I really love tube circuits. One of these days I'll get around to finishing the tube amp that I was making with magic eye tubes to show the levels on the two channels. I don't really need it, but I have very fond memories of a radio my grandparents had that used magic eye meters that I was absolutely fascinated with as a kid. There's not of devices left these days with those style of level meters that are still working or reasonably restorable, but the magic eye tubes are all over eBay fortunately.

In this style of radio the iron core is the directional antenna, so it would make sense that you touching it will help with gain. The audio output of these circuits are typically high impedance at least 2k ohm or higher. If you were to use a crystal radio earpiece without the transformer you may have had better results. Or earbuds after the transformer would have worked as well. The 3 tube set will allow you to drive a speaker

A lot valves use transformers in the audio output which might account for low volumes. Just a thought. Great to see you try out things that take you into new areas.

Nice project! Your anode supply voltage is very low causing distortion and low output power. These valves are typically suitable for 70 to 90V.

You could use 3 PP3 batteries taking the supply up to 27v. Also check the load impedance of the 2P2 and the turns ratio of the transformer and see what impedance speaker you will need. Using the wrong speaker can really mess things up as well. All in all it looks an interesting start for experimentation.

I think the device would work better if you ran it with more than 9 volts, since tubes are high impedance devices they will work poor with low voltage plus you get very little power out of it as well which tend to distort. too bad in my country AM radio is not available at all so it is pretty much useless here
@ELECTRONOOBS2 жыл бұрын
I will try. I've used them at 12V but I was afraid with more than that since the schematic was marked as 9V. Thanks!
@Pulverrostmannen2 жыл бұрын
@@ELECTRONOOBS as long as your capacitors are rated for the voltage these DL92 tubes are rated for a maximum plate voltage of 90 volts. And the G2 grid should not exceed 67 volts so the tubes have a good headroom upwards. However does these tubes have a very small output with a maximum of about 270 milliwatt at absolute most so you won’t get much. However is the power increasing with the voltage. But check that your resistors are suitable for the increased voltage so that the led and other stuff won’t take damage. Otherwise you could probably safely go up to 60 volts without any issues :)
@NiHaoMike642 жыл бұрын
@@Pulverrostmannen Easy solution is to just omit the LEDs, actual (old school) audiophiles consider LEDs under tubes like putting cheap ketchup on fine sushi.
@Pulverrostmannen2 жыл бұрын
@@NiHaoMike64 ha ha I know right? I have built several tube amps and have a complete hifi system which I built myself and I didn’t use any LEDs to light my tubes. It’s better to use tubes that glows much to begin with instead ;) that we all like to watch! Nothing like 500 volts feeding tubes glowing with red hot cathodes. Omg I like that!

When you show the schematics, can you do us all a solid and show us straight on and don’t move it for half a second so we can screen shot it. It’s just so easy to screenshot Edit: I tried using your link and that website is just the worst. Theres no actual download link, just a bunch of traps that look like download links. And for some odd reason I couldn’t save it to my photos like saying. And its not from a lack of trying. Idk

Am I the only one who is surprised by the low 9V power supply for a tube? That's way too low. Even for a tube rated at only 60V.
