Darth Vader from Portugal: Dressing up my Darth Vader Episode 3 costume... Quite a complicated and elaborate task, I'm afraid.

Q: How tall are you?
A: I'm 1,76m which is about 5ft9.
Q: Aren't you a little short to impersonate Vader?
A: The actor who played Vader in the Original Trilogy was around 2m tall. Most people are not that tall... Not even the actor who played Vader in Episode III ROTS. However Christopher Reeve who played Superman was also more than 1,90m tall and I don't see anyone wondering whether someone needs to be that tall to dress as Superman. The answer is no! No one is to short to impersonate Vader, but the Armors manufacturers haven't so far made a resized version of Vader's armor. Available armors are the same size of the armor of the movies. This makes them look weird on anyone shorter than 2m tall.
Q: Is this the "Supreme Edition" Darth Vader costume?
A: No it is not!.. The Supreme Edition is a mass produced costume, made in factories. The materials of the "Supreme Edition" are cheaper and not movie accurate. This costume is a movie replica in true Argentinian leather and Fiberglass. The "Supreme Edition" is in plastic and faux-leather. The "Supreme Edition" costs around $750. This one cost around $3000 and was purchased from several different private props makers. True movie replicas artists.
Q: How much did your costume cost?
A: Around $3000 which includes the voice changer (not the voice changer in this video, the one in other videos I have).
Q: Are you a 501st Legion Member?
A: Yes, my ID is SL-9151, but I decided to change my status to "Inactive", since like any other big organization, the internal politics and intrigues inside the 501st Legion are really starting to smell bad, and not worth wasting one's time. Reminds of why I also had to resign from Environmental organizations in the past. when you spend more time arguing about internal intrigue, than working for the organization's original purpose... It's time to leave.

Not really: I've explained... This is the same size of the movie. But since I'm not the same size of David Prowse, it looks bigger in me. Actually, a simple proof of what I'm saying is that if you look carefully and compare the mask with the shoulder armor, you'll notice they have exactly the same size ratio between them, as in Episode 3. You'll see that all the hard parts are slightly too big for me. Otherwise it's a great costume.

Wow, interesting. I had no idea the boot soles were so thick, but then again the character is actually about 6'8" or 2 meters tall according to the book. The shoulder piece is a bit too big. The cape is supposed to hang forward of the shoulders to almost cover him. Please don't take this the wrong way, but Darth Vader is really supposed to be played by someone over 1.83 meters (6') tall just because of how big the shoulder piece and helmet look. Sad in a way about how many little kids love Darth Vader. The character was a brutal killer.

With all that exageration in details on the defects list of my costume, I start wondering if you have wrote to Lucasfilms expressing your disapointment for incompetence like the one displayed everytime a shorter stuntman used the vader costume making the chest box come too close to the shoulder armour, like the scene where Vader chops Luke's hands off... Also have you told Hayden Christensen how much he needs to work out before he looks like David Prowse?

Just check ebay for Vader Armor, Vader Helmet, Vader Costume, etc... And choose "higher price first" if you're looking for a costume of this build quality. This is a $3000 costume in the whole. It's fiberglass and true Argentinian leather. There are also expensive electronics for the voice changer (not this one but the one in my other video). If you want a cheaper (lower quality) version for around $700 USD, search ebay for "Supreme Vader" or "Vader Rubies". This is all the info you need.

The hard parts (helmet, armor, etc...) are perfect for your size. The Leather suit and the cape, you'd have to order them tailored to your measures.

Just, how tall do you think I am, to say that? One of the ways to see that, is the distance between shoulder armor, chest box, and belt. If I was that short, they would overlap each other. If you just see episode 5 scene where vader cuts luke's hand, you'll see the stunt is shorter than me.

It's cool but the main problem with a Vader costume is you need to be huge like David Prowse in order to look convincing as Vader. I'm short so I can never wear a Vader costume. I'm not sure how tall you are but yeah the helmet looks pretty big and the same goes for the shoulders. Still a cool costume but if you plan on looking a bit more convincing you might wanna change to a smaller helmet or something atleast ;D I wear a mandalorian and tie pilot costume. Both don't require me to be tall.

@SSSoM3: I will explain, my friend: The Supremem Edition is a costume that mimics the one from the movie but it's made for mass production for the general public. The materials are plastic and faux leather. Costumes like this you see on the clip are REALLY like the one from the movies: They are made of fiberglass (not molded plastic) and true leather (not faux leather). Furthermore they are not mass produced they are made one by one and taylored to fit (the leather parts, not the fiberglass).

