As with a lot of the equipment I acquired early on, I wish I'd known more about gas forges before I bought the one I have. Due to its design it won't work for the larger damascus billets I now make, so I will be building a larger ribbon burner forge, which should handle things. There's always something to learn!

a great video, I have a large volume forge, as i make sculpural work that needs a wide variety of shapes. I can get it up to forging temp..... just. with a heavy duty gameco burner. i think the trick is guilitine doors that drop each end.. I can lift and lock at different height the doors. This means I can very rapidly control the amount of exit points for the heat. so saying this i think i do need to build a smaller volume forge next door and swap the burner between the forges depending on the task required. Oh i use fire bricks cemented togeathr with refractory. a kiln shelf for the base to combat wear.

Gas Burners for Forges, Furnaces and Kilns - M. Porter (2004) Book has all you need to build awesome venturi burner and forge dimensions to go with it.There are many books but this one actually works.A large 1 inch burner made in this book can heat up 30x30 cm cylinder when placed in middle (tilt it at 85° so you get swirl).There are also smaller burners.1/2" you can use as a torch with very strong output. I made a playlist on my channel with dimensions,if you read book make sure to read it all since some chapters are connected together.(only bad side of the book.)

thanks for this. it explains things simply. i've got a charcoal forge and made a single-burner gas forge later on, and i think i just got lucky with my design. i read up about it it but nothing put it as well as this. i'll come back to this in the near future, because i want to build a two or three burner gas forge. edit: i need to concentrate on making better doors for my next one. currently i'm using firebricks, and most of them (except the one stuffed in the back) are in pieces.

Great explaination. I made a fas forge a year or so back and wish this info was available at that time. Having said that to ge only issue with my forge is the hard fire bricks in the base. I think these absorb to much heat and take to long to heat up. Interested in your thoughts for resolution but I was just going to cover with a refractory.
@ValhallaIronworks
@ValhallaIronworks Жыл бұрын
You want to have your refractory fairly matching throughout the entire forge, otherwise the heat will flow to one place more than others. Perhaps try lighter brick?

I was wondering why my forge wasn't burning properly. It wasn't even hitting forging temp. Turns out a spider had moved into the burner.

I have forced blow natural gas forge. Forced blowing decides all problems, plus, you can adjust internal atmosphere from oxidizing to reducing, to minimize oxidation of steel. Venturi burners actually sucks.
@ValhallaIronworks
@ValhallaIronworks 3 ай бұрын
I have done almost all of my recent work with venturi burners. They don't suck at all, other than sucking in air during normal operation. People who think they're bad just don't know how to use them properly.

@@ValhallaIronworks Maybe, with proper venturi burner it's true, but i can't find such one in my country. Small centrifugal fan changed the game.

I've thinking about trying to build a steel crucible foundry, I'm thinking a couple of big gameco burners into a 300mm tube with 50mm refectory insides. Reckon that would be enough to smelt steel, or am I going to have to explore the world of forced air?
@ValhallaIronworks
@ValhallaIronworks Жыл бұрын
The large size gameco burners put out a loooot of heat. I reckon it'd probably do the job! Just make sure you have a good lid that also has the same 50mm of refractory and a vent hole!

Just a question can you use clay house bricks to close the end of a 2 burner forge ? .
@ValhallaIronworks
@ValhallaIronworks Жыл бұрын
Good question! I wouldn't recommend it. Theyre just not rated for the temperatures of steel forging and will fall apart very readily. Some even contain moisture which can cause them to explode!

@@ValhallaIronworks what if i coat them with the left over refractory mix ? . just something I might use every now and again. and I will dry them out inside in the aircon over a few weeks. Thanks for the reply.
