What do I think? I think your research is wanting or you watched that other wrongheaded video.

Apparently Hanna Reitsch test piloted it; featured in a British post-war colour film. Supposedly a few were used on the Eastern Front "Leonidas" and targeted bridges. Records of course scarce and unreliable in Spring 1945.

Oh God not Again ! I just got finished shooting this wrong headed assumption down a week or two ago. This version was used by the German scientists to Iron out the flawed onboard automatic control system since it kept crashing. The German scientists needed a test pilot to figure the problem out. More then a few test pilots were killed doing this till Hana Reich, the famous German test pilot volunteered. In the very accurate Hollywood movie, OPERATION CROSSBOW, it shows exactly what happened. Hana nearly died doing this. Excerpts of the movie are right here on KZbin ! Just one more thing, German pilots were totally against killing themselves purposely like the Japanese and so were their commanders. It's a ridiculous notion in fact as is using this test bed v1 as some kind of proof.

I think Antony Beevor’s book “Downfall” mentions a squadron of FW190 pilots trained to take out bridges on the Oder river by suicide attack.

Sounds a bit like the okca or cherry blossom the Japanese built during ww2

I was just about to mention the same thing. But better late than never, I suppose!!

The people here seem to have copied another poorly researched video of exactly what this was. It was a testing vehicle to iron out the v1's faulty autopilot nothing more. Go watch OPERATION CROSSBOW right here on KZbin and see for yourself. In point of fact the Germans had many successful remote control flying bombs unlike the Japanese. They were totally against sacrificing trained pilots. The two cultures are very different. Want to know another culture in WW2 that had no such qualms? Russia ! In fact they specifically rammed their aircraft into all kinds of things. It was a known tactic ! They were suppose to try to bail out but it was very acceptable if this didn't happen. Stalin didn't mind one bit. 😄

@brealistic3542 I did know about the X-10 I think it was called, a remote controlled anti-shipping . . Was it a missile or just a bomb? I'm not sure now if it had any independent propulsion or not. I mean, it must have had something to say, get it moving left or right. To correct its flight path, I think it had a kind of stunted, under sized wing, but I'm just guessing now. Well I know these things for sure, that it was an anti-shipping bomb, guided by remote control from a radio link, with the operator having to direct the pilot who had to keep the plane over the desending bomb at all times, so as to keep in radio contact with it at all times, and also to keep it on target. That's what I can say I definitely remember from what I've read. I think it also may have had some limited rocket engines and some shortened wings, but about these two things, I'm less sure.

The piloted version of the V2 was later renamed the SATURN V………

That’s true. The first rockets were just missiles with room added for a person. You’d have to be crazy brave to fly in it.

I remember reading about this in a discussion of the philosophical differences between the Germans and the Japanese, with the former being opposed to the suicide pilot idea.

"Operation Crossbow" (1965) was a fictionalized movie that covered this weapon.

I can't say I remember hearing about the piloted V-1. I have heard of the Japanese manned flying bomb, code-named "Baka" by the Allies. It was dropped from a bomber and flown kamikaze-style into the target. The Japanese word "Baka" can translate into "idiot" or "fool" (among others).

Why don't you do a video on the American rocket powered ramming aircraft designed to ram into enemy aircraft? That would be interesting.

have seen plans for this aircraft on one of the rc airplane sites.

I had heard about this when in high school. I was aware that a female test pilot was the one to survive the test program. I knew that they had decided against using the pilot version ,but I thought they were trying to build a cheap single use interceptor.
