V-Strom 650 Ride to Ouray

Loved Ouray,Silverton and Telluride and Durango, oh the whole bloody country. 6 of us from Australia rode through there in 2018 on hired Harleys.

51Dss, thanks for watching. No I had not taken that exact route before (though I had ridden 550 from Durango to Silverton before). I just plotted my route with maps. I don't have GPS. Not my daughter's first ride but first overnighter. We camped in Ouray for 5 nights. No helmet to helmet communication. I don't know the miles off hand. We made to trip to Ouray in one day, camped there and made day trips in the area. One the way home we spent a night in Durango in a hotel. If you are able to ride in CO go for it!

iRide uWatch Great to see your daughter riding on the bike. Although its obvious from your videos, you are big time experienced, I was impressed to see her geared up in gear that fit her, and was obviously enjoying herself! Something she will remember the rest of her life.

As a new rider I wasn't sure whether to get a cruiser or something like a strom for long trips out west I take every year, with New Mexico being my favorite place in the world. Your videos have convinced me that an adventure bike is the way to go and a vstrom looks to be more than sufficient. Thank you!

Great vid to watch - thanks for taking us along on that ride through those gorgeous landscapes. Had you been along that route before or did you rely on GPS/Maps to find your way; was that a first for your little girl? She seemed sort of neutral when you asked how she was doing - "kind of hot" - "lot of trees" - I know that's how it is with some people including children - they can be having the greatest time and yet it's hard to tell. How many miles in all and how many days was your trip. Did you use helmet to helmet communicators? Thumbs up on the vid!

Nice trip there, when you said going on the backroads, you wasn't kidding, even a little..lol Some of my family was asking, when can children ride, is there any laws besides helmets ect ? They trust me with their children, maybe because I am there granddad, and I ride a lot. Thanks for info you can give. yl

For taking kids I say they must be able to put their feet on the foot pegs. My daughter was 9 when we did that ride. Yeah I despise riding on interstates so I look for the most interesting back roads I can find. Thx for watching!

Yes that sounds like a good way, to gauge them for a ride on the bike, feet on the pegs, and one of those passenger belts, to help them hold on. I also pass the Interstates unless a need for speed is there, because they are less fun, and have more traffic, at least most of the time. On a another thought, I am thinking of buying a V-strom for touring, looks to be far superior to my K6 SV650n, and my Vulcan. Thanks for the info. yl

No, didn't need to. I gassed up in Pagosa Springs, then Durango, then Ouray even though I wasn't ever on empty.

Nice riding gear. Do you feel the VStrom 650 has enough power for 2-up riding on the interstate? Was that Lake City where your daughter had those pancakes? Great video, I spent some time between Ouray, Durango, Silverton and Lake City. Beautiful Country.

Hello! In the last year you probably figured out what Vstrom 650 is all about, but I can tell you something about my K4... I have since september 2016, about 2000 km (~1300 miles), because the weather is not so great in Romania, but what can I say about the bike is that is perfect for me. I have 1,82 m and 80 kilos, my wife is about 1,65 m and 60 kilos, no problem for the bike to go wild on takeovers. I will see in few months how is it handling with the luggage (Givi Maxia 50 topcase and two ~45 litres side-cases), a small tent, two sleeping-bags and inflateble matrice. The bike will have about 420 kilos, the maximum legal weight. Without luggage, sprinting is veeery ok, consumption is also ok (3,9-4,5 liters per 100 km), brakes with ease. Nothing to complain. Hope you got the bike, a very good choice for few money. Ride safe!

+George Lee No she was able to just reach the pegs. The one problem we had was on a afternoon ride, I was passing a car at near 90mph and saw in my side mirror she had fallen asleep and was falling over but woke herself up in the middle of my pass! Scared me to death.
