This experiment doesn't show the variety of Red Laterite bricks used for construction. Although the average compressive strength is 3.5 - 4.5 N/mm2 for a good laterite stone, not all stones have the same compressive strength. The depth of rock and composition determines the strength of red Laterite stones. Basically, these come in 3 types : A) Some raw stones are very fragile and they are called 'വെള്ള കല്ല് ' (vella kallu). They have compressive strength of 1-2 N/mm2 approximately and are found and cut from soft layers of laterite bed rock. They look white to yellow with more large holes containing white and yellow paste and basically end up being used for exterior boundary wall construction, steps, etc, where high loading strength is not required. 'White' laterite stones (വെള്ള കല്ല് ) are the cheapest, costing about Rs. 35 -38 as of 2023 and may vary based onmany factors . B) Then there is the medium strengthed ones. These are found after cutting few layers of white, soft bricks. They have compressive strength of about 2-4 N/mm2 . These are generally used for construction of internal load bearing walls. These are reddish to crimson in appearance. They are priced from 45 Rs and above approximately. C) Then there is the strongest laterite stone which is called 'മേൽപ്പൊളി കല്ല് , (melpoli) in Malayalam, meaning 'the topmost layer', which have been in open air for thousands of years, or formed densely and have significantly higher compressive strength. Some have more than 7 N/mm2 as compressive strength. These are very heavy and can be used to build foundation of houses. Some strong stones can also be found on deep layers of laterite bed rock. Because the strength of stones vary like a gradient. One batch of stones necessarily doesn't need to look or have same physical properties of other batch. In addition to compressive strength, brick are also graded according to their appearance and shape. There are basically 3 qualities available for a customer. 1) 1st quality stones look sharp and in good shape. These are best for house construction. Having MPa of about 3-4 N/mm2. Size : 35 cm x 20 cm x 20 cm . Cost - Rs.45/- and above approx (As these are cut on their length and breadthwise, the height varies a bit as they are manually pulled out from the machine cut grids. Height varies from 20 - 23 cm. 2) 2nd quality stones look a bit broken or not as good as 1st quality stones. Their compressive strength may be same or different than 1st quality stones. Looks matter in this gradation more than compressive strength. Size is same as 1st quality but edges and corners maybe a bit broken. Cost - Rs.35-38 approx. 3) 3rd quality or 'മുറി കല്ല് ' as we say in Malayalam, are just broken pieces of laterite stones. These are mainly used for filling and construction of various base foundations for houses. Compressive strength : Depends of which layer of stones you have brought. Size : No perfect measurements available as these are broken pieces in of various shapes. Cost :These are measured not in numbers like 1st and 2nd quality stones, rather these are measured in 'loads' 1 load means 1 full truck of broken stones. Price is less compared to other 2 varieties. Cost - Rs. 3600 /- approx Cost is approximated and may change according to your location. I am from Calicut and these rates are from near by quarry from which I brought for my project. The cost and gradation of stones is actually done by workers or quarry manager and is done based on their experience with stones. Getting a good quality Red Laterite stone, in my opinion is a matter of luck, mostly and quarry owners may show one batch and send another batch. The key to getting a good deal is to pay only after the load arrives at your location. Visually check and make your you are getting what you ordered as this is a natural stone, some good stones may have a 'wire' or thin layer of division through the body of stone, which will break the stones into two if hit hard. *consult your architect/ contractor for more info and final decision.

@@naveedk5477 42 നാണ് ഞാൻ last 1st quality ഇറക്കിയത് കഴിഞ്ഞ മാസം. 40 to 43 ആണ് ദൂരം അനുസരിച്ച് ഇപ്പോൾ കണ്ണൂരിന് അകത്ത് വില വരുന്നത്. Normally ഒരു 5 കല്ല് free ആയി ഒരു load ൽ അവർ തരികയും ചെയ്യാറുണ്ട്. എന്റെ വീടിനായി ഇറക്കിയത് 30 rupees for 3rd quality, 38 rupees for 2nd quality, 42 for 1st quality
