To everyone who said I forgot to measure "gear lash" while reinstalling the diff: THANK YOU! I had no idea I was supposed to. Unfortunately I don't have time to fix that mistake before the drift event so we're gonna have to hope I got lucky... in the meantime can someone please link me to a good tutorial on how to measure and adjust gear lash so I can fix it asap when I get home? Thank you! ❤

The friction modifier is for the clutches IN the LSD. Hence the "slip" you might feel in normal driving, and the engagement while trying to keep power equal to each wheel. Also, I wouldn't recommend driving it without lashing the gears. Even if its "close enough" to spec, its not spec. It will definitely explode if you put power through it, especially if you upset the driveline while sliding sideways.
@Primev25 жыл бұрын
noooooooooo you used a torch to heat the bearing up, thats highly frowned upon & is dangerous!!!
@nissanmikey5 жыл бұрын
You adjust backlash by adding or removing shims from either side of the carrier bearings between bearings and housing. the perfered amount of backlash on a 8.8 is - .012-.015. yukon gear and axle has some good videos. also tooth pattern is important aswell.

I don’t claim to be an expert, but I don’t think hearing a bearing with a torch is a great idea. Toaster oven is okay, torch is bad. You really want to heat it evenly, else you risk uneven wear and in turn will wear out the bearings faster. Other than that you did awesome. I think you unintentionally did it but it’s a good idea that your charcoal canister is below the opening of your fuel filler neck. Not a stock ECU but it’s still good for emissions and even the fact you kept one on the car amazes me. Good guy Gingium.

Everybody is talking about the gear lash. But installing a harness bar and straps isn’t a great idea either unless you have a HANS device. The three point was designed to save your neck and back if you don’t have a HANS device. If you’re strapped in with dual harnesses, and you get hit, your body isn’t gonna move but your head is. I’d be careful Caleb.

measuring “gear lash” is essentially trial and error. there are shims between the carrier and the housing on both sides and between the pinion and the backside of the pinion bearing. you should get gear paint, put paint on the ring gear, and then rotate the assembly to see where the ring and pinion mesh together. ideally, you get an even wear mark on the paint marks, meaning that the pattern is even on the front and back side of the teeth of the gears, and that it’s in the middle of the gear. if it’s off, you have to tear the whole thing down again and add/move/switch shims from each side to move the carrier left/right and the pinion in/out. you can also measure shims with a micrometer to make sure everything is 1000% perfect, but if the gear paint shows a good pattern it should be fine. (i work at an off-road fabrication shop and ford 8.8s with lockers are a popular jeep swap)

Gingium started balding and decided to just shave it off to end it on his own terms. He later said he likes this look way better. If other people are giving you a tough time for it it’s because they have their own problems they’re worried about. If you’re confident with it, nobody can give you shit. Main thing though is to just not care all that much what people might think.
