The valence number and oxidation state are two very important values in chemical bonding and formulation. Thanks to them it is possible to predict the existence or not of certain compounds. Their main differences are:
Valence: It is a real value, without sign (natural number), which represents the external electrons that are involved in bonding with other atoms, and coincides with the number of electrons that a given atom needs to gain or lose to complete its outermost shell. Like oxidation states, an atom can have several valences.
Oxidation number or oxidation state: It is a value given by convention, similar to the valence but taking into account the positive or negative sign. It is defined as the sum of the positive and negative charges of an atom after it has been isolated from a compound.
