A cutting-edge vaccine candidate developed by QIMR Berghofer has achieved effective, long-term protection against Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) in pre-clinical models.
EBV is a member of the herpes virus family. It is carried by around 95 percent of the population. Most of us are unaware of the virus lying dormant in our bodies. Infection usually occurs in early childhood causing very mild symptoms.
However, in some people EBV can lead to severe illness. Those who catch the virus later in life as teens or young adults can develop infectious mononucleosis, or glandular fever, which is a major risk factor for a number of diseases and cancers.
A landmark study published last year established that EBV is likely the leading cause of multiple sclerosis (MS), an incurable neurological disease where the body’s own immune system mistakenly attacks the protective coating around the nerves causing debilitating symptoms.
Preventing EBV-associated infectious mononucleosis could potentially lead to the prevention of MS in the future, but despite worldwide research efforts there is still no vaccine available.
The new QIMR Berghofer vaccine candidate potentially offers a breakthrough approach that combines two powerful arms of the immune system to target the virus in both acute and latent infection.

This is great news! Going through an EBV infection currently and it seems to get worse each time I get another flare up. Hopefully a vaccine for the general public soon.

How do they plan to avoid a possible cross-reaction due to the molecular mimicry of this virus with myelin proteins?

If the damage has been done it won’t fix it. But it might end future decease. What it might do to those with it is unsure. Perhaps at best no further damage?

@@themilkman7367I’ve heard vaccines can help because it prevents the disease from coming out of remission. Like the shingles vaccine.

It won’t. However this knowledge is already steering research into new MS disease modifying treatments targeting the dormant EBV in those who have antibodies. There is some evidence that EBV reactivates in the B Cells where it resides, and triggers MS relapses. This is probably why Anti CD20 Drugs or B Lymphocyte Killers like Ocrevus and Kesimpta are so effective. Also why Lemtrada and AHSCT ,which destroy the immune system and reboot it work well. Although as EBV lives in the bone marrow, the only way to completely eradicate it would be a complete bone marrow irradiation and transplant from a non EBV donor, which is extremely risky in itself For now, I would say that Ocrevus and Kesimpta (and Rituximab) are the best available weapons against EBV reactivation.
