Thanks for the video!! I powered up the UXG Lite and connected the lan port to the my network. Plugged the UXG and connected . I saw that the UXG was recognized . Then I removed the USG with the app, plugged the wan connection into the UXG and then adopted the UXG with via the UniFi app. Easy peasy!! I immediately notice that my web pages opened faster. I ask my wife who did not know what I was doing and she said that she noticed that the web pages loaded much faster. Way to go Ubiquiti!!!

Thank you for this review from Montreal! You're the first I've seen that's provided data on routing performance with IDS/IPS and Smart Queues. This is all anybody really needs to know. If it works for your application, great, if not, move on. We have deployed literally hundreds of ER-X because of the high performance in a small package (compared to original USG). This comes in at double the price, but at least stays within the UniFi ecosystem. Decisions decisions!
@JacksonCampbell
@JacksonCampbell 8 ай бұрын
I just found out the ER-X only does 500mbps because of something with the chip or something on the ER-X and ER-X-SFP. I was disappointed, because I had thought they were gigabit. There's not a different EdgeRouter in that price range or size, otherwise I would be using a different device to ensure gigabit availability.
@cmoullasnet

@@JacksonCampbell They can route at gigabit speeds. Google “er-x hardware offload”. You just need to run a couple of commands and it will work at line speed just fine. You can’t do that with software features like smart queues or DPI though.

@@JacksonCampbell ER-X can do simultaneous gigabit, and UXG-Light can't. As usual, Ubiquiti will not have regular releases for entry line products as well, which is comparable with edgerouter support. Honestly, both of them is a waste of money in 2023.
@JacksonCampbell
@JacksonCampbell 8 ай бұрын
@@yuriykorenyak2351 You're wrong about all of that. ER-X is limited to 500mbps because of a limitation of the link to the switch or something. UXG Lite definitely does gigabit. WOW, perfect video, Im giving my UDM to my friend since I have an AC-AP-PRO which is going to a U7 Pro, plus I have all unifi network switch's but im changing my server area one from a 5 port mini to a 16 Port POE. I am also running Unifi on my PI4 in a docker so im good on that front. So the UXG LIte would be a perfect fit for my setup. The UDM will go to a person who will fully use the power it has. Im also buying the a POE+ splitter to power the Lite on one of the 8 POE+ ports.

Would it be wise to move from my Edgerouter 4 to a UXG, I'd rather have a UDM SE, but I am working out of a 10 inch rack intentionally (Kinda like the SFF build of the networking world). I have a couple of VPNS to a couple of cloud providers, 10 VLANS, tons of firewall rules and a concurrent 1gb internet connection. I did see there was anew beta build for the ER-4 with a complete redesign of the UI making me wonder if the project is still alive again or if they are just worried about a reskin instead of potentially adding more features.

I really feel they should have had an integrated controller with this thing. It can't have been that much more expensive and could have benefitted a lot of use cases. As is I would honestly recommend the Unifi Dream Router for most configurations even if you don't need the integrated wifi. In addition to the integrated AP it has more ports, integrated storage, and expandable storage meaning you could really start getting into other unifi applications like unifi protect.

I think the biggest complaint for me is the gigabit ports. I think the ports should’ve been 2.5, at least. We need to start ditching gigabit because multi-gigabit is the future. No affordable products(under $200?) have 2.5 for WAN and LAN yet. I recently got fiber for the first time and my ISP has a router with a 2.5 WAN port, but the LAN port is 1gb so I think that’s a waste too. The industry is moving so slow for household multi-gigabit.

Anyone knows if it's possible to disable the NAT between WAN and LAN Port? Since i need to have NAT been done on the device infant of the WAN port and set a fixed route. This is how I do it on my USG. But the USG hat console access, so it was passible to manually change firewall rules. AFAIK you do not have a console access on the UXG...

Seems like a catch22 on installation if you use a lan based unify server. On setup it wants me to switch the wan connection to the uxg-lite (as you showed) then for console it says offline as we obviously unplugged the original dhcp server, and it’s not yet assigning IPs for the lan. Do I need to have it as a different subnet and then somehow allow it to see the original network just to get it adopted? Seems like if they had it default as a dhcp server this wouldn’t be an issue. Any tips?

I got one as well. And overall it is really great. However, being based on the new Unifi OS this gateway does not support deploying customer configuration to it using the gateway.json file. This is pretty annoying as i need this to use the USG as an internet modem for my fiber connection. ( which requires settings like having IPv4 over VLAN 6 but IPv6 using VLAN 0. ( And TV also has its own VLAN. But the USG itself has no interface for this. So now with the new UXG Mini it is no longer possible to use all the features of my internet connection at the same time.

