इस बेमिशाल गाने के बारे में कुछ अद्भुत बाते है। पहला निर्माता लेखराज टण्डन को शंकर जयकिशन ने खुद आगे बढ़ कर फ़िल्म में संगीत देने की पेशकश की थी। जिससे फाइनेंसरों की लाइन लग गई। और स्ट्रगल कर रहे लेखराज टण्डन की किस्मत खुल गई। शंकर ने उन्हें कई धुनें सुनाई और चुनाव करने को कहा। टण्डन ने इस धुन को छोड़कर अपनी मनपसंद धुनें चुन ली और सन्तुष्ट हो गए। शंकर ने ललकारते हुये कहा अबे ओये टण्डन सबसे बढ़िया धुन को तो तूने छोड़ ही दिया। इसे लेले। इसका नशा बरसो बरस खत्म नहीं होगा। टण्डन ने यह धुन चुन ली। हसरत जयपुरी ने बोल लिख दिए। पहले यह सोलो गीत था। अकेले लता मंगेशकर की आवाज में ।मगर फ़िल्म के हीरो। शम्मी कपूर अड़ गए। टण्डन उनके यार थे। अबे टण्डन मैं इस गाने में कहा हूं। मेरी एंट्री कराओ। टण्डन ने कहा कि तुम हो तो मगर बिना गाने के। शम्मी कपूर ने कहा कि ऐसा नहीं होगा। मैं गाना गाऊंगा। तब मोहम्मद रफी साहब को बुलाकर नई लाइने जोड़ी गयी। फिर आया क्लाइमेक्स। फ़िल्म के प्रीमियर पर दिग्गज कलाकार प्रोड्यूसर मोहम्मद रफी साहब की एंट्री के साथ ही खड़े हो गए। तालिया बजाने लगे। लेख टण्डन गदगद हो गए। तीसरी बात। मरने के बाद मेरी खाक न हो परेशान। लाइने अल्लामा इक़बाल कीएक गजल में से ली गई है।

भाई साहब एक और अद्भुत किस्सा है इस गाने का मोहम्मद रफी और लता जी के बीच रॉयल्टी को लेकर जब मन मुटाव हो गया था जो एक लंबे अरसे तक साथ में काम नहीं किया इस अंतराल में रफी साहब के साथ सुमन कल्याणपुर ने एक से बढ़कर एक डुएट सॉन्ग दिए रफी साहब के साथ फिर उसके बाद वो समय आया जब रफी साहब और लता जी के बीच सुलह हो गई और जो पहला गीत फिल्म प्रोफेसर का ये बेहद खूबसूरत गीत साथ में गाया और फिर दोनो साथ में आखिरी समय तक काम किया

Lata Mangeshkar & Mohammad Rafi had recorded this song in their emotions packed voices under music direction of Shankar- Jaikishan.Legendary poet Hasrat Jaipuri had compiled its memorable lyric. Originally, only Lata Mangeshkar was to record this song as a solo.When Shammi Kapoor heard this song , he liked it immensly.He had a unique musical sense. He insisted upon tne director Lekh Tandon to include him also in this song and make it a duet. Poet Hasrat Jaipuri was asked to add the lines for Shammi Kapoor which Rafi recorded. When the shooting of this film was over,it was found during its editing that its actual footage exceeded the maximum prescribed limit. The Producer asked the editor to cut this song of this film. When music director Jaikishan learnt this,he strongly advised the Producer & director not to do so ,as this song was bound to be the best song of this film !
