Just playing devil's advocate here, but as a post-apocalyptic shopkeep, I feel I am owed extra dues for my clear survival expertise and determination for having kept myself alive this long as well as putting myself in harm's way posting up right near bosses and hordes to provide you, at convenience, mildly interesting gear of which I make sure offers you only a slight advantage, as to lean you towards my services again later... You say I'll be safe because of you, but is it not I who beats you from place to place on your journey, in most cases clearing out the area beforehand so you have a safe haven to shop and barter? Adventurer, you oft have naught for a name - while I have established businesses across multiple continents to fund. Remember that next time you complain about my 20% offer price for your wares...

Tips: 1-the game has five classes u need to unlock them by leveling up 2- if u can change controls, set both "walk" and "down" to the same button so its easier to grab into ledges 3-if u are one block above spikes u can grab into the ledge and go into them witouth diying 4-u can deactivate traps using things like crates, dead eye bats, arrows and more, for things like crates u need to use "down+interact" to grab them and use "attack" to trow them 5-u can cook dead rats and fish in the bornfire, u can do the same with chiken but they need to be alive 6-faries gives u healing bonus on bornfires, rescue them 7- u cant recive damage in the bornfire so if u have a chaos wand use them there 8-at the end of each leven there are treasure chests that u can open with the boss key 9-the 2nd level of each area has an extra exit door that brings u to a secret level/boss fight that grants better loot, u can open it using the boss key and the interact button 10-in coop try to have always an wizard in the team, they can enchant teammates weapons for more damage and reveal/combine potions to make everyone stronger and freeze/stun enemies 11-u can use the poison potion in ur weapons so they cause damage over time 12-use the traps/enemies to help u killing other enemies 13-if u stole items from the shopkeeper and he see u with it and u dont kill him he its going to follow you to the next level, its better to do it in late game 14-poison clouds + fire/lighting = boom 15-u can combine arrows and bombs to make exploding arrows, to use them u need to place them before the normal ones (from left to right on the inventory) 16-u can stole from the shopkeeper easier in coop, u need to enter the shop while him its going out then grab the items and tell someone (who isnt dead or isnt an skeleton) to go trouth the exit of the level while u stay there, do it before the shopkeeper notice it 17-i encourage all mage mains to use quick cast, u can set an spell to each directional and that way u can combo whit them stuning and freezing the enemy 18- to beat the dragon easier u can fight him underwater, and to kill the mushroom golem boss u can use fire/excavation wands or long range spells 19-dash spell +sword lvl 1 increases the damage of the attacks by a huge amount on the knight if u use them at the same time 20-if u use strong background on the houndmaster it gives u trow hard and when u grab an trow the dog u do mad damage 21-the "death becomes easier" increase ur damage by x10 22-having 4 elemental defence makes u inmune to it 23-attack evasion and healing per hit depends on the luck, also the crits 24-u can sacrifice the faries in the bloody lady for more stats

I've played this game off and on since it was first released on Steam, 5+ years ago. It's honestly an underrated, hidden gem of a roguelike/sidescroller. Every time I return to it I gain a little more appreciation for how wonderfully crafted it is. The pixel art is beautiful and evocative. And the balance on point -- it's brutally difficult, but if you spend the time to master the game mechanics, you can become proficient at it. I've managed to beat it once or twice during my 80+ hours played (with the mage). It really is a great game.

