Those are some good sounding clarinet players. I'm a section leader of 19 clarinets and about three of them are actually audible at any given time. I'm not sure the others even know their parts, despite the multiple tests and sectionals...
@alwaysvalerierae8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! And I'm sorry to hear that, your efforts are not to waste though, there are many factors that go into having good sounding players (teaching, environment, the player's determination/focus/willpower) so don't feel too down about your section! I'm sure you're a wonderful section leader so don't be too hard on yourself!

Schools have some complete control where bands can practice...When I was in, back in 1973-76, we had our own 50- yard patch of ground in front of the school...same with my daughter ,1998-2002...Now, with school expanding, the current band uses the student parking lot before and after school and uses the football field for final polishing of the field shows...it is really hard for some bands to find enough space to practice marching....

oh my god your band facilities are beautifulI'm so glad that there are schools where arts get more funding!! It makes me so happy to see ~~ you seem like a great DM, too! You were really positive the entire time, which is so great!! Do you have any tips for learning to conduct?
@alwaysvalerierae8 жыл бұрын
Wow, thank you so much! Our district supports the fine arts greatly and we really try our best to take care of the facilities given to us. I'm glad it makes you happy, it makes me happy that you're happy! (lmao) Again, thank you for the compliment! Learning how to conduct is best learned from previous drum majors or your band directors! One on one action is the best and I recommend that over watching conducting videos since everyone has different areas they need to work on. A few general tips for conducting would be to always practice in front of a mirror and mark where your hands should be hitting. I know for different schools there are different styles and preferences so always keep that in mind as your practicing! I always liked to keep a sharp defined ictus and motion of my arms, 4/4 being a distinct arrow, 3/4 similar to a check, etc because it's easier to follow for the band. (again, this is just our band's/my personal preference) I wish you the best of luck in learning how to conduct and feel free to ask more questions if you have any!

TheSoupIsGone yeah my band room is smol 2. We have a “hallway” with the band room, choir room, and a teacher planning and 2 other classrooms. But it’s called the band hallway because no one else goes into that hallway. My band is actually crazy and no one likes going in there. To us it’s home, to them it’s like a mental asylum 😂. Kids are scared to go down there apparently lmao. They ask me how I do it. I’m like, boi band kids are the best. It’s like having 50+ new family members (not for my school, but for the other schools in my area). Yeah, some of us it’s a love-hate relationship, but you can talk to anyone in there.

it's honestly interesting to see how schools and bands are so different from one another. Also, any tips on how to become a drum major with crippling anxiety/social anxiety?
@alwaysvalerierae7 жыл бұрын
Fire Blaze It’s really hard to be a drum major under those circumstances since you have to interact with the whole band but it’s definitely not impossible. Start by getting your body and mind used to interaction with groups of people and slowly try to increase it. Befriend or meet a lot of people in your band, you can do this one on one. There are definitely aspects of being a drum major that is behind the scenes! Let your director(s) know, if you’re comfortable with that, and let them know that you won’t let it hinder your audition! Have faith! I believe in you! Good luck :)

Some schools, depending on the administration support ,totallly blow the band program off and focus on the football /basketball teams...all about the money....Band is EXPENSIVE...many bands have yearly band fees up to $500 / student, and that is NOT counting extra fund raising....uniforms, instrument repair, music, marching instructors for drum and flag lines do not come cheap...the yearly competition show program is a small fortune...material for the flags , the list goes on and on...even small bands, up to 80 kids, can cost about $50,000 per marching season...and that's bare-bones budget...I have been a volunteer for over 20 years..I have fees go from $50 /year...my days....to $500 /year NOW...school districts in my area allow only $2,000 /band a year for budget ...yep....that's it in my area of the State....Back in the day bands were about 120 kids.....now you are LUCKY to get one with 65 -80...on a good day....Bless our music directors !!!

During practices/performances watch the section leader of the battery/ head snare drum players feet, if you can't see their feet, I recommend watching their hands. It's important to establish a secure relationship between you and them for you both keep time for the band and you guys should watch each other so there is never a tear. On your down time, I recommend practicing with this website to ensure your abilities to keep time: bestdrumtrainer.com/tt/ Sometimes you have to always believe/think you're right because your ears will always deceive you! And our football coach does not let us step foot on the field unless we are performing our show or doing the national anthem. We march in a parking lot 99% of the time. Our practice is right after school so we just have to pray that all the cars are leaving but if not we just march over cars. If it rains we have to stack chairs in the auditorium and lay down masking tape for yard lines.

first last drum majors rarely get time to play their instrument during summer band. When school starts, it depends on how your program may do it but they might half it where half the class you are outside working on drill and then the other half you are inside working on region music. It all depends though! Especially if the drum major has a solo in the program as well!
@firstlast-nc8gb7 жыл бұрын
ValerieRae1960 Last year, the drum major played clarinet and she had a solo, but since he plays baritone and trombone, I doubt he will. I hope he still gets to play with us (I kinda have this HUGE crush on him) but whatever happens, this is going to be a great season!

Practice your conducting! Learn what style your director wants! Learn how your sections work/learn the relationships (friendships) between your band members while also learning their names Figure out what works for your band and what doesn't!

This one day at Band Camp... -TBH, I was one of the drumline types. Played BD in the high school, moved on to college and swapped out for SD... all those years, and no regrets. I just wish my school hadn't gotten rid of their band this year-

The first thing the drums have to do is yell at all the people to stop touching the percussion instruments “stop touching your not a percussion player!” So stuck up smh
@aradiaboss5 жыл бұрын
it’s annoying when people touch our shit !! you would react the same way if someone was trying to touch your instrument !!
