This video shows how to adjust the hook timing on a Consew 225 industrial sewing machine. The timing procedure also applies to other machines in the same class, like Singer 111W155, Juki 562, etc.

Hello from Australia my name is Steve. I am the proud owner of a singer 211a566aa. It has been serving me well until recently when my hook timing fell out from heavy use and a loose screw on the hook timing gear. after watching your video I was able to put my machine back into correct timing and now it sews like a dream as it did when I first purchased the machine. This machine has had very little use over the past 20 years by the previous owner. It now is being used every day and keeps up with its reputation of being a tough machine for medium to heavy work thank you very much for your video as the consew machine is quite similar and it was easy for me to follow your very clear steps. Thank you very much from Steve cheers and have a great day.

Wow,brilliant What you show is very clear and precise footage` its the best iv ever seen on you tube by far, and I have watched at least 1500 video in the past year, everything to do with sewing machines, I really appreciate the detail of these video`s , especially the different split screen positions on the workings of a particular piece in one seen on the screen.that divides you from the rest out there,very clever. Its very clear and illustrate showing exactly whats going on, Never have I seen some one else go to this much effort to explain by film without speech, Demonstrating great information on the correct distance needle to shuttle and other etc, Please continue making video`s I can`t imagine the time its taken to produce these, but believe me its been worth the effort, You educate thousands of people that will really appreciate your efforts putting these out there, Any one that watch your films will have the confidence to adjust what is appropriate to get the settings correctly no problem, Music ain`t bad either very relaxing, Thank you

Hi Uwe, thanks you for your videos. I have a Consew 226 walking foot machine and I'm definitely a beginner. I restore old cars so mainly working with vynal and leather. I bought my machine second hand supposedly fully serviced and just about everything was wrong including the drive belt not aligned to the timing marks. So I set everything up to your instructions and the machine is working much better. Us beginners could do with a video on needle and thread selection for different materials if that is part of your expertise in the area. But thank you for helping work through the problems I was having. Cheers, Larry

This is an exceptionally well done video. Sharp and clear images, excellent instructions. If only more of KZbin was this well done! One question: To my eye the hook is sweeping past the scarf very close to the bottom of the scarf. Other machines spec this nearer the center or even top of the scarf. Is there any explanation on why the Consew is calibrated this way?

Uwe...absolutely the best professional video for resetting the timing on this type rotary hook...I have made videos on re-timing Singer Class 95 and 96 rotary hook machines, but I needed the help of your video to re-time a Consew 226-R. The best help tip for me was that the needle had to start to rise again from its lowest point 3/32" just as the hook came into the hook 1/16" above the needle's eye. I was able to eyeball all of that after loosening the "big gear" screws and manually moving the hook point to the correct spot. After that, the machine was sewing perfectly again! Thanks again!!!

very nice vid. I achieved the hook timing by loosening the 2 set screws on the smaller driven gear instead - also, when you set the needle height, where in relation to the machine is that done?
@UweXY
@UweXY 3 жыл бұрын
One of the set screws on the small gear also sits inside a groove to prevent the gear from rotating/slipping on the hook shaft. If you rotate the small gear and move the set screw out of the groove, then hook timing is very likely to slip as soon as the going gets tough. The needle (bar) height is set in relation to the tip of the hook.

Thank you for posting such a helpful and concise video. I used this procedure when I regauged my consew 333 double needle but have run into problems. My first attempt was almost perfect but the right needle would occasionally tear the thread, especially going through a thick seam. So I went back through the process step by step but now cannot get the two hooks to synchronize via the gears. I can get the right hook lined up via 7 o’clock position but not the left side. The machine won’t sew at all, totally stuck on how to repair. Do you have any suggestions on how to easily synchronize the gears on both side? Thanks again for such a helpful video
@UweXY
@UweXY 4 жыл бұрын
Matthew Corcoran I’m not really familiar with the Consew 333, but in general with two-needle machines you must be able to adjust hook timing and distance for each hook independently of the other. When I adjust two needle machines, I just work on one hook first, get it timed right and tighten down that adjustment. Then I work on the other hook. Don’t try to do both at the same time, I guess.

Uwe, Do you field questions? I posted a video [Consew 224 worn out bobbin case?] My Consew 224 appears to have a worn out bobbin case. The small gear that drives it has a little free play in it. As I rotate the wheel by hand I hear a sound that doesn't seem like it should be there, you may be able to hear it on the video. The noise may have something to do with the stitch adjusting mechanism or the connecting rod. I got this machine free with the purchase of another machine because this doesn't work.

After I straightened the needle plate, and got the hook close, it is too tight and sits on bobbin case. Then the reverse hits the needle protector in reverse. Timing everywhere is off. Hi Uwe, thanks for your excellent tutorial, I use Juki DNU-1508, but because of the nature of the horizontal hook mechanism, in reverse stitch direction, the needle bar move toward the operator side make more gap between the scarf & the point of the hook. For very thick material around 5/16", I must make the point of the hook nearly nearly touch the scarf in reverse direction ( 0 mm ), while in the forward direction the needle guard actually hit the needle & move the needle away from the point of the hook. It seems like not a good setting but it works, the stitch doesn't skip. Following the procedure on the manual doesn't work for very thick material. Anyway I like vertical hook mechanism like in DNU 1541 because the scarf to point of the hook distance doesn't change in reverse/forward direction. Any suggestions to fix this awkward timing procedure ?
@UweXY
@UweXY 8 жыл бұрын
The distance from hook to needle shouldn't really change when switching to reverse. Something else must be going on, be loose or worn. Your needle bar rocker frame should not have any sideways play. If you can wiggle the rocker bar sideways with your fingers, it's too loose. You may need to adjust the rocker base guide plate (item 16 on page 5 of the parts manual). The needle guard slightly touching the needle is not really a bad thing, in fact it's the practice recommended by an exoperience sewing tech - I show it in this video : kzbin.info/www/bejne/b3a6gHeCi9GCrtE Also, just a minor point: most people use hook AXIS direction when describing vertical vs. horizontal hook designs - e.g. vertical axis hook (1508), or horizontal axis hook (1541). Being specific avoids confusion.