Pro tips for all y'all who are gonna buy this game: 1. don't read past here if you want to figure it out on your own. It IS (imo) one of those games where the cryptic, mysterious nature of the dungeons, shrines, items, enemies, etc. is part of the allure. That said, you might not be like me, so you might not care! I will list my "things I wish I knew before I started playing Vagante" items from LEAST spoiler-y to MOST spoiler-y, so stop reading whenever you want. Knowing my ADHD tendencies, this post will probably be of infinite length and I will become less and less on topic over time. By the time I'm at item 7 million, I will be discussing the fall of Constantinople. 2. Chickens can be picked up and brought to the intermission zone and will be cooked. You can eat it for 10hp. The chicken must be cooked alive. I know, right? Brutal! If you cook an already dead chicken, it will poison you. 2b. Rats also give 10hp AND a speed bonus (do the devs think rats are better food than chicken? Scary). Everything but chicken can be cooked while dead, thankfully. 2c. eyeball bats give 1+ tile to sight radius, but no hp. Still useful if you can't get a rat or chicken to the exit. 2d. (blue) fishies give underwater breathing + 2hp. This is very good for fighting dragons BECAUSE.... 3. Dragon's fireballs will dissipate when they hit water. However, some of the water will evaporate every time the flame hits the water (nice attention to detail, right?!) 3. You can summon the stupid wormyboi by killing 3 of his sons, at which point he will ask you to never speak to him or his son ever again (like that old meme). You can also just punch him. 3b. Sometimes, the worms will get killed when an enemy (off screen) triggers a trap and manages to kill a wormyboi. If this happens 3 times, the bigboi wormyboi doesn't care, it's still you're fault and he's a-comin. Listen for the music change if you don't want to get ambushed. 4. You can steal from the shop and kill the shopkeeper. Easiest way is with an item that gives floor/wall phasing. He will check his stockroom from time to time, and will start patrolling the zone once he notices something was taken and attack on sight. Your items will be marked _stolen_ (no effect on stats) and all future shopkeeps will attack on sight. If you manage to exit the level before he notices, this will not happen. Much easier with 2 people. Otherwise you need favorable dungeon layout as well as either phasing or AT LEAST rogue stealth 1+ rogue acrobat 1 (the acrobat is to roll past the shopkeeper as he opens the stockroom door. If you don't roll, it will unstealth you). 4b. You can increase the shops inventory by buying items in the previous levels. It doesn't matter what the price is, it instead goes by the # of items purchased. To increase shop inventory to 3, you need to buy 2 items. So obviously, if you don't need anything, buy a potion or scroll if the shop has one because it's cheapest. 5. The healing fountain can be broken to give back all the coins you've spent on it (+ like 30, I think?). However, you will need to pay it back the same amount before it starts healing again. If there's a health shrine and a shop item you need (and you're a noob and you know you won't be getting far enough to need the shrine's healing), use all your coins to heal up, then break the fountain to get your money back, then spend it on shop. Alright, double prizes! 5b. You can break all of the shrines for a secondary effect. Some are better than others.. some have only downsides (the smith just shoots arrows out I think), and some have both positives and negatives (the scholar shrine will give a spell book if broken, but can no longer be used to exchange scrolls/spell books for the rest of the run). 5c. OH MY GOD I ALMOST FORGOT!! You can throw scrolls into the fire (select 'drop' in the inventory) for 2 extra hp. Spell books give 10hp. You can find a spellbook on most levels, so this is a fairly good source of healing if you aren't a mage (or don't plan on using spells). 6. For beginners, the "+1 perk point, -3 luck" starting bonus is pretty darn good. Luck is fairly easy to get back (and not super important for every character), but more importantly it gets you familiar with the different skill trees. I'd suggest a stealth rogue to start as it lets you move around at your own pace, thus giving you time to scout for traps and attack from the ideal angle. It helps A LOT when you're starting out. Once you're familiar with the enemies and whatnot, try something else! 7. This is totally cheating, but if you save with the book on the lectern by the campfire (in between levels), you can resume the game, test all your potions, see which ones are beneficial, quit without saving, load it up again and then only drink the good ones. This is obviously not the intended way to play, but honestly if you aren't very good at video games, it might be the best choice as this game is kinda hard sometimes! You can always quit without saving and resume your save as long as you quit BEFORE you die. the moment you hit spikes (or die in any other way), your save is deleted. Even if you force quit the game almost immediately, the second you die. I've managed to quit fast enough to reload exactly one time (out of hundreds of attempts). 