This is a part 2 of 2 trying to make a vacuum set-up for the lathe. This time, I was able to make it all work, and it works really well! A vacuum in the shop can be used for so many other things than just a lathe; vacuum bag systems for forming odd shaped parts, lamination and veneer work, and even systems that can be used for fixturing and holding down work, which can replace many other vices or clamps. If you are looking for a good place to get some ideas for vacuum in your shop, perhaps this video will help!

The Robinair unit looks like a great pump. I've messed around with a few of them, settled on a Venturi for my bagging and other needs... I may need to look into this for a long-term solution.

I hope that you are doing as well as can be. As for the reason the oil needs to be changed so often, is because vacuum pumps are designed to pull moisture out of the refrigerant system. It gets into the oil and will turn it milky if it is not changed out. Unless you have a drier on the inlet side, it will get moisture in the oil. In the old days, we used a moisture trap that had dry ice in a pot, and the suctioned air/moisture would freeze to the outside of the pot.
