This is one of the most exciting videos I’ve seen in awhile. I hope to be able to experiment like this myself someday! Great video, cheers!

Would adding a magnet to the outside of the flask and the inside just cause more oxidation or more agitation for better flavors? I don’t have a rotovap yet. I’m just curious. Could the water bath be a ultrasonic cleaner. Would that be a plus or minus?

Hello Eddie, greetings from Argentina. Your videos are great. I ask you a question regarding the distillation of alcohols in the rotavap: How do you separate the methanol alcohol or what is called "head" from the ethyl alcohol that would be the "heart"??? Thank you, a big greeting.
@EddieShepherd Жыл бұрын
I only work with good quality high proof neutral grain alcohol, which has already been distilled and does not contain any methanol. That would be my advice too for safety

Hi Eddie, amazing video as always! If I could ask one quick question. I happen to be in the market for a rotovap, and I’m looking for at the Buchi R-100 which I noticed is the same one you have. Could you share the model of the Pump and cooler please? I’m thinking it’s the V100 for the pump and the F105 for the chiller? Many thanks!
@EddieShepherd3 жыл бұрын
Hi, of course no problem, I really like my Buchi, I have the F105 and the v-100, pretty much the entry level set up for cold distillation with a rotavap. Its all very expensive kit but it opened up so many options with food and distillation for me that its now a few years in integral to my cuisine

Thank you for all your high-quality videos! Do you discard any amount from your first distillation (heads)? What is your method for making a safe, drinkable alcohol without methanol?
@EddieShepherdАй бұрын
I’m re-distilling using high quality neutral grain alcohol - so that has already been cut and does not contain methanol - the danger from methanol is people distilling alcohol from a base they fermented to produce alcohol themselves, which is illegal too. My licence an method is for buying alcohol (already distilled to remove the methanol), adding flavours and aromas to that and then low temperature re-distilling that delicately capture and preserve those flavours
@pedramrafie1507Ай бұрын
That is helpful to know! Thank you for your educational video! I'm looking forward to many more.

Great video Eddie! Quick question, what is your Mbar set at on an infusion like this?
@EddieShepherd2 жыл бұрын
Hi, I gradually reduce from starting at about 70 mbar, dropping the pressure down as far as 10-15mbar by the end of the distillation

Hi Eddie! Very interesting video, thanks for sharing! I am working on a university project about extracting flavours using vacuum distillation and would love to get in contact with you to learn more about the method. Hope to hear from you!

Do you need a chiller for a rotovap for culinary usage??
@EddieShepherd Жыл бұрын
Hi, yeah you do need the chiller really, basically in order to do any low temperature work you need to be able to chill the condensing coils down to 40C cooler than the heating bath. So to use the rotavap at anything under 40C you need to be able to chill the coils down to 0C or ideally lower (I run mine at -10C typically). I will have a much more detailed video on the rotavap coming in a month or two where I cover a lot more on the technical aspects and different uses and techniques. But in short the chiller is necessary for all the type of low temperature work I do with it, unless you get one of the rotavaps with a 'cold finger' condenser in which case if you have liquid nitrogen or dry I you can use those to chill the condenser cold enough.

Hey Was wondering about the legality around home distilled spirits. Is there any specific licenses required for specific countries. And, is re-distilling of spirits in a rotovap legal? Please help
@EddieShepherd Жыл бұрын
The laws are different in different country’s, you would need to find out the specific rules for where you are. In the UK I had to apply to the government for a ‘rectifiers’ licence and give them the plans, safety information, processes I would be using. This is the licence that most small gin makers use in the uk as it covers ‘re-distilling’ of a spirit with added flavours which is then diluted to a lower ABV than it started at. I’m also a registered food business - registered and inspected with the local council so that helps with the application too I think. You would need to check the laws where you are and probably get some specific expert advice on those

Do you distill the base alcohol in vacuum have you scaled this up to larger unit
@EddieShepherd2 жыл бұрын
I buy neutral grain alcohol to use as my base alcohol and dilute that back to 45% ABV typically before which-ever type of infusion / distillation I will do

Hello Eddie, are your services available? I am working on a non alcoholic gin, I have a award winning distiller I am working with but most distillers are not getting what I am trying to do. I have some small 10ml samples that I want to recreate, I feel you would nail it, it's not that complex, it's more about the method.
