Mr. Sterling Hayden era um ator melhor do que pensava - e como escritor era fabuloso! Sua autobiografia, além de bem escrita, transpira honestidade. Sr. Luis Peix, o senhor está certo ao afirmar que o objetivo dele não era o destaque individual, mas a obra final. Ele estava bem à frente da visão comum dos atores e atrizes cuja característica principal era (é) a vaidade. Um homem que viveu várias vidas em 70 anos e buscou a liberdade acima de tudo! Obscuro, pouco conhecido, espezinhado em guias de filmes, este Valerie é fascinante. Feito em 1957, por um diretor sem fama, Gerd Oswald, é uma pouco comum mistura de gêneros: western, tribunal, crime, mistério. E ainda tem a beleza faiscante de Anita Ekberg, três anos antes de seu estrondoso sucesso em La Dolce Vita, de Fellini. Só pelo fato de ser um western que tem como protagonista uma mulher já seria uma raridade. Mas Valerie ainda tem um tom de crítica social, uma denúncia do preconceito contra estrangeiros no Velho Oeste americano, do moralismo hipócrita que leva toda uma pequena cidade a condenar antecipadamente uma mulher suspeita de infidelidade conjugal, e do endeusamento de um homem pelo fato de ele ser rico e poderoso. É impossível deixar de lembrar de Rashomon, o grande clássico que o mestre Akira Kurosawa dirigiu em 1950, e que seria adaptado nos Estados Unidos, no western Quatro Confissões/The Outrage, em 1964. Este Valerie foi feito sete anos depois de Rashomon, e sete anos antes de Quatro Confissões. Valerie não chega a ser um grande filme, na minha opinião. A trama se perde um pouco a partir da metade; tudo fica exagerado demais, maniqueísta, o malvado é malvado demais da conta, e o retrato final de Valerie, a personagem-título, fica um tanto inconsistente. Mas é sem dúvida fascinante, interessante, pouco usual, e começa bem demais, promete ser uma obra-prima. Não chega a ser uma obra-prima, mas é um western muito bom, e um filme de tribunal muito bom. A sacada da mesma história contada em diferentes versões, nitidamente inspirada na obra-prima de Kurosawa, funciona muito bem. E o filme ainda tem um detalhe memorável: trata de um tema pouquíssimo usual no western, a tortura. Tortura, tortura física - essa imensa chaga praticada nas ditaduras e também nas democracias. Em Valerie, afirma-se que a tortura era método usado às claras pela União na guerra contra os confederados. É um filme que, sem duvida, merece ser bem mais conhecido. Os filmes de Hollywood com orçamento pequeno em relação as grandes produções, ficaram conhecidos como Filmes B e no que se refere a este gênero, algumas destas produções se tornaram cults , Valerie é um exemplo, alguns destes filmes b ajudaram a redefinir a linguagem cinematográfica. Having seen many western movie films, from the 30'S right up to the modern day, this is a great film. Not as much for acting but for the story. The soul the spirit of a person returning from, a war where brother killed brother and brothers brother killed their brothers sons. Then and still up to this modern day, war is still torture, for them in it and them returning. If the wives, the husbands, lovers and mothers fathers and children are lucky. War has never brought peace back to the land or peace to them that kill for peace of a land. For the mind remembers, long after the guns and cannon bombs have fell silent upon the battle fields of mans glory, to kill or be killed. The film has a story, if you listen? And if not just enjoy the moderate acting, for its time. The drama to was better then, in the 50's.

The movie is on how doubt like a drop of poison can spoil the entire milk of matrimonial harmony with devastating impact on all involved. A serious theme for a Western with the black-and-white format adding to the grimness of the tale. A well made film with few actors. The over-made up heroine however is an unwelcome diversion to the otherwise mature theme.

Thinking over the plot, once the movie is just now over, I am puzzled by any suggestion that, at the beginning of the movie, anyone could have believed that John Garth would escape conviction once Valerie lived long enough to testify. Even if he had (which did not happen) shot solely to defend himself, a woman whose father and mother wound up dead would be sure to testify against the man who killed them. The acting was persuasive, at least on the part of the four leads, but the initial set-up was fake. But hey, it was extraordinarily interesting, well acted, and well directed; a very good movie!

This is a very un-American movie, made by a nest of the usual suspects. I would exempt Hayden and Ekberg from much of the criticism based on the fact that both were not very bright. Those with doubt need only look into the personal histories of the director and cast. No wonder there was a blacklist! It should have continued, instead of these snakes successfully portraying themselves as martyrs and victims (the way they have for thousands of years, each time being eventually expelled). And naive Americans bought it! And naive Americans have since lost their country AND DON'T EVEN KNOW IT.
