Emily Van Egmond. Brilliant, skillful, highly experienced, and actually can shoot very well on her day. But the reasons she shouldn't be played as a 9 are shown quite well in this game as in other games Tony has tried it - even with the forward rotations. And it's not her shooting nearly so much as lacking the other key attributes of a striker: speed, hold-up play & creating pressure on the opposing backs to bamboozle them, and pull them out of position. All of these things we know Sam Kerr is brilliant at & Heyman looked even better than she used to 10 years ago. Emily is a superb midfielder, an excellent 10 perhaps, but not a 9. Stop it Tony.

So who do you think should take the criticism for that, Van Egmond. Really. You might want to have a look at Gustavsson. Van Egmond is an excellent midfielder. Not a natural goal scorer. Hayman is though and in great form. Gustavsson brings her into the squad for that reason and sits her on the bench for the best part of 80 minutes. Got to say, gees it was a relief not to hear Kerrs name mentioned every 2 minutes!! So tired of the hype that surrounds her.

As great of a player Mary fowler is, her unselfishness is a hindrance Her talent alone to demands more of the ball and a killer instinct for goal. Australia is so lucky in that she can attack and set up teammates at such a high level. And chooses the latter more often than not.

She's still young but developing very nicely. Her historical weakness has been just lacking a bit of intensity & physicality off the ball. But one can see her time at Man City & competing for minutes there has improved this a lot already...

I don't think her unselfishness is a hindrance. If she takes more on by herself it does come at a cost. The team lose trust and are more reliant on her. She will be more burnt and lose her quality through the game. By building the team as a whole steadily, is the way the matildas will win more often and grow

Maybe you need to look at the Matildas' performances for more than just the past few months. Emily has done well for Australia for many years. The best strikers miss what seem to be easy chances and Emily was not playing in her preferred position. So, get real.

Hi John, if she got one of those two easy ones, especially the second one (like 3’ away right in front of the frame), I’m sure nobody would say anything negatively but praise! You see other comments as well, maybe I’m a little more harsh. They say bitter pills cure the ill! I don’t know whether or not the team cares about what fans voicing their opinion, but I hope they do so they might do better next time. It’s the privilege to be called to play. @@JulieCoanus Yes, agree, but not a system with Van Egmond as 9. Tony's been overcomplicating the solution to Sam being injured. Playing Van Egmond as 9 and rotating the forwards all over the place has been disfunctional & messy. As far as I can tell it's achieved nothing and hurt performances when he's tried it. He should just be playing an actual striker, like Heyman or Siemsen etc.

Mary fowler was the only forward looking dangerous and willing to take on the defense and make them feel pressured. Van Egmond looked slow and flat, same with Raso... Both should have been interchanged earlier. Torpey needs to pull the trigger. Heyman presented a new dynamic and energy... thank the Gods. The passing was sloppy and lacked connection and most forward thrusts were safe and predictable. Overall they looked like a bunch of players who haven't played together for a long time and had an average game with little or no impact for most of the time... clearly against a weaker and mainly defensive opponent. A lot of work to do.

Too much emphasis and whining about Kerr not playing. The Matildas played good football before she was part of the set-up, she won't be there for the next twelve months and in a few years' time, she won't be there at all. So, deal with reality.

tony g did the right thing by not starting foord. she’s been playing every game almost every minute in the wsl & she’s been very overworked. that’s who tony was referring to when he said; “players coming in overloaded, fatigued and with injury niggles”. caitlin deserved the rest and she played brilliant even coming on as a sub. i’m glad tony g isn’t putting success over her physical health since her hammy is a concern atm.

@@luvnwoo This stuff about Foordy being "fatigued" & overloaded is a very popular narrative but also just complete & utter BS. FACT 1: she's played *most* of just 7 Arsenal games over two months since having a whole month off over Christmas. FACT 2: she's a professional football player and Arsenal's schedule isn't nearly as bad as many other teams still in the UWCL, FA Cup etc. Yes she's been playing most of the minutes in nearly all of Arsenal's domestic games recently. But her actual playing minutes vs elapsed time is very unremarkable relative to FIFA maximum player load guidelines. FACT 3: She didn't play most of Arsenal's last game! FACT 4: Arsenal is now out of all competitions apart from WSL & Conti Cup, so she's actually going to have a lack of minutes coming up anyway!

@@bd9531 the tillies coach himself talked abt players coming in overloaded with minutes & being fatigued with injury niggles. i was simply paraphrasing tony. 🤷‍♀️ those ARE the words he used. and considering foord had her hamstring strapped up the last week before international break & is probably the tilly with the most minutes played in their respective leagues (emphasis on probably and if she isn’t, she surely is one of the most played tillies), it’s not hard to assume she was one of the players he was referring to. and you do realise the ONLY reason she didn’t start that last game (one of two games she hasn’t started in this season) was because she got a leg niggle and was subbed off for precautionary reasons against lcl. i was pleased to see her rested in the first half against uzbekistan & without her hammy so strapped up. and yes, you’re right, she IS a professional but that doesn’t exempt her from growing tired just because she is one. her energy during games have been below her norm and it’s been very clear to see. though i will say that her restricted positioning at arsenal compared to her free-er style of play with the matildas does contribute to that. also might i quickly add; stats ≠ anything players health wise. for example, lotte wubben-moy has played more minutes than foord and seems to be perfectly fine. but foord seems lacklustre, doubtful & prone to more mistakes than usual (her stuffing up her dribbles for example) despite playing about 100 less minutes than lotte. so realistically, stats don’t mean anything. it all depends on the player themselves. this is just my viewpoint though. i see the fatigue, you don’t. fair enough. 👍🏻🤍 (edit: this is insanely long omg, sorry 😭)
