The historic launch of the world’s first Indigenous law degree, included this free public lecture at UVic by program’s co-creators Val Napoleon and John Borrows-two of Canada’s foremost Indigenous legal experts. In “Indigenous law: Today and tomorrow,” Borrows explored the lessons learned from Salish law drawn from the land (from 34:10) and Napoleon took a storytelling approach to explore the future of Indigenous law (from 1:08:10).
Chancellor Shelagh Rogers, Elder May Sam, Jan O’Brien from Vancity and Pamela Ouart-McNabb from McConnell Foundation (both major donors to the joint degree program in Canadian Common law and Indigenous Legal Orders) also spoke as part of the evening event. Former law dean Jeremy Webber was honoured with a gift.
The Sept. 25, 2018 event at UVic’s Farquhar Auditorium was broadcast live on UVic’s Facebook page.
