Yes she’s off in Puccini, Verdi and Wagner. She is better in Mozart and light Strauss despite a rather undeveloped voice.

Only, she has no control at all over her vibrato…and sings loud because she is afraid to sing piano. Always. She had also a very insecure intonation. Many times too high. See Carmina Burana with Jochum, for instance.

Janowitz also sang Mimi. With that perfect voice she could sing anything. Most soprani would kill for that exquisite voice over such a range. There is always passion in her performances without histrionics and unnecessary word-pointing

And yet this did not move me in the least. The voice was pristine, yes, but just too girlish and sweet for this passionate Tosca aria. And here the vibrato sounds a little fast. A remarkable interpreter of Mozart and Von Weber, but for my verismo or spinto repertoire money, I’ll take the a fuller, more dramatic voice, like Callas.

La "potenza" che ascoltiamo qui viene data dal micro, in sala la voce suona troppo secca, non produce degli armonici.
@coraberger494711 ай бұрын
No. La ascoltavo varie volte live con Strauss.

@sergeymedvedev24938 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, she avoided singing foreign music, with few exceptions, and it was right. She is really great in Mozart, Wagner, Strauss and so on, but Italian music requires another style of singing. She was wise enough not to waste her time the repertoire where she would be uncompetitive. But as a little part of the stage concert it's a good gift for the audience.
@wallenstein723 жыл бұрын
In fact, Janowitz frequently sang italian repertoire, if not abroad from german speaking countries. But on stage she sang Odabella (Attila), Maria Boccanegra, Elisabetta (Don Carlo), Aida, Mimì and many times the Verdi-Requiem.

Well, as beautiful of a voice as she had this quite obviously is not her cup of tea. I guess it's really a matter of ones nature. Hers was probably more of a refined kind to be singing Italian repertoire.

It is better here than in Verdi Requiem, but...this fast vibratello is quite strange. Un grelot sur la voix. And her timber is too silvery, not warm.

This is nice, but personally, I prefer the way Maria Callas does this piece. There is something, not so much vocally, but more...more emotional maybe...or just plain different, emotionally, when Maria sings. Whatever it is, and I can't completely explain it. I just know it when I hear it, and this woman, as great as she is, doesn't have it. Not to me anyway. I just like Callas better.
