@James H. Val wrote her memoir "Losing It" in 2008 a year prior to this interview..sadly Eddie NEVER wrote his side of their journey. In her book she does agree with you in that they were both too young for marriage, she was 20 he was 26. In my opinion, Val married a musical genius, an alcoholic and later a drug addict. In the book she also admits that she struggled with her own insecurities as an actor but it was mainly her weight that haunted her throughout her marriage. Eddie's world was his band and his music..her world, in my opinion, was much smaller...there was competition for his attention and time. Wolfie only enter their lives after 10 years of marriage and they wanted 4 children, but between tours, records&recordings and an acting career, time did not allowed for that to happen. What did happen was that his alcoholism and drug addiction became rampant with no end insight and rehab failing Val was left with no way out but divorce. This interview was made in 2009..now 11 years later my impression is that Val absolutely loved and was in love with Eddie even as he passed. To be present at his bed side and later eulogizing Eddie by saying " I’m so grateful Wolfie and I were able to hold you in your last moments. I will see you in our next life my love." Says it all..... Some people come into our lives, leave footprints in our hearts and we are never the same..Rest in power Eddie, you are missed.

@James H You have a good point there. VH only toured twice after he married Janie, in 2o12 for ADKOT, which I think was the last album they released and then the 2015 tour. But his career had slowed down by 2001 when Valerie left him. She gave him an ultimatum to get off the coke or its over, and he chose coke. He had nothing to lose and everything to gain by getting sober then, but chose to keep drinking and drugging instead. So that takes me back to my thought that he didn't really love Valerie or he didn't love her enough to save his marriage.

She even said for awhile things didn't go right but she always loved him as he did too. She was with him and their son as he took his last breath. It wasn't publicity. Putting his arm up is body language to block her. Then he gives a cop out answer when asked what he loves about her and says the same thing. And since they were both performers yes, they can make a kiss look good and were frequently coached by their publicists to do so. Read Eddie's 2012 interview in Esquire. He was sober and disses VB in the interview. Men who loved their wives when they were married to them don't put them down in the press years later. I have never seen any interviews or from back then or recent years where Eddie ever publicly stated he loved VB. Read the Esquire magazine interview. Until I see something that says otherwise, I don't believe he loved her and will wonder why he married her.

Here's the thing. Ed only knew music. That is all he did when is was awake. Drugs and drinking just made things worse. Not because he was out with DLR, but because he locked himself in a room an played in every waking moment. Val balanced him. Wolf was his life. Ed was a genius. He didn't know it. He just did what he thought he wanted and needed. He gave everything to Wolf. He wasn't a rotten dad, or husband. I mean, Ed even attended Val's wedding and she did his. Ed was a shy guy. I was blessed with being able to be at 5150 for a couple of days. I was only in La for 3 months and I end up at my idols house. I couldn't even talk to him on the first day. The second day I said I started smoking because of him when I wanted to say I started playing guitar because of him. He sarcastically thanked me. we talked about the indian cigarettes his doc told him to smoke, then he asked for one of my camels. He took me around the place a little bit. He just didn't want digital recording. Talked to me about how the analog realm was much better. And he was right. Still is. Digital has gotten so much better, and in some cases can over shadow analog. Ed had an SSL 9k and it was so big in order to go into the live room, you had to turn sideways to get by the console. I never got the chance to apologize about the smoking comment. I live about a mile from the studio and someone I told this story to said, go hang out at the Ralph's on Cold Water. Ed goes there often. Just after I was told that, he is going to Germany for treatment. And we know the rest of the story.

It is funny....unlike DLR, Sammy never had any issues with Valerie. He actually respected Val. It is never easy being a rock star's wife because you are apart from each other for so long. In some ways it's good to be married to another famous person who is busy doing their own thing, but then you get the People/National Enquirer bullshit. I will never forget a photo of Jan Van Halen (Al and Ed's dad) with Ed, Al and their wives. Edward once said that his mom's HATRED of music and his dad's drive to be a successful musician caused him to drink more and took more years off his life. In the pic you could almost see in Jan's saying, "Now this is what I am talking about, some high hot wives that understand the musician's life and don't bitch about it."

When you spend your entire relationship on drugs it's a little hard when you quit and reality slaps you in the face. They didn't have a chance to see it for what it was, until the end when she quit and was left to fight the drink through Ed and he wasn't ready yet. Shit happens.

She had them 80s smokers teeth. That's how they looked before teeth became so white that they look blue. Always interesting to see people with their actual teeth back then. Hers were nice and straight tho. Not criticizing her, so don't get offended, but everyone who smokes has teeth that color. And EVERY fuckin body smoked back in the 80s.