Good to see the claimed performance improvements to be real! I have my UXG Lite lying here ready to be installed. Still waiting for the Home Assistant Unifi addon to be bumped up to 8.0.7. However I see quite some issues with the lite on the Ubiquiti forum. Loopback/hairpin not working, SSH stability issues, adopt loops of all network elements after adopting the UXG lite, etc. So I'll wait a bit till we have more stable firmware & controller software. Additionally I still can't fully figure out how to exactly adopt the new gateway when the controller is on a different than default subnet without loosing all my settings.

Great video! So my BIGGEST concern about swapping out my aging USG-3P for this UXG-Lite is if I would lose any settings or have to do any configuring. After all it's been about 7 years since I put the USG-3P into service and I can't remember what I did. So from your video, it appears that the only thing you need to do is unplug the USG-3P and power up the UXG-Lite and swap the LAN and WAN cables, and make sure you remove the USG-3P from your network before you adopt the UXG-Lite, and that's it???????? You sure there isn't anything else that needs to be done to ensure everything stays the was it was with the USG-3P???? If not, that's relieved a lot a concern I've been having about getting one.

Yes, there is a reason, if you have 500 or less gbit inet without Protect and you don't know much about networking, UXG-Light is for you. Otherwise get ER-x for a half of the price and it will do the same due to similar hardware.

@@yuriykorenyak2351 lol the only reason I’m thinking of ubiq is because I’m tired of pfsense bs, and I definitely need the Protect. I just don’t see any value in the uxg lite compared to the udm pro

If you keep the same controller instance and adopt it should keep the port forwarding settings if I recall.

The self hosted controller statement baffles a lot of noobs I think, myself included. Does the controller need to be running 24/7 for the equipment to work? Or can I just run the controller on my laptop to get the equipment up and running and for when I need to make modifications and then shut it down? And all my equipment will still work? What is the point or need of running the controller 24/7?
@ananamusly
@ananamusly 9 ай бұрын
No it doesn't need to run 24/7. It's just for monitoring, really. I've had one setup on my laptop. Worked fine. Nowadays I bought a mini pc from Amazon and put the controller on that and let it run 24/7. It's just good to have something you can remotely access if you are away and check on things.

The controller only needs to be running when you want to adjust settings, use the wifi captive portal, or if you want to gather traffic statistics. Ran it for four years on my laptop before finally moving it to a Raspberry Pi 3 a year ago.

The value of this new router isn't as good as a Dream Router with its built-in controller, AP, and switch. If you are running your own Unifi server in the cloud for a lot of devices, it could be useful, but it seems like they could cut $30 off, and it makes more sense.

We used to see QoS capablities on Ubiquti routers like EdgeRouterX around 100mbps, EdgerRouter4 around 200mpbps, What can we expect on pure QoS on the UXG Lite? more than 200mpbs?

Well there really isn’t QoS on these devices it’s more of wifi limiting . Hope to see traditional QOS implement in an update

No PoE, only 1 Gbps. In addition the current software is broken beyond believe. Create a VLAN, create a SSID. It should be a guest / isolated network. But turning this option on, that worked in the old USG well, will make your clients on that SSID not get any DHCP addresses and not get internet. Only workaround currently is to make the network not a 'guest' network. Which means it will be able to talk to all other devices. The hole guest / corporate network shizzle makes the actual configuration of that brick even hard for network experts because ubnt tries to hide complexity behind proprietary gimmicks that make the actual effective configuration as un-transparent as it gets. And then they don't even work the way they should on release day because the customer is their alpha tester... Ubnt is only successful because the other network vendors for their customer scope are even worse (hard to believe...)

No sfp port in 2023 - such a shame. No bidirectional gigabit - not possible simultaneous upload/download gigabit throughput. Virtually any consumer router with ddwrt will do a better job than this small piece of obsolete (and overpriced at the same time) hardware. My statement is valid if you have a home lab. For corporate environment, you need to really save on your IT if you decide to buy this small piece of junk. We voted for modern router in compact form factor and got as a result 10 years old piece of hardware even not capable of a full gigabit. On my side, I want to get rid of my old ER-4 which becomes a bottleneck and trouble issuer in my home lab (no updates, no fixes for issues). But, as I found, UXG-Light is actually a competition for ER-x - and it is not really an improvement for me. And here I am speaking about home lab. Corporate - big NO! You can get a way better piece of hardware with more capable software for 129$ USD.
