of Namibia," he said.
He emphasized that Sam Nujoma led the SWAPO movement from the late 1960s until Namibia's independence in 1990.
As one of Nujoma's children, Utoni recalled how they were raised in the spirit of liberation and sent to various countries to pursue education and support the struggle.
"My brothers and I were sent to Russia, Germany, and Cuba during the liberation struggle," he noted.
Utoni credited his father for instilling discipline, hard work, and a strong sense of responsibility in his children.
"He always told us to work hard to ensure that Namibia not only achieved political independence but also economic emancipation," he said.
He highlighted Sam Nujoma’s commitment to improving Namibia's healthcare, education, and workers' rights.
"He was instrumental in establishing workers' unions like the NUNW to fight for workers' rights and ensure better conditions for the people," Utoni added.
As the family mourns their father’s passing, Utoni acknowledged the difficulty of expressing their emotions at this time but promised that the family would share more about Sam Nujoma's life and legacy in the future.
