I think my mom may have a piece very similar in her home! She will refer to it as her hard rock maple hutch. It has that purposeful dented edges like yours, and the bottle bottom glass door! Love how you "quieted" the color as well as the decade it was from. You still have a vintage look, yet it appears current and CALM! Well done VA! PS. I bought my hubby thread checkers from amazon. It is a long wire that contains individual gauges that feature a male threaded stud on one end and a female threaded hole on the other/26 sizes I think. Enabling you to take your bolt, screw or nut and find the size. It also helps you determine the thread count (coarse or fine) and whether it is SAE or metric. It takes up no space really, suspended on a wire about 26 gauges hang from it. He said it has been the best time saving tool he owns. You might look them up on Amazon and see if you could benefit. It will tell you what size drill bit to use/when you learn the gauge size. (nothing wrong with your method...it works right?) CKE nut and Bolt Thread Checker about $25.

"Hard rock maple hutch!" I love it! 😀 I knew there had to be an easier way with the drill bits! 😄 You guys always have the best help! Thank you so much for sharing, I will definitely look into that for future projects, sounds like a great tool to have around!

So glad I clicked on your video. I’m in the process of sanding down some oak dining chairs that resemble pottery barns reed dining chairs. It’s been in the back of mind that sealing was going to be a problem since I didn’t want the darker or “wet” look. Off to Home Depot I go!

RE the correct drill bit size for your drawer pulls: one easy way is to grab a bit that looks right and hold it directly behind and against the threads of the threaded connector on the back of your drawer pull. If you can't see the threads, you know the diameter of your bit is bigger than the diameter of the connectors, and the hole you drill will allow some clearance for them. Now, obviously you don't want the bit to be a whole lot bigger than the connector-that could cause problems like looseness, etc- so now you reverse the positions of the bit and the connector so that the connector is in front of the bit, again held tightly against it. Now you can see exactly how much bigger the bit is and proceed accordingly. Ideally, just a little bit bigger works fine. I learned this during my years of installing kitchens. It's an on-the-job time saver this way, and saving time means getting the job done sooner and increasing both efficiency and profit. Not such a bad thing. BTW, your thrift flip looks great! Nice job!

To get the right size drill bit, place the screw behind the drill bit and all that should be showing either side of the bit is the thread of the screw. Works every time. Not sure if it’s the same for bolts (like your handles and pulls) as they have a different thread and function.

I love how this piece turned out! I just bought a 25 year old oak table, which the previous owners kept in amazing condition. The lady I bought it from said exactly what you said, they don't make them like they used to. The chairs are solid oak as well, but they need to be refinished - which is something I've never done before. I like the look of how your clutch turned out. Do you think that same kind of style/idea would work with the oak chairs? Don't know if you have any experience with oak, but I wonder if I could take off the old stain and sand them and then apply the same waxes that you used here? If you could share any feedback on that idea it would be greatly appreciated! Thank you so much!
@lollylolly81863 жыл бұрын
It should, but until youvstrip or sand there really is no telling. A good white wax or liming wax should help. Perhaps try under the seat til you are happy with the look. Sanding chairs is very time consuming. If they have spindles either hand sand or get some stripper. Use mineral spirits and wire wool to get off any excess goop left on. To save time you could paint the legs or whitewash perhaps? Good luck, they’ll be beautiful.
@ValerieAguiar3 жыл бұрын
I agree with Lolly (above) Sanding in between chairs might be a pain. I've heard of a great citrus strip as well. Sometimes the spindle chairs look really neat black too! I have seen a lot of black spindle type chairs trending. Maybe take a peek on Pinterest for some different ideas. Sometimes oak can pull a red color it isn't a white oak, but I've also heard of bleaching it to tone down the red (if you have red oak) Hope this helps! Lolly has some great tips (above) too! 😉
