UV-5R | Reset All Settings

I recommend users reset all settings when they power on the UV-5R the first time, even if it's freshly out-of-the-box, bought new. The quality control process at the factory may have changed some of the settings in a way that could cause a problem for the typical operator.
A Reset-All should certainly be performed if the radio is used...who knows how the previous user had things set up?
Finally, if the radio is acting strange or unexpected, reset all settings and start fresh!
Here's the options to follow in order to reset all settings:
Reset all settings
- [MENU] 040, [MENU]
- Voice prompt confirms, "Initialization."
- Scroll up or down to ALL, press [MENU] to confirm
- The display asks, "Source?"
- Scroll up or down to ALL, press [MENU] to confirm
- The display shows, "Wait.."
- The display restarts and the radio has reset all options to factory default settings.
Now, before we go on, let's change the voice prompt to English:
- [MENU] 014, [MENU]
- Scroll up or down to ENG, press [MENU]
- [EXIT]

The best UV5R user manual I have indicates that the frequency range is limited: Frequency Range (MHz) - 65-108 (Rx only) - 136-174 (Rx/Tx) - 400-480 (Rx/Tx) Source: github.com/radiodoc/uv-5r/releases/tag/v1.0 I don't think that frequency range is useful for amateur radio, or am I mistaken? (transition.fcc.gov/Bureaus/OPP/working_papers/oppwp38chart.pdf) Why do you need access to this range?

@@MiltReynolds I've checked it. I've literally called them. Nobody knows how or is willing to tell me how to fix this. It's fine though because I just manually put in the channels now and save them because I got two so I just copied the frequency from the other one

I'm not understandings what you mean by "unlock"...do you mean does it allow the UV-5R to receive and transmit on all frequencies...fire, police, air, military and more? Can you elaborate a bit more on what you're wishing to do?

Hmm...not sure what could be the problem. It works on my UV5R. Be sure to select "ALL". There are two options for reset: "ALL" and "VFO". Selecting "VFO" reset does NOT reset back to default frequencies. Be sure to select "ALL" if you want to reset back to default frequencies.

Most likely a bad keypad. Only alternative is to try another radio, or do without that function.

If it won't unlock, it's probably due to a bad keypad. Only alternatives are to have the keypad repaired or replaced, or get a new radio. Sorry!

If there's a key symbol next to the battery icon, try holding the # key to unlock.

Good question. This short video did not address that. A better how-to is here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/imGphYBsj5l7eK8 To reset the radio settings, use Menu Item #40. Here's the keypress sequence to enter Menu Mode: Switch radio ON MENU, 40, MENU Voice prompt confirms, "Initialization." Once we've opened the RESET setting we can use the up or down arrows to select either "ALL" or "VFO". Selecting ALL will reset all options to the factory default settings, and it will delete any frequencies we've entered or stored in memory. Selecting to RESET VFO will reset all options, but it will NOT delete any frequencies we've entered or stored.
