hello from Cape Cod! Dad and I are doing our usual music night and deeply enjoyed the playful nature. Bartok's work is growing on me, and Dad adores them! =) cheers!

Bonsoir. C' est une très belle prestation de ces danses de Bartok par un quintette à vents avec une très grande recherche de couleurs instrumentales Bravo

The color of English horn fits the first dance very well.

Indeed. Also the alto flute works very well, imitating a Romanian traditional instrument called "caval"

thank you so much. Actually it's a very cheap plastic Yamaha sopranino recorder. I have a variety of whistles but in this recording, this is what I use

Pleasant to listen to and great playing but very far away, in terms of character and tempo, from Bartók's metronome indications and the source (folk dance music) material. Unfortunately loses the dance character of some of the pieces most notably the Pe Loc and transforms the work into Bartók's "Romanian melodies" instead of "Romanian Dances".
@VColorisQuintet3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your suggestions. If somebody wants to play the original tunes, then they should be called Romanian tunes arranged for quintet. We are playing Bartok's Romanian dances and it's only normal to be seen through his compositional vision.

@@VColorisQuintet Sorry, but his compositional vision retained the dance tempos of the original sources. This is why the composition is name Romanian DANCES. He specified this very clearly in the score. For example, in giving the Pe Loc he gave a metronome marking of q=108 and a duration of 45 seconds which is in line with the pace of the field recording on which it is based and the dance itself that goes with it. Your version is very pleasant to listen to, and you are certainly entitled to your own individual interpretation, but is no longer a dance tempo suitable for a Pe Loc from Torontál as Bartók intended it to be. .
@VColorisQuintet Жыл бұрын
great explanation, but this is an arrangement we did ourselves, so it's our own decision about tempo. Not to mention that we are actually Romanians, so we kind of know our music pretty well. But it's all right to stick with the original score as much as possible and we are doing that in 95% of the times with original music. But that's the beauty of arrangements > they can be seen through your own vision@@gabithemagyar

@@VColorisQuintet i fully agree with you. I am afraid a lifelong interest in and love of village music makes me somewhat biased when it comes to folk music based performances. my apologies if i have caused offence, Just for your interest, here is the Pe Loc danced and played village style : kzbin.info/www/bejne/mJK8g3-IeMqDa6c.

@@gabithemagyar thank you for the great resource. If we would play an arrangement of that piece only, then I totally agree that it should sound like that. But in a context of multiple dances, that is a different story That's why we love Romanian folk music : it's not a museum, just a continuing developing organism,so it evolves and changes according to the players.
