This man had balls of steel. Literally. He was the one of the only people to say "no" to Stalin and get away with it, he also once told Stalin "Stop sending people to kill me, we've already captured a few of them, if you don't stop sending assassin's I'll send one to Moscow and I won't have to send another." Long live Tito and may the Balkans unite again.

I know little of this man, but just looking at him, his reputation is well-deserved. He has the look of a man who singlehandedly kept many small groups of people all at each others necks united through willpower alone, and his country following his death proved that. He was the Frederick Barbarossa, or the Genghis Khan of his time. Maybe not entirely clean men with a spotless record, and perhaps even deplorable in many respects, but their ability to lead a collective group of nations and cultures towards greatness and victory through just their own ambition and drive is nothing but respectable. 🫡 Marshall Tito, I hardly knew you.

Tito was a true hero of the workers, unlike pretty much every other nominally Communist or Socialist leader in history. He truly believed in Socialism and the liberation of the workers, sad that ethnic conflict had to destroy the SFR, otherwise, it probably would have been a very successful Socialist state to this day. Odd no one ever mentions it in debates over the merits of leftism in general.

Exactly, Im half Serbian and half Czech, so I also like him for condemning Soviet Union after its invasion of 1968. Because Tito believed that Czech people have the right to build their own socialism without being slaves to Moscow. Czechs called it "socialism with human face", because they wanted socialism without repression. I think if Tito was alive now, he would condemn Russian attack against Ukraine as well.

Likely your perception of other socialist states is colored by cold war propaganda too. Socialist thinkers have always said that every country will develop and build socialism differently. And Yugoslavia was definitely very unique but then so is every other country.

@@zviyeri9117 oh totally. It was smart to use those loans and the people of Yugoslavia benefitted from it, but I draw that line at people implying it was some kind of perfect genius communist system. As with most things claiming to be socialist or communist, it wasn't really, but unlike China or the USSR it also wasn't just reinventing class divide then murdering one of the classes they invented. It was a very nuanced system that feels like it prioritized doing whatever it could to remain free of state capitalist/authoritarian communist influence, as well as western capitalist influence. That meant a lot of objectively not communist concessions, but also a lot of policies aimed first and foremost at providing people with basic needs so the more capitalistic elements of the system didn't grind them down. Its very interesting to read about. One of those contradictory societies that really seems like it shouldn't have worked but was also such a massive improvement to what people were used to, and willing to adapt to the times, that it became unifying and popular.
