@lbputzer3 жыл бұрын
@@sha11235 In the premiere episode of Season 3, they framed Valerie's death (in a car accident) as happening 6 months earlier. After a leave, Dad (Mike) returns to work for the first time and his sister Sandy has been around for most of that time. Having been recently divorced and looking to relocate from Minneapolis to be near Mike & the boys, Sandy decides to move in. That narrative happened within the first 10 minutes of the episode, and then the actual story line of the episode unfolded, which had nothing to do with Valerie's death. It does seem rather cold, but to be fair, it was the only way they could write Valerie's abrupt departure into the story. The producers viewed it as a light-hearted comedy, and didn't have much interest in tackling drama issues like grief and family disruption. Still, it seems almost spiteful that they didn't dedicate at least a whole episode to the family adjusting to Valerie's passing.
@tangoblue2 жыл бұрын
@@lbputzer I think there was also one later episode where there was a house fire and one of the boys was upset because a cherished photo of his Mom ge had kept was lost. Other than those two blips, I don’t believe they devoted any more time to Valerie.

@@sha11235 Partially true....Lorimar DID give in to her salary increase and she went back to work for season 3. She was still unhappy that they were taking HER show away from HER and putting more focus on the David character to capitalize on Jason Bateman’s “heartthrob status.” She was also unhappy with them not realistically dealing with heavy stories/ heavy stories being solved in typical sitcom fashion wrapped up in 25 minutes or worse, in one line. One such case is the episode when David goes joyriding and gets into a crash. She felt that was something that should NOT been resolved in one episode as it wouldn’t in real life.

@@mikekillagreen9432 no. What happened is that Lorimar never signed the long form of their contract with any of the cast. She and husband, co-creators of the show, insisted they do so or they'd walk. The long form is where details about royalties etc are ironed out. Lorimar failed to do so. In the original contract she was due for a substantial raise by Season 3 and Lorimar thought to add to it to appease her. In the meantime Sandy had a pilot deal with NBC that Brandon Tartikoff thought he could write off on the series. Meanwhile Lorimar & Harper had worked out their negotiations and she came back to the show and shot one episode. Later while in a wardrobe fitting for Season 3, she received word that Lorimar had "buyer's remorse" and that they were to go back to how things were before the new arrangement... Thus she was fired. @Edster733 жыл бұрын
@@1Cheytown I'm well aware of that but what I mean is that it isn't just about a demand in higher pay. She was trying to get them to honor her long form contract, something that they kept dragging their heels on. An increase in pay wasn't the real issue. The long form irons out the details with royalties, licensing etc. During the trial, an employee from Lorimar even admitted "it's our policy to never sign the long form", which is highly unethical as well as illegal. Given the issues that other shows have had with Lorimar as well as Miller/Boyett, it's not surprising. The cast for "Happy Days" were treated similarly, although that was with Paramount and Miller/Boyett. Seems it was customary to put off the little details so that by the time syndication profits etc rolled in, the casts were out of luck.
