Good Vid. As a former Audi/VW tech myself, my two cents..., I would have heavily leaned towards bent valves myself without even swapping coils BEFORE any engine teardown..... As a another person commented, with the cams out, a leak down check regardless of piston position would have told you everything you needed to know. Even without a leak down gauge set, could have just jamed a rag and air nozzle into the open spark plug hole and heard the air rushing into the intake manifold and likely out the exhaust too through one or more overlapped open valves on other cylinders. Also, just to remember old school basics, a 12 dollar vacuum gauge hooked to any straight intake vacuum source would have 99% confirmed bent valves as with two dead holes, you would have had severe intake vacuum fluctuation. Your vacuum gauge needle would have been jumping like a jack hammer. Anywho, a few other quick easy checks that are irrelevent really. Again, just my 2 cents. My approach would have had zero content toward an informative video useful to many folks out there....LOL, my video would have just been me in front of a camera for 15 seonds sayin, "My four toooo's T-Rex nedds a top end rebuild, hope she didn't pop her cookies out the bottom too. Son of a diddly!!!"

Btw, on engines with hydraulic lifters, if the valves get damaged, the lifters will sink a bit. So the cam lobes no longer touch the lifters on the affected valves. You can see light between the lifter and the cam. This is almost 100% always the case and can tell you right away what you're dealing with.

James Medina yeah I was looking at the Toyota Tacoma but they’re so expensive. 😅 My GTI is doing well! Pretty solid I’d say I haven’t had any major issues or really at all for that matter and I’m at 70k miles now. I’ve changed the oil every 5-6k miles and trans every 30k. I did have one issue where I over filled the gas tank and it flooded the charcoal canister but that wasn’t too bad to repair. Upgrading the brake and rotors this weekend. Want to do more but I’m still under warranty for another 20k miles or so 😅 How is your golf James?

Michael Hey. Will you just go stock on the brakes? I am a believer in Pagid German brake pads and Motul brake fluid. I owned 3 Passats all in a row, two with VR6 motors and last with 1.8t, the last one I got it new in 2000 and sold it 2014 or so. I tried to get out of my Passat and into GTI in 2008 but I could not go up in payments and was upset my Passat had lost almost all its value. It was crazy and I really REALLY wanted that GTI. Then I tried two years ago but was unlucky in buying one year used one and I tried to buy a Golf Diesel TDI but another customer beat me out. So I took a step down in comfort and the power department & drive a new Civic now, unfortunately not the Type R. So, I still wish I had my GTI. A friend of mine owns a VW dealership so if I really wanted one I reckon i could do it. But, I keep asking people like you because of service experience, carbon build-up(intake), and depreciation after 5-6 years.🤔

Michael My buddy loves his Tacoma and another friend of mine his Titan. Whenever I ride in the former's Tacoma I dislike the ride in town while I like his dad's Tundra. The prices between the two are not that different. If I got a truck I would probably buy used just for the occasional utility.

You're wrong 100%. The V6 30 valve and the V8 in this video are actually VERY reliable engines. With the cams removed, a leak down test with a breaker bar to hold the crank pulley would have taken five minutes and shown that cylinders 1 and 4 had bent valves. A six-hour gamble like that would not fly in the professional auto repair industry, but I suppose it serves as a good example of a $100 tool like a leak-down gauge being worth its weight in gold.

Honestly? A simple compression test of 0 is the red flag: stop immediately! There are bent valves. Just by the laws of probability. Get on the horn with the customer, take it from there. Would have been nice to see the cam tensioner and chain installation, that's where I'm at and lining up the timing marks and holding the two cams and the tensioner altogether while manipulating them into their journals is really a massive PITAso I feel I must be doing something wrong, obviously more so on the left bank due to it being in the back. BTW I have noticed that my engine is opposite, passenger side is bank two and driver is bank one because my number one is driver side, all of the marks lined up there, all four cams, the mark on the crank pulley, the previous mechanic marks from previous timing belt changes, the cam lock bar and the cylinder is at TDC on that side as well per old style screwdriver measure, can't get to the crank lock pin but this is the second Touareg that is set up that way, I have another one and previously replaced the timing belt and foot pads on that one two.

yeah that sucks no compression. why didn´t you use a scope camera to look inside the cylinder maybe to see if there is any hit mark on the pinston head? i ran in a similar issue like that on my car audi a4 quattro 2.8, but my car was acting a bit weird. first it had a long long i mean long crankig before it wanted to start, once it started runs a couple minutes rough, and i shutted down and start up again and starts easy and no rough or missfiring. but if the car seats for a couple hours acted like the beginning long long crank to start up. long story short it happened to be the hydraulic valve lifters they weren´t holding up any oil they ran empty after the car was seat for a while. i used 1quart of marvel mystery oil and ¨voila¨ the long long long cranking was getting to less long long and then long and now my car just start normal with no long crank. i ran the mystery oil for 200 miles and i changed the oil. at the beginning i made a compression test and i had no compressin on my cylinder 1, 3, 5 the 2, 4 and 6 were ok, that´s the reason my car when it started after the long crank was idling rough until the hydraulic lifters filled up with oil and then the 1 3 5 cylinder started to contribute to engine making the idling normal. well anyway just wanted to share my experience on my car sniff sniff hope it helps someone. BUT the most important is that we´ll be able to see more work on this touareg yeah,

