I think what Mihoyo is doing with all the collabs, aside from getting an extreme amount of publicity, is that they are trying to almost normalise Genshin. Making it into common knowledge, such as its common knowledge that most people work jobs to make a living, or that most people attend a school public or in this case, almost everyone plays Genshin or consumes Genshin material in some way or another.

@@genshin4822 I think the majority of Genshin's players ARE casual players. The game isn't really meant to be difficult or a constant grind. I think because of hard core players this point has been missed quite a bit.

I think the collab also benefits the other party. They are tapping into a market of fanatic Genshin players, who are known to probably have questionable spending choices. So when it comes to collabs, I think that some of these are from the other party approaching Hoyoverse with an idea first.

A recent collab here in my home country of Thailand that totally catch me of guard is when Genshin collaborated with the tourism authority of Thailand for the Loy Kratong festival. By participating in the event for the festival, you can get some genshin goodies for free. Unfortunately I have to study at the university during the event period so I didn’t get to participate in the event. However, it is still an interesting collab considering the festival is supposed to be an event where we show our appreciation for the water deity and the event takes place during 4.2 where our hydro (fake) archon, Furina is in the spotlight.

I went to that event. Kinda a bit disappointed that there nothing much about Genshin in that event. It's like they used Genshin as a bait for Genshin fan to learn more about the history of Loy Krathong rather than having something the bridge between the game and the festival like Genshin theme Krathong or Genshin x Thai ancient snack etc.

The outfits we see in these collabs should be costumes you can purchase in-game. Kazuha & Beidou's Caddilac outfits are slick. Qiqi's ice cream outfit was really cute.

If you have ever seen Red Bard's video about living entirely off Evangelion or Fate merch, this probably could be done with Genshin. Also, I'm disappointed there was no Genshin hotel like the FGO ones.

I remember when Dragonspine was just releasing, and I walked into the living room right as my parents were watching an ad for the new update. It was just as the ad was ending and I don't remember what streaming service it was on, but I literally did a double take as I was walking to the game room to play some Genshin 😂

i feel like for some of these hoyo just has personal interest/enjoys themselves in and wants to collab with them lol. the most obvious ones are the Alps and recent Chinese Museum event with zhongli as theyve both used those as inspiration ingame.

There are 3 types of "collabs", product collabs, landmark collabs and artistic collabs, all 3 of which affects culture at different levels. Culture is a huge theme of Genshin and is what the story is actually about so it makes sense that they want to make the game recognisable at a cultural level. Product collabs are the most "shallow" but at the same time most effective for marketing, landmark collabs are 50/50 marketing and celebrating, appreciating important cultural landmarks of countries that inspired the game, artistic collabs are the most "pure" and intends to directly help support artists, especially traditional and classical art, and even museums.

Very good overview... One thing I want to add though is that while simply promoting the game is in itself already enough incentive, there's also a political dimension to all of this. Which is also one of the reasons why Asia is the primary target for those collabs... for now.

I was one of the organizers for our college's Philippine University Roadshow (specifically CIIT), and I have to say that the fact that we were picked as a venue for one of its events was mindboggling to me. In fact, it felt like we were contacted out of nowhere as well. Granted, we've worked with Razer Gold, therefore being a close choice for the event, its still appalling that it was even a thing.

I think Asian countries have also just leaned into doing this kind of thing. Any time I see videos of Japan I always see some anime characters or Miku posted SOMEWHERE in the video. And as someone who goes to cons, there literally are cars with characters showcasing on the side, so people will absolutely buy them. We have to keep in mind that watching anime or playing games is a hobby, and these hobbies can be expensive. As Aster has said, it's catering to the 1%, but that percent is still huge. We might think seeing this form of collaboration is insane, but we just don't see those things as big here in the west. The most we see are characters on cereal boxes, which is hilarious because if the west leaned into the way that Asian countries do things, they might actually make a ton more money and gain a popularity of interest. I mean who wouldn't get excited to see their favorite game character on the side of a bus?
