I could never understand why Utopia wasn't more popular. They had so much going for them...

I called a Santa Barbara FM radio station once here in So.Cal. when POV was released to get Utopia some airplay.I was given some half assed answer like they "didn't play that kinda stuff" or something equally lame.Something tells me in those days the record companies paid for airplay & Warner Bros.Records only tolerated Utopia because they were Todd's pet project.All their subsequent labels folded or just weren't able to promote Utopia properly as well.

Amazing!! Obviously shot by a fan who knew the song and even captured the vocal trade offs. The sound must have been incredible. This is why viagra wasn't invented or needed back then. We had this stuff.

I was there!!! Loved that tour!! I can remember waiting on line all day. You could bring coolers filled with drinks and food. Back when you still could get away with that. sharing food and drink with other fans in line. Being from the NY area, I went to many different shows there. Every summer they had a great line-up of concerts.

I borrowed my uncle's Super 8 sound camera. I don't recall the state of consumer video camcorders in '79 -- pretty shitty I'm sure if they even were in the market then. Thanks for the comments.

THE TUBES were in concert around the same week at the WOLMAN RINK; Todd Rundgren came out on the encore and played BABA O'REILLY with them (The Who song)
@blacksnk4 жыл бұрын
Rundgren and The Tubes had done a lot of collaborations in the years. I had the pleasure a few years ago of having drinks with Rick Anderson and Prairie Prince and they spoke very highly of Rundgren.

I spent the better part of the summer up there...saw Ramones, Todd, Tubes, and many more. Lennonn and Yoko walked through the park and few bothered them. I moved to the city for a few years but nothing took the place of those free and easy afternoons, until I saw Squeeze at the Palladium. Jesus, those were good days!

I was at that show. Skylab fell out of the sky that day. Chaka Khan came out at the end and helped them sing HELLO IT'S ME. Several days later, Todd dropped in on a TUBES show and helped them play BABA O'REILLY. Great show.

Great show, great tune, great band. And great venue! But I bet it was hot as hell, and Todd was in those black spandex pants. One question, though: Wonder who arranged the stage, so that Roger's butt faced the audience all day? hahaha. I caught this tour four days later, at Legend Valley in Ohio. Excellent time to see a concert!

Anyone who was there, remember two guys (17 yr olds) who had a room at the Essex House? My friends grandma splurged for the room, (no grandson of mine,...etc) bc we HAD to sleep over in Central Park? Heavens NO! ;-) So anyway, we used the old barter system, trade you some nice showers +AC for some of that,..what is that??- LOL! That was US! and yes It was a hot July night in NYC!! - Never forget 7-11, then 7-14 at Belmont. I think I bought tickets for B52's for the next nite+I went alone, Who's?

Saw them at Fox Theater in St. Louis on their " Oops, Wrong Planet " tour. Helluva show. Got to chat with Todd & Kasim outside the back stage exit after the show for about 10 minutes before their limo driver told them they had to go or they'd miss their flight out of St. Louis International. Very friendly fella's, they were.

That boombox kills me. The Super 8 camera I used back then is actually lighter than the Canon C300 I use today for motion pictures. Click on the top of my channel -- there are a couple of other songs from this show. Made the mistake of rolling on the "Seven Rays" -- long - ran out of film. "Just One Victory" from the following year. (Oh - I also posted "Just One Victory" from this year's tour. Shot with an iPhone. Now that is a small camera, All in the Utopia playlist.)
