I had the distinct honor of sitting next to Therrell C. Smith on a recent flight. I didn't know who she was at the time and was amazed when she told me she was 96 years old. She looks fabulous! She told me about being born and living in DC since 1917 and living in the same house for 84 years. She really lit up when she told me about teaching dance for 65 years. She still teaches! She loves her students and is proud of them all. Some of them went on to quite distinguished and notable careers. The flight was short, about an hour. Our conversation was even shorter only about 20 minutes. (We both were napping at the beginning of the flight.) In that short 20 minutes I fell in love with her delightful spirit, grace and poise. I bow to you Therrell C. Smith, you inspire me!

All i can say is WOW! I had the awesome pleasure of living with her two weekends ago in Nashville, TN for an class reunion celebrating 150th sesquicentennial anniversary of Fisk University. Therell is ALL that and more! Class of 1939! having known WEBDubois, a Fisk alumni, Charles S. Johnson, president of Fisk in the late 40s, John Hope Franklin...to name a few. Everywhere she went, she was surrounded by astounded onlookers. She is an elegant, graceful and very well preserved nonogenarian! I tried to escort her to her sorority activity that Saturday and she broke loose from my arm and was over 25 feet ahead of me.I walked too slow! lol...... what a small world! through conversation, we learned she taught my bff, Michele Nash Lewis and also another junior high school alumnus, Virginia Johnson, the prima dona of Harlem, former Alvin Ailey dancer/instructor. Therell, God blessed me to meet you! I love you!