@Myserieden: Oh no... This is indeed a two piece helmet. The helmet and the mask are separate. However this is indeed a bit big. even the Master Replicas version is a bit smaller. The MAsk is the same size of the MR but, the dome(helmet) is bigger in this case, which doesn't help since I'm only 5ft 9. The shoulders are also too big as you say. But I've bought a new slightly smaller version as you can see in my other clips. I will be buying an even smaller one soon.

They only make it Dave Prowse's size, I'm afraid... But if you know of someone who makes it customized to any person's size, I'll be glad to know... This is an Episode 3 armour and I'm about the same hight of Hayden Christensen. However they make these hard parts the same size as David Prowse's, who is far taller than Hayden. But what you say is true, really... Although this costume is always praised where ever I take it (like the Star Wars worldwide Expo).

1.85m is like the minimum height for Vader. Heyden Christensen who played Vader on Ep. III was 1,87m and still had to wear platform boots, padding, etc... You would still look funny with this costume unless you use lots of padding and platform shoes. 1,85 is not that much taller than 1,77. It's 8cm only... That's less than my boots platforms, lol. ;) The original actor playing Vader, David Prowse was about 2m tall and a body building champion. This helmet and shoulder pads are sized for him. :)

There are improved smaller versions but I still haven't had money to buy it! I on the other hand, am not particularly tall for being Vader. I'm 1,77m and should be at least 1,85m. But with platforms on the boots, it gets closer to the proper height. Nevertheless, I need to get some interior platforms instead. Regards.

@southernmisfit : The actor who played Darth Vader in the First Trilogy was David Prowse who was 6Ft 6 at the time he played Vader. Then the actor who played Vader in the Second Trilogy (Eps. I to III) was merely 6ft, his name is Hayden Christensen and just like me, he had to have talons inside his boots and several other ways of making him look taller. But he was a shorter Vader. I am 5ft 9 myself, so I'm slightly even smaller but as much smaller as it may seem on this vdeo. Just one inch less.

Some things were changed: The boots (obviously), the cape chain and the chest plate. 2. The 501st is THE officially recognized by Lucasfilm worldwide association. I liked it more! :) How does the MR helmet compare to Portumac's in size??.. I always wondered which one is smaller.... I'm 1m77 so we're almost the same height. But my hair volume and shape makes my head look big. Also my torso and arms are long compared to my legs. This makes me look shorter, eheheh....

@SSSoM3: In fact, if you compare the quality of the costume in the videos on the right collumn you can see the difference of a costume like mine (Darth Vader at Celebration 3) and a Supreme Edition (My Supreme Edition Darth Vader Costume) Look at how solid heavy and shiny the fiberglass looks when compared to the thin and bouncy molded plastic. Not to mention the quality of the cloth and leather. I am 5ft 9''. If I was 7ft, the costume would look even better, of course. :)

Yes, I'm too short. David Prowse who played Vader, was around 2m tall so... It's hard not to be too short to be Vader. I'm 1,77/1,78m so, I'm obviously too short. However, I'm almost as tall as Hayden Christensen so, I didn't really see that as an impediment to get a Vader Costume. In fact, I can't imagine anyone who likes Vader, to let that keep him from getting their hands on such a perfect costume replica, if they had the chance (or funds) to do it.

Very hard to put on! Even harder to wear it for a long time. More than once I wore it for a whole night... some 12 hours. After that my neck muscles were hurting like hell. You see... This is not a "wearable" plastic molded costume like Rubie's costume. This is fiberglass and leather like in the movie. I was not nervous... But the first time I wore it, I was very anxious to take it on the streets and get public reaction.

Such a costume is almost a custom costume. All the soft parts (leather suit, robe, cape...) were taylored to my size, and you can do the same. As for being tall, that's an advantage, not a problem when it comes to the hard parts (mask, armor...) Being skinny is irrelevant. You can see my armour has inner padding. If you think of Hayden Christiansen (who played DV in Episode 3) you'll see his at least as skinny as you, probably.

No. They officially licenced a costume that would emulate the look of a DV costume for a reasonable price. That's the Supreme Edition DV Costume. What I have is one step above: It's a movie replica made by private props makers. It costs 5 times more because it is made in fiberglass and true leather like the one from the movies... This is not commercially sold or mass produced. This is not molded plastic and faux-leather like the supreme edition costume. This cost me $3500 aproximately

Always good to read pertinent comments, which are a minoroty here... ;-) Yes, music would make it a lot better i suppose. As I have stated here before. DV costume is divided into hard and soft parts. The soft parts of this costume have been custom taylored for me. The hard parts are fiberglass 1:1 sized with the movie hard parts that David Prowse wore (He's more than 2m tall). However, I've already sold them since I found someone who can make fiberglass props to my size.