Deutsche Auto Parts There are tricks you can do to prevent the crank from spinning. Taking the piston to slightly past TDC, makes it more difficult for the air to move the crankshaft. You can also do the test at BDC and the pressure will not move the crankshaft in the slightest. However, doing it at BDC could make diagnosis trickier, because at BDC more pressure tends to escape into the crankcase. Not the case here, because bent valves hold no pressure at all, but one doesn't know that originally going in.

If it's got misfires, even before you bother swapping coils...periscope/borescope it to save you heartache. If the piston crowns have eyebrows, move on. Oh...and avoid any 1st gen Touareg. That was VWs money pit of the early-mid 2000's. Then came the CC...then the EOS...

how did you install the cam adjusters? with the engine in or took the engine out?

They did with the engine in you take a camshaft out then you install the camshaft adjuster on them then you put everything back in it

It depends on the service it went through. Mine vw touareg V6 petrol 2003 with 220k miles no issue at all. I cant tell about the diesel ones. But from my experience even toyota diesel more than 100k miles u start having problems.... diesel.

Yup, called it. Skipped timing, bent valves. You can't go without regular, proper maintenance on these 4.2 engines otherwise stuff will brake. The prvious owner is probably one of these people who kinda don't understand that not everything is a Chevy smallblock in terms of indestructability.
@mikeg35295 жыл бұрын
VW could have avoided all these issues if they just put two simple gears at the end of those cams. No tensioner needed, and will last the life of the engine without issue.

@darryldee4675 жыл бұрын
That plastic chain tensioner and the way the chain passes over it, as in rubs over it looks like a bad design and it looks like VW did this on purpose so it would break eventually for more service cost to the owner.
@garypeatling79275 жыл бұрын
That's the way most tensioners work the length of chain on this would have though would last for ever lack of lub or bad materials

thank you for reminding me never to buy a german car.
@eaglevision9935 жыл бұрын
As a German i can totally agree to this. German cars after the 80s are hard to repair throwaway junk. Made as cheaply as possible aside from what the uninformed buyer sees. Nice interior and exterior looks, worst engines and transmissions and cutting corners wherever possible aslong as most parts make it barely beyond warranty.
@tonyd32663 жыл бұрын
My guess is rebuilding a 40v set of heads will pretty quickly guide you to a low mile set of used heads. 5 valves per cylinder and its a combustion chamber that looks like its all valve faces and spark plugs from a crashed UFO.

There are many ways to create dynamic valve timing, yet they chose the worst possible. German auto: engineered to fail, to fail miserably, and too expensive to fix.

So much for German Engineering... The stuff is only great until it breaks and turns into a money pit. VW needs to hire more Japanese engineers to get rid of all the plastic bits in their engines
@ronaldderooij17745 жыл бұрын
Makes me wonder how bank 2 tensioners are doing. I would have done a scope inspection first. I don't know how many miles are on this car. But VW nowadays makes cars that they plan to last 110.000 miles or 180.000 km. That is common knowledge in Europe. It used to be more (150,000 mi/250.000 km) but times change.... I think only the Japanese construct cars for that mileage nowadays.

i love how people buy german cars for reliability ... yet cry their eyes out as soon as they connect a computer to their cars ;) meanwhile, my 10 years old honda civic type r FN2 who've been driven like it was stolen from the dealership is still running like a clock and never costed me a dime over the new tires, a couple battery, and replacing the breaks a couple times. needless to say my next car will be a japanese one.

AMATEUR QUESTION : If it has bent valves, why can't you just replace the bent values ? Why does the who head have to be replaced ?
@Dickusification4 жыл бұрын
The head has to be removed to pull the valves. The head would prob be ok.
@benupde19795 жыл бұрын
If you would have just pulled the Cam Followers while you had the cams out you would have seen bent valves 🤦🏻♂️ Any that were bent would not be the same height as all the rest. Waste of time reassembling it like that.

Is there a need to replace the cylinder head. Can`t you just replace the valves?
@digitalrailroader5 жыл бұрын
usually when a valve gets bent (and especially in this case where the damage is severe enough to cause 2 dead cylinders), it also wrecks the guide that it rides in.
@deebee685 жыл бұрын
I would expect that a compression test, regardless of the cam adjuster being replaced would’ve showed exactly the same thing. Cylinder 4 is dead.
