I completely agree but then there's also SEO-friendly copywriting so when I work with clients I try to find a balance and maybe reprioritize text to cover the essential keywords while still giving character in headline - just something that came to mind whenever hearing criticism towards some of the "feature" oriented words, there's a place for all this just maybe somewhere else ;)

As someone who has hired designers from a number of specialisms / disciplines. I would say his message is on point. Think of it like this. Your pholio and personality will get you the job. Your features will get you the interview. But the Copywriting benifits will get whoever is reading to read MORE and keeps them engaged, not throwing you into the "No" pile straight away. Your goal is for them to WANT to read as much about you as possible. That formula will work for what ever you are "selling"
@MrConway007
@MrConway007 4 жыл бұрын
The thing is though Gary, when the goal is to look for a full time job as a UI/UX Designer, would you agree that saying you are a UI/UX Designer in your hero copy headline or subheading then becomes the a benefit that you want to highlight because that is what hiring managers would be lookng for?
@DesignCourse
@DesignCourse 4 жыл бұрын
It should go in the subheadline imo. It should be prominent, but secondary.
@oplawlz
@oplawlz 4 жыл бұрын
It's all about selling yourself. There are 1001 UX/UI designers out there, but companies are hiring to solve some problem they have. By presenting yourself as a solution to that problem rather than a generic tool that *might* get the job done you make yourself look much more appealing.

My English is not the best, but I'd choose something like "Your developer team will benefit from my experience, social skills and high-level knowledge" or "Do you want to complete your web dev team?"

@@DesignCourse So if the goal was to look for a UI/UX job but you only mentioned that in the smaller sub hero copy what would be big headline copy?
@MrConway007
@MrConway007 4 жыл бұрын
@@oplawlz I get what you are saying but when you are applying to various UI/UX roles creating multiple instances of a portfolio website, where the only change is in the headline copy is not very efficient. At some point you will have to settle on a headline that is somewhat generic somewhat applicable to most UI/UX roles, no hiring manager is gonna expect you to directly speak to them and thier particular business problems

As someone who started learning to Copywrite, I sense hell lot of wrong in the personal portfolios. Forget about hiring them, the bad copy makes you close the tab after reading the headline. Imagine, if you want someone who design and build a website for you. You want someone who does that. You got nothing reading their names. You want to know what problems they can solve, not who!.

Idk about this video, it was super judgemental but not in a good way. 100 bad ways and 1 good way for UX design specifically with portfolios. Your name should be the first thing someone sees when they visit your "portfolio" website, the client or potential employer may not care about your name but you want them to you need them to. It is a positive identifier, no one is shifting through hundreds of thousands of portfolio's, they're most likely getting referred through some other kind of service. And guess what when that potential client thinks "Hey that John Adams made an ok website and he does frontend and backend let me google John Adams Frontend Developer and pull up his website again" just like a business target.com bam their name and/or logo front and center and most all other business you need for them to know your name first
@DesignCourse
@DesignCourse 4 жыл бұрын
I never said hundreds of thousands. And I never said don't show your name. It just should not be the primary headline. You can utilize that headline to make a much bigger impact while still ensuring your name is easily recognizable either in the subheadline or elsewhere.
