I think the great problem with VtM and the OWoD in general is that it was (and still seemingly is) written by people who are either lacking a central guiding idea or are afraid of their own story. V5 is so miserably stupid, same with W5, with how much it tries to pretend to be nice that it is self refuting on its face. Vampires are monsters, simple as. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy it, am running a game (loosely) based on Kindred: the Embraced right now. But I often find myself rolling my eyes at large parts of the lore changes and sometimes getting deeply frustrated. On the other hand, I often find myself enjoying a lot of the simplifications as it lets new players start pretty quickly and combat flows smoothly (if very, very, punishingly quick). Yet, at the same time, I find that the oversimplification of the disciplines, slow suggested XP rates, and unfortunate tendency for certain picks to just be better (depending on the kind of game you're running) leads to a lot more build convergence. In other words, you get a lot of vamps with similar sheets, no matter how interesting their lore. Doubly so with how limited the Flaws and Merits sections are as White Wolf continues to fail to get things like Resources and minions in general balanced. Never mind Haven dots. More mechanically, none of my players care about Resonance at all - it being essentially wasted space in a pitifully sparse core book - and I deeply, deeply dislike their publishing schedule. IMO, the core book should contain all of the major clans, Tremere, Sabbat, and Anarch, and all of the disciplines. Then each clan can have a clan booklet that goes into detail on them. As is, the corebook itself seems to lack huge amounts of content that really, really should have been in there. It's like if Pathfinder released a core book with only Fighter, Cleric, Rogue, and Ranger!
@d4arken3ds0ulАй бұрын
Resonance had so much potential But was so poorly implemented imo Ive only seen it used in the newer video games and even then just for a discount on disciplines I thought gorcing players to have to feed on specific resonances to upgrade their powers (after a point) was quite punishing and stupid, though given the idea made sense. It couldve been way better

@TheCountYT the feeding and hunger mechanics are mostly okay... And a few of the banes are better *casually retcons the Hecata and Old Clan Tzimisce to give them back their historic banes while letting the flesh sculptors and Assamites keep their new ones* Seems like it'd be a great set of mechanics and ideas to pull from for homebrewing the perfect system.

It feels like two steps forward and three steps back. Gameplay wise, I think there was some useful streamlining. Also happy with the emphasis on low-level play. Boosting the number of vampires in the world was also a good one. The plagiarism of images, lack of tact when introducing social justice concepts, and watering down of the darker and more unique aspects of the world is something I frown upon.

V5 isn’t the mature version of OWOD. It’s more like kids dressing up in their parents’ clothes. Some of the rules, like the hunger mechanics, are arguably better, but it’s trying too hard to be sophisticated and less “edgy” in its meta narrative. In reality it’s just tamer, not more mature.
@aaronblank23188 ай бұрын
I agree with you 10,000%. I also feel like V5 is designed for a very small scale, "intimate" sort of game. To me it seems like a BIG chunk of play time would be devoted to feeding, which is great for newer groups, but it might come across as boring to veteran players.
@OneLoneMan5 ай бұрын
Spot on.
@ThisisnotTwitter4 ай бұрын
As a player and ST Who started during revised edition, I have to disagree depending on your meaning. V5 is more mature in the sense it helps push the core characteristics of story, which is what the game is about. It pushes mastering the basics of smaller scale and more relatable aspects of WOD that story is much easier to manage within generally, especially for newer players which is what it has done a great job of bringing in. Aswell as improving rules like hunger. Previous editions made it much more easy for players and ST's alike to get lost in the fantasy and/or plot while their games story was less understood. In V5, groups that are ready for larger scale (stakes! Hehe, nudge nudge) games, or games that deal with darker subject matter, will not have an issue making the game work for their story using the 1st and golden rule of WOD since the beginning. Make it your own. If a group lacks the creativity and awareness to use that rule in this instance, then there is a good chance they lack the maturity and awareness to handle playing Sabbat or elders well.
@OneLoneMan4 ай бұрын
@@ThisisnotTwitter You can tell what kind of player you are and that you kick out people who don't agree with you are are OG of WoD. How do diseases survive inside vampires with no living cells to reproduce with?
@TheCountYT8 ай бұрын
The "Blush of Life" allows vampires to temporarily 'regain' their biological autonomy, which brings back their pulse, organ function, allows them to breath and blink, etc.. Not all vampires use it to great (or even good) effect, but those who regularly train and maintain the BoL, well you could imagine the benefits lol
@CSharpRenan6 ай бұрын
Not all microbes need living cells to parasitize in order to live. A lot of bacteria that cause diseases in humans can live quite well on a metal surface or the bottom of the ocean, they just find the inside of some parts of the human body a nice place to hang. Incidently the human body provides then food so sometimes they destroy stuff that you really need, or the bacteria excrete something which is poisonous to us. As for viruses: the stomach of a vampire pulses at all times with fresh blood. If a vampire feeds on two different people within a few hours or days, the vampire might pass on a disease from one person to another. Also, some viruses are able to crystallize themselves (yes, this is crazy!) and thus exist without a host for millennia until it finds itself inside a proper host again.
@craigstege63762 күн бұрын
V5 isn't all bad. I like how it stream lined a lot of dice rolling, the actual game plays really nice. A lot of people freak out about the "wokeness" but I mean, that was always there - the Brujah were always progressive to the point of crige, same with the Black Furies WtA side. And yeah the disclaimer at the start of the book is preachy, but once you cut through that chaff the actual meat and potatoes is more of the same with a smoother delivery. I've always just ignored and not bothered with the chaff I don't care about in these, and frankly all, games. Modern political zeitgeist matters far less to me in games than the timeless aspects of it - and should for anyone running any game. You take what you need and leave what you don't. The setting itself now is pretty interesting in its twist on things as well - no longer are vampires in conspiratorial control of EVERYTHING - its clear there are other players in the game. This becomes even more obvious when you grab Hunter: The Reckoning, the Hunters are very rightfully suspicious of most hunter organizations - ostensibly their goals align but the larger organizations true motives are just as worthy of suspicion and mistrust as the monsters they hunt, indeed even more so in some cases. The setting is certainly more mature in that nothing is really monolithic anymore - everyone is an island and their best method of survival is organizing into some form of archipelago nation state conglomerate. It's certainly a lot more interesting and flexible for Story Telling. As for Vampire the Requiem and the Chronicles of Darkness - Legitimately GREAT settings and games. Their only issue is that they were released by the same studio. If another company made the Chronicles of Darkness games and was like the Pepsi to World of Darkness's coke it would probably have accrued a much larger following. It legitimately does a lot of things much better from a horror perspective - the idea of Elders being fully powered but increasingly senile/dementia suffering monsters over time is horrific, both for the individual elder and anyone who has the terrifying experience of walking on eggshells around them as they find their bearings.
