umm how am I supposed to calculate the center-center distance using the formula C = A + sqrt (A^2 - B) when A itself needs the nominal pitch length, L. and nominal pitch length per se needs the center-center distance? so in other words, there is no way to find both the unknowns C & L when neither one is given in the problem. can u help?

It is preferable to go with the diameter given in the question and not in the data book. Data book has standardized and the maximum values it can withstand. You question would be solved with the values given in the question itself.

If the small diameter is not given, try to solve the question by plugging in the value of Pulley pitch diameter from the table on pg 7.58 right after you select the type of belt.

fb is the corresponding value if u look on PSG data book on Page 7.62 for 'i=2.29 and over' category. In this sum, i=3.96 which is greater than 2.29.... so fb=1.14 and not 1.4

If the center distance is not given, then jump onto page number 7.61 and select the value of C with the help of "i" and "D" from the table "Selection of center distance, C" I hope that this cleared your doubt. Best wishes for your exam!
