(Click CC for English subs) Despite its regularity in the shortwave bands V13 or ‘New Star’ remains a very mysterious numbers station because there is very little information about it. Believed to be around since the 1970s it is probably among the longest running numbers stations now. Presumed to be transmitting from Taiwan New Star sends coded number messages for pro-ROC spies inside the People’s Republic of China.
(WARNING for headphones and earbud users: Radio noise could harm your ears.)
Thanks to Shadypyro90 for V13 recording / @shadypyro9063

Instead of January 21, it would be January 1, or even “number 1 message of January”(元月第一號電報)。Furthermore, what was written as 9 at the beginning of 5 digits sounds more like 有 (there is) and then 請 (please - in this case please prepare to receive).

Without doubt your channel continues to be one of the most fascinating on youtube. The atmospheres you create bring the topic and the respective times to life in ways even the BBC could do well to learn by.

Nice recording, It's quite a hard station to catch, probably because of all the noise around China. Quite a weird station, the intro music is quite eerie.

very interesting video! I just searched for this vid because some Chinese radio amateurs posted their recordings on bilibili. ever since 2000, there have been a group of people on Chinese forums discussing the Xing Xing Station and even trying to decipher it (although it's impossible). it's rather fascinating just thinking about PRC and Taiwan intellectual agents are still using this Cold War style communication methods to send messages, and those agents might have been spying there for decades... Also, it's not New Star, but Star Star. the mistake was because people can't differentiate Xin(New) vs Xing(star) through noisy radio broadcasts
@buzz_archive

Here's an article on why it was decided they should call it New Star. archive.is/SZ82r they decided that it was Xin instead of Xing but I wouldn't be surprised if it really was Xing Xing. In Asia we tend to repeat words to mean something different. But why do you think it really means Star Star?

Most likely it's Star Star - based on the Chinese Flag. The large star in the middle represents the CCP, and the small stars represent agriculture, labor, people, etc (something like that- it's been a long time since I've looked at it). What this station is suggesting is that the people are as large and significant as the CCP - basically agents are most likely involved in trying to exchange or eliminate the CCP.

I think there are some little mistakes due to the unclear audio. From what I hear, the messages say: 在這時間裡 (In this period of time) 有(There is/are) XXXX單位 (Unit XXXX) X月份 (Xth month) 第X號 (the Xth) X份電報(X message(s)),XX個字 (XX words) 現在我們開始播報(Now we will start broadcasting), 請XXXX單位注意(Unit XXXX please pay attention),準備抄收(get ready to receive) Take the message in 3:33 - 3:52 as an example, it says 在這時間裡 (In this period of time) 有(There is/are) 3594單位 (Unit 3594) 元月份 (1st month which is January) 第1號 (the 1st) 1份電報(1 message),22個字 (22 words),現在我們開始播報(Now we will start broadcasting),請3594單位注意(Unit 3594 please pay attention),準備抄收(get ready to receive) I assume the "the Xth" part is talking about the date, so this message will be: In this period of time, there is 1 message containing 22 words for Unit 3594 on 1st of January, Unit 3594 please pay attention and get ready to receive

I'm sure these are broadcast on HF frequencies. More than likely anywhere from 1.5 mhz thru 10mhz. Any shortwave reciever or HF ham radio with a decent antenna should work.

You can hear them on shortwave radio. As for its purpose and effect only the people operating it truly know it but since this method has been done for decades then it must be.

@@amer_freestyle1143Yes, Radio transmissions at the frequencies I specified do propagate worldwide, particularly at night. This is why these numbers stations choose to broadcast at these frequencies. The most important part of your recieving station will be your antenna. Im a ham radio operator and make worldwide contacts regularly on these same range of frequencies. If you decide to set up a receiving station let me know and I'll help you.

It could be military or law enforcement. I worked LE for Homeland Security and our voice communications were all automatically converted into Morse Code for archiving. If you have a regular police scanner you can often hear this (if you have it on scan continuously).
