"are human beings better and happier when they're provided with all they need or when they're forced to struggle against the obstacles to achieve their goals" The middle-ground is not mentioned! Provide human beings with the basics (houses and food) and we'll gladly struggle against all other obstacles!

I would encourage everyone to read the book for themselves. This kind of a short introduction really can't do it justice.

This doesn’t seem accurate. Utopia means ‘no place’ and it was named so intentionally. St Thomas More was writing satire. This makes even more sense that utopian citizen Hythloday means ‘peddler of nonsense’. So in other words, the system Hythloday brags about as the ideal society is non existent because it will never work. That’s the point of the second half of the satire.

Utopia doesn't mean the perfect place. It's meaning is the place "topoi" (place, in Greek) that does not exist "U" (in Greek, privative prefix). Mr Lionel Ramsal