8. For the mage, DEFINITELY use the "enchanting" spell tree first. Get at least one point before branching out to other trees, although honestly I'd get all 3. If you have rank 3, you can also enchant your teammates weapons (just have them give them to you, enchant, then give them back!). Very fun :) 9. I'm now just realizing that these are absolutely not in ascending order of spoilery-ness like I said they were going to be. Sorry about that! As my apology, I will give you this fun fact: you would think that the fruit 'orange' was named an orange because it is indeed... orange. But that is not the case! In reality, _the color orange_ is called 'orange' because the color is reminiscent of the fruit we call an orange. To put it simply: the color is named after the fruit, even though you'd expect the etymology to work the exact opposite way. Weird, right?! 9b. Also, there IS a word that rhymes with 'orange'. That word is 'sporange', which is a _very_ outdated term for the part of a fungus that produces the spores. 9c. Unlike oranges, there are exactly zero words that rhyme with my name (see above). I've checked. Even wrote a program to make sure and used every rhyming dictionary (of every language) that I could possibly find. Nothin. Oh well! 10. Once you get the houndmaster at lvl 18, try throwing your pupper at enemies. It does massive damage :) 11. You can sacrifice the fairy to the Iron Maiden shrine (the spikey coffin torture device that takes like 30 hp). If you don't need the fairy healing bonus (oh yeah, I forgot to say that the fairies can be brought to the campfire to increase it's healing for the rest of the run), it is very, very worth it to sacrifice it for the stats. It gives you +1 str, dex, vit, and something else, I think? Anyway, it gives you _at least_ +3 stats, and there will be more fairies later so it's ok! 12. You don't have to use the weapon that your class has a skill tree in. A lot of the time, you won't even find one of that type of weapon in the first few levels. For that reason, I recommend against going too far into the dagger/sword/club/fists trees too early on.. especially if you don't have the weapon yet. Btw, dagger tree is dumb, imo. Rods/wand (or whatever the mage weapon tree is) is fine to get early (but get enchanting instead) since wands/rods/whatever seem quite a bit easier to find compared to any specific weapon type. 12b. wand of pestilence can be ignited if you shoot fire (or lightning, I think) at it. 12c. Wand of Digging does solid damage to that pesky golem boss in the forest. Makes him a lot less deadly! 13. Sometimes you need to be careful how exactly you drop the boulder traps. Once in a while, you'll need to drop one on top of one another in order to reach a high up treasure chest. I have found that if there is a treasure chest you can't seem to get to, there is _almost always_ an item you can use to get to it (this can be items with wall/floor phasing, bombs, wand of digging, boots with double/triple/infinite/high jump, scroll of jump, or wall grab gloves. Check the shop and/or look around! 14. ok that's it I'm done 15. Almost forgot... THAT DAMN CONSTANTINE PALAIOLOGOS IS SO UNCOOL! WORST. EMPEROR. EVER.

regarding these shopkeepers in apocalyptic settings... I always assumed they thought of you like some random guy like anyone else, not knowing that you were the one to eventually save the world. Another theory is that there just wouldn't be a point either way. If he gives away his stuff he won't have a livelihood even if the world gets saved so whether he dies or gives away the stuff doesn't matter. He still gets the short end of the stick. However, if he makes a buck out of you and you save the world, he actually wins the game so that's his winning move right there.

Classic roguelike foo of identify, cursed items, and having to drink all the potions once to find out what they are are things that really should of stayed in the past. It made a little more sense in something like Nethack where figuring out how to identify everything without dying was a big part of the game, but here it's just a really obnoxious risk reward thing where the risk, if it's like most cursed item systems, is "You lose the game!", meaning there's essentially no actual system and you're just entirely limited by how many foos of identify you get.

Its pretty neat, but it feels like its missing roguelight elements. Maybe I've played too many roguelights -lites whatever

I bet you could throw the live chicken in the Iron Maiden

your argument about merchants still charging you sounds logical on the surface but they still have "Families to feed" if it were a real life situation. Also if you were a merchant and some random person walks up claiming to be the single hero that would battle all of hell's minions would you believe him and hand him free stuff? I don't trust people that well.