I especially prize this find because I found a pristine 225r a couple years ago that I have been teaching myself to sew. I always wanted to check the timing to see if it's spot on. I assuming it's ok but I'm one of those guys thats wants to know for sure. The one thing that I didn't understand was near the end you made mention of bending the needle guard if needed. Where is that ? and whats the purpose ?

superb tutorial..something about the combination of your written instructions, the video footage of the machine mechanics and your chosen accompanying music..so uplifting (and empowering)..thanks mr Uwe. One question..in the beginning, you show engaging the safety clutch. Does anything need to be done regarding the safety clutch after the timing process is completed? and by the way.. makes my smile hearing you quietly chuckling when that binder clips "got away" from the needle bar.
@chrismiller2341

The safety clutch only disengages after there's an incident (thread jam?) strong enough to trigger it. After that happens, the belt sprocket will just spin freely on the bottom shaft, so if you turn the handwheel, not much will happen on the bottom side (the feed dogs will move forward/backward, but not up/down, and the hook won't turn). I'm not sure why he included that in a hook timing video, but it's good info I guess?

Great video very enlightening. Mine is a Brother LS2-B837. Would this be suitable for that machine too?

The hook timing concepts are the same, but Brother uses different measurements. Check www.brother-usa.com/support/ModelInfo.aspx?R3ModelID=B837 for details.

I have a Consew 220 and am trying to find feet , bobbins and stuff for it. I can not find anywhere that lists the 220. Are these parts interchangeable with other models of Consew machines ? Thanks

thanks for the awesome videos. they all have been a great help to me, especially this video. I have a question, I have a singer 111g156 that I bought at a real good price. I managed to bring it back to life with the help of several of your videos. I changed the timing belt, timed the hook and needle, adjusted the feed dogs, changed the take-up lever (because it was broken) & added a servo motor. THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU. Everything works now & it sews fine. the only trouble I'm having is my (SPI) stitch per inch. I have it at to the biggest stitch which is 5 SPI. when I sew a single piece of auto upolstery material or even a piece of paper I get 6 SPI. When double that to 2 layers I get 7 SPI & when I double that to 4 layers I get 8 SPI. Any idea on how I can fix this. I've looked through the manual and online and can't find anything on this. Thank you very much

It may have to do with the forward/reverse stitch length balance. Your machine should produce 5spi forward and backward if it is adjusted properly. If the reverse balance ifs off, one direction will be longer, the other shorter. Page 23 of the manual (parts.singerco.com/IPinstManuals/111W156.pdf) describes how to balance the reverse mechanism. Other things can also cause shortened stitch length, like if the needle penetrates the material AFTER it starts moving towards the back, or exits before it's done moving. Ideally the inner feed dog and the needle arrive at the material at exactly the same time. This varies with the thickness of the material - so single adjustment will be perfect for all thicknesses. These machines were designed to do a single task in a factory and often need to be adjusted if that task changes. Craft users often do many very different tasks and run into trouble because the machines aren't designed to be set-it-once-and-forget-it type machines. I've not worked on that particular reverse mechanism, so I can only guess at some of this.

That should say ".. NO single adjustment will be perfect for ..."

Thank you Uwe, great instructional video - the old b&w manual is so hard to read compared to this. Quick question though: On my machine none of the 2 screws is sitting in the groove of the big gear. The closest one is about a 1/4 turn away. Would it be advisable to loosen both and make that rotational correction before proceeding with the other steps or am I being anal?

One of the set screws should definitely be in the groove, otherwise the gear likely to slip on the shaft. Usually one set screw a domed tip, the other is flat. The domed-tip set screw is the one that goes into the groove. Tighten the screw in the groove first, then the other..

Does this work with a twin needle machine? My right needle sometimes skips stitches but my left is good. I think the timing is slightly off on the right but am having trouble timing it. Consew 2339

I realize this is old, and one of the best I have ran across but. Is the dimension for needle bar rise suppose to be 3/16" or 3/32"? Every manual I have ran across says 3/16" and it sure looks like more than 3/32 " in video?
@UweXY

I know of five manuals that describe hook timing for this class of machine. Three of the manuals use 3/32” needle rise from BDC for hook timing (Consew 225, Army manual for 111W155, Juki LU-562 manual.) The Singer 111W155 manual states no number but uses reference lines on the needle bar instead. The fifth manual is written by Keystone Sewing for Navy training - it unfortunately gets that key measurement wrong as they write out the number in words. Details: leatherworker.net/forum/topic/65715-consew-225-new-hook-issue/ I initially used the Keystone manual until I realized it was wrong. It’s possible some of the macro footage shows the needle moving a little more than it really should, but the captions and graphic text overlays are accurate.

@@UweXY A quick follow up. I've had my 111w155 for over 10 years and have always followed the manuals that I had and as you have pointed out they are incorrect. Also my needle bar does have a mark engraved on it at 3/16"....wrong. So today I set about readjusting and readjusting. Set everything as it should be test ran rechecked and it was off? The problem was after loosing the 2 screws on the gear and tapping it to move it, the gear wasn't really moving on the shaft but the entire shaft and the bushing (closest to the clutch ) was moving (the bushing lock screw was loose). after running it would move back. Finally got gear loosened up on shaft, and bushing tightened down, readjusted. Sews better than it ever has. Thanks again. Now for a new motor.