Yours is in hard molded plastic and faux leather. This one is in fiberglass and true leather. The true leather parts were actually taylored to fit me in perfection as you can see. The hard fiberglass parts however were not taylored, hence the excessive size of shoulders and helmet. That's why this costume cost $3000 and yours cost around $500. This is a different thing... Not a commercially sold costume, but rather a collectors prop replica.

How many times do I have to repeat this? Well, forever I guess, since no comment posters read the previous comments, usually... It's both the costume too large and the wearer not big enough. I'm almost as tall as Hayden, from Episode 3!.. But this helmet and shoulders are the same size than the ones used by David Prowse. Even if Hayden Christiansen was to use these it would look like it looks in me. they had to make the costume smaller for Hayden when they shot Ep3.

Another costume? Do you really think I would change my costume to another Star Wars character just because of me not being as tall as David Prowse?? Being Darth Vader my favorite character by far... I will rather get a customized shoulder armor and better boots than change character. Furthermore, if Lucas himself would have thought that way, they would have never have accepted Hayden to play DV in Episode 3.

Here I am to reply my friend!.. I believe this is not the costume you will receive for 794 USD,. This is an actual fiberglass/leather high quality replica, It's an overkill to buy a costume like mine for wearing. This is more of a collectors movie prop. I think the breathing doesn't sound as accurately like the movie, in the Supreme Edition costume you will get, but it will come close. I am using an mp3 with the breathing sound recorded from the movie.

Some $3000 USD for the complete Vader suit. I bought slowly throughout a whole year. The Superman returns I will post a video one of these days... IT was merely $300 USD. I hate talking about the costs of things like a typical Nouvelle Riche kind of jerk, but so many people asks this... That I end up revealing it, lol... It all started about 3 years ago for the vader costume, but Superman costumes I've had since I was 7 years old. I'ma true fan. I also love DV, but only recently could afford it.

Not really comfortable, but let's say it's wearable. Don't think you can move around freely and swing your lightsaber at will... You can... But you need a lot of time to get used to the costume. Furthermore, after a while it weighs a lot in your neck and shoulders, because fiberglass is not all that light. But with some sessions at the local gym to strengthen these muscles... It get's better.

This must be how you think: 1) Grown people don't use movie props. 2) If they happen to use them, they should do it in seclusion and never admit they do it. 3) No Sci-Fi fans or conventions exist. Last but not least you seem to know things about the costume that are not even perceptible in the movie (like straps on/straps off). I prefer the whole suit to move when I move a limb than having my pants patern exposed when I sneeze, as it happens in so many 2 or even 3 piece suits. The other deffects, I accept, and it is true that the soft parts are mostly ROTJ, but then again where do you see so many better costumes than this one?.. Rubies Supreme?..

1st: My costume was purchased from different manufacturers. (Argentina, USA, Norway...), most of them acquainted at eBay. The final price was around $2500 USD. 2nd: No, the shoulder armor never even comes close to fall off. It doesn't even move, with the ergonomic inside foam padding I added. You can see that in my other clip "Vader em Alcobaca", where I move around a lot. It's in "more from this user".

You won't believe it, but I had a ROTS chestbox from Portumac/X_T_R_M (same material source) and I sold it because I liked this one the most. I had them both and finally decided to keep this one from the Rubies costume. Maybe I was wrong but I prefer the lights and the blinking in this one, although they may not be as movie accurate... I't a little bit like the helmet thing... I prefer this one to the MR one. Maybe I'll get a MR also some day.

Hi!.. Well, The hard parts I got from a Norwegian seller and they are all 1:1 sized in fiber glass. The so called soft parts where custom taylored in leather and cotton to my measurements by a person in Argentina. The overall quality of the costume is way superior compared to the supreme edition sold by Rubies. The voice is achieved by a voice changer kit I assembled myself, and the breathing from an mp3 player. That's why all the wiring you see on this clip. It cost me around 3500 USD.

I bought this costume on Ebay from several different movie props makers. Just make a search there and you'll find them. But if you want something this quality (fiberglass, true leather, etc... You'll need to sort your search results by "highest price first". ;) It cost me around $3000 total at the time but, now it's reasonably cheaper.
