compression gauge to check where your timing is why waste your time putting one of those on just stick your finger in the hole

I ain't to rag on ya but if you know how to build a small block so well how could you not tell it was a hundred and eighty degrees off just by the way it was acting I could have told you that instantly just by the way it was acting
