Ah I realised I didn’t show how I applied the graphite powder clearly enough. I just used the waterbrush (with clear water in it) and dipped it into the powder. More like, just touch it. The more powder I pick up, the darker the wash will be.

Enjoyed the video. Your vacations are like our when our son was little ...pretty much all about him. Hes grown up now but still comes into my drawing room after his work and tells me all about his day. I love that interuption. Beautiful artwork of your trip. Thank you for sharing how to incorporate it on a busy trip❤❤ love your style and your gentle voice❤❤

Great ideas. I've been experimenting with water-soluble pens that I purchased from the local Dollar Tree store. I just do the sketch and then use a water brush to touch the areas I need shaded.

That should be an interesting technique. And it keeps things handy. I suppose it might be like colouring with water soluble colour pencils too. So much to explore. I like how a small change can change the look of the art. I’m presently experiment with diluted ink in water brushes. That also keeps things handy:)

I love your work. The style of your drawing is inspirational. I particularly like the way you kept your selection of tools simple, I find it all to easy to get lost in my pencil case. Great work

Thanks Mark. I had to force myself to keep it simple. I often have too many choices because I do so much art shopping! Haha

for a vacation where you thought you wouldn't have much time to draw, it seems like you did a lot of wonderful sketches! that graphite wash is amazing, you get a great variety of tonal values with it. the drawing of your wife in a moment of repose is beautiful. i hope you feel better soon!!

Thanks Alice. I figure that just focusing on darks and lights with the graphite wash does speed things up. Getting better every day:) I like how artistic you made the drawing of my wife sound haha.

Hello from Perth! I’ve been following your channel for a while so it was strange to see my city in a video 😊 I’m in the same boat travelling with young kids and having to scale back expectations of doing much drawing. Some great tips here as always, I’d like to try the comic panel approach someday.

Haha yes I imagine it must be so. It was my second time since I was 8yrs old. We wanted to go someone open. It was strange to see so many Singaporeans there too. I think we were all trying to get away from the heat to enjoy your cool climate there! Yeah although I scaled back, I realised that I did draw quite a decent amount. So perhaps it helps to keep the technique simple. When our kids grow up, we will have more time!:)

Wonderful vacation, I hope you are feeling better now. The graphite powder gives a nice texture, another thing I wanted to try this year. ^^

Yes I’m almost fully recovered. Thanks! There is the graphite block version which is less messy. But the powder version is less expensive. I’m experimenting with adding gum Arabic to make the powder more solid. So far, it’s working!

Excellent perspective to keep a holiday enjoyable and stress-free! I have some of that powdered graphite, but I haven't tried using it yet. Your sketches inspire me now to get it out. Looks a bit messy, though, for sketching on location!

You have art tools you haven’t used?😂 I should use the acrylic gouache I only used 3-4 times since I bought it. The powder is quite neat if you put it in a small plastic container. Works well with just a water brush. But I think the artfraf graphite block in a tin might be neater. I don’t have that. Yet.

@@Drewscape-art I have the cake/solid ArtGraf in a tin, and I love it! Very portable and neat. I guess neatness is important to me. 😆

@@tinakoyama8258my threshold for mess might be higher. But I’m still drawn to the tin too. It looks so compact and beautiful. I’ve managed to make my powder into block form by added gum Arabic.

Thanks for taking us along on your trip, Drew! I’ve never tried water soluble graphite. I love the effects! To clarify, your water brush also had diluted ink and you applied the graphite with that? Thanks again!

Hi Tara Kate, I only used water in my water brush this time. But after I got back, I’m now using diluted ink in my water brush. That is also a good and easy way to do washes:)
