Oral cancer is primarily caused by tobacco use, but poor dental hygiene, spicy food, and HPV may also be factors. Injuries inside the cheeks, such as bites or ulcers, do not typically cause cancer unless they persist and exhibit concerning symptoms.
Common symptoms of oral cancer include ulcers, difficulty speaking or breathing, and lumps in the neck. If these symptoms persist for over 15 days, it's crucial to consult a doctor, as early detection and treatment significantly improve outcomes.
Treatment options for oral cancer include surgery, radiation, and chemotherapy. Early-stage cancers may not require radiation or chemotherapy, leading to better results and quality of life.
Radiation can cause side effects like dry mouth, reduced saliva production, burning sensations, and darkened skin. These effects are usually temporary and can be managed with medication.
After surgery for tongue cancer, patients can regain normal speech and appearance, depending on the extent of the procedure and individual factors. Eating soft foods is usually possible after healing, but hard foods may be difficult to consume.
Relapse of oral cancer can occur due to continued tobacco use, even after successful treatment. Alternative therapies should not be considered as a substitute for conventional treatment.
Clinical trials for new cancer treatments are available for patients who cannot undergo conventional treatment. These trials offer potential benefits but also carry risks.
