This symphony has a sinuous and fluid folding and unfolding through its motifs. Towards the end there is a gorgeous pastoral melody repeated numerous times, always countered by the menace in the brass. As minimalist music, I find it more subtle than the music of Arvo Part or Henryk Gorecki. I find this symphony so moving that I can't stop playing it.

@enriquesanchez20014 жыл бұрын
Sylvestrov's Symphony No. 5 (1980-1982), considered by some[who?] to be his masterpiece, may be viewed as an epilogue or coda inspired by the music of late Romantic composers such as Gustav Mahler. "With our advanced artistic awareness, fewer and fewer texts are possible which, figuratively speaking, begin 'at the beginning'... What this means is not the end of music as art, but the end of music, an end in which it can linger for a long time. It is very much in the area of the coda that immense life is possible.”
@PiersHudsonComposer4 жыл бұрын
I think the idea of the 'end of music' is a fallacy. All previous musical idioms built upon preexisting musical materials, but in a new combination. Music today to no exception. This piece, by placing romantic and serial idioms together, is creating something new: the relationship between these hitherto disparate idioms. We won't run out of music anytime soon.

Silvestrov is probably Ukraine's greatest living composer. He fled Ukraine shortly after the Russians began their invasion. He was born on September 30, 1937. Make sure you listen to his beautiful piece "Prayer for the Ukraine" which he wrote in 2014.
@RuthenianModernism Жыл бұрын
prayer for Ukraine was originally written in 1885 by Mykola Lysenko, Silvestrov created his own arrangement in 2014
@RuthenianModernism Жыл бұрын
@@yowzephyr "Prayer for Ukraine" (Ukrainian: Молитва за Україну, romanized: Molytva za Ukrayinu) is a patriotic Ukrainian hymn published in 1885, which became a spiritual anthem of Ukraine. The text was written by Oleksandr Konysky, and the music was composed by Mykola Lysenko, first with a children's choir in mind. The song became the regular closing hymn in services of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, the Orthodox Church of Ukraine and other churches. It gained national significance when it was performed by mass choirs during the Ukrainian War of Independence in 1917-1920. The hymn was intended to be an official spiritual anthem of Ukraine. It has closed sessions of oblast councils, and has been performed at major national functions.

@@yowzephyr the January 1863 uprising had taken place 20 years before and both Lysenko and the author of the lyrics lived during that time. Lysenko also produced songs for the next uprising (the 1905 revolution). They probably knew it was only a matter of time.

@@RuthenianModernism Thank you! To quote the late, great Johnny Carson "I did not know that." ...So, if you don't mind my asking, what was going on in Ukraine in 1885 that had them in need of prayers? But I suppose that's a silly question. All entities need prayers 24/7, right?

For me this is a wonderful recording, the strings have bite when required and a silky quality when in the meditative sections. The transitions between sections are sympathetically played. However there is something that disturbs me around the 10th minute? Is this correct? Oh for a score. I wonder how other listeners feel about the tuning and the harmonic "conflicts" in its bitonal writing. It has all the features of simplicity but that characteristic is misleading. Serial music? I think not.

+Ken Hannaford Yeah there's a glitch or jump at 10:48. It's on the file so it's not a youtube upload issue. I've listened to other versions of the symphony and it's difficult to say if it's a split-second or a few seconds that is lost...

That's what the true connoisseur has come to know as "Silvestrov's Enigmatic Bit".It all came about in order to gain fame and notoriety-he recognised while composing it that in order to stand out from the crowd these days one needed to go to extraordinary lengths,as practically every conceivable thing had already been tried when it came to the music itself-so he decided to include a bit that sounded like some of the piece had been skipped! "Bravo maestro!",I say to all my friends gathered around.On other days we all cry as one,"Pure genius!".Then on still other days when I'm alone,it's,"That's just silly!".(Hmm,now I think about it there's lotsa people like that when it comes to classical music!).
