Accurate pressure measurement is key in vacuum-assisted production. Only the right pressure can ensure the efficiency of the process and a high-quality end product. There are a variety of different sensor technologies available to check that this pressure is attained. Each technology measures a specific vacuum range with the highest accuracy. In this video, we will show you the principle behind hot cathode technology.
Hot cathode technology provides excellent accuracy in the high and ultra-high vacuum range (3·10-3 to 5·10-10 hPa (mbar)). This gauge measures gas ionization via thermal electron emission. The cathode emits electrons, which collide with gas molecules, splitting them into one electron and one cation. The collector attracts the positively charged cation. The more cations hit the collector, the higher the current, and the higher the pressure of the gas being measured.
