I remember reading a history book about an early tribe of seafaring people that never learned how to make maps. The idea of cartography apparently just never occurred to them somehow. It was a very short book. They all just died at sea. Very sad. They would send out their best and brightest to explore the seas, and then would send out more people to find the ones that never came back. Eventually, The tribe was reduced down to just one man. He had been too young to go out on the last voyage, but he had spent his childhood learning how to build a boat. He had one goal: to find all his people that never returned. That young man was named Hiccup. Unfortunately, despite his iron will and determination, the story of Hiccup is lost to history. Clearly, he died because he didn't have a map, but MAYBE it worked out... Who knows?

LOL, one of the things about navigating with no map, use the sky tree sun positions for headings and don't forget that the ships in Valheim drift even when you don't touch the rudder. You are never going straight even when you think you are going straight. to test this set your boat on a course and take your hands off the controls and watch it eventually do a circle. Another tip I discovered was to drop single pieces of wood in the wake of the boat when crossing large water for a temporary "breadcrumb trail" to follow back and forth across the wider expanses of ocean.

Hey Hiccup, when sailing with no map, try and stay close to islands, you can also create small builds to show you that you've been there, or build arrows that point towards home! 😉

We all appreciate our maps just a little more having lived through the last two episodes! The only thing missing was a volleyball. I like the sign idea that quietswan mentioned. Bonfire "lighthouses" would be cool, too. Have a great week, Hiccup!
@theswanqueen40605 ай бұрын
You should put signs up when you make an outpost pointing to home on each adjacent island. Making a chain sign leading home.
@314159vedic5 ай бұрын
That's what we did on our very first playthrough. We had big arrows where we needed to cross to get to the next island in the chain. We also named all the islands which was kind of fun.

Love this series! I couldn't play with no map... how maddening! Also, maybe it's just me but I really feel like the magic food and weapons really ought to show up a bit earlier in the game. 6th biome to get magic?! whew...

I'm pretty sure the wind is pulling your boat off the intended direction Hiccup. Maybe an idea would be to use your build hammer, bring up the menu for a flat post and turn it so it points the direction you want to go. While sailing you can bring up the build hammer which will show the last item highlighted in the direction it was turned to. This kinda makes your build hammer a compass. Maybe use another hammer for building? Idk if 1st hammer will keep it's memory though as I haven't tested that yet.

I agree with everyone here on the no map navigation at sea. When we did our play through, we made huts with signs. We also used the chopping block as a compass. We would point the handle in the direction of home or NORTH and navigate that way. We also used this method to point to a boss location as we were trying to find them. GG and keep enduring!

I think your sailing issues might be due to your impatience. If you want to travel in a straight line, travel in a straight line. Stop using the wind unless it's directly where you need it haha.

When I go exploring I make a track as straight as I can usually east/west and put Wisp lights at decent intervals ALWAYS on the left side of the track. Then, I I do have a Hiccup, I just walk north or south until I meet my track follow the track until I find a few lights, and now I KNOW the correct direction to go to find my boat etc. Up here for thinking, Down THERE for dancing.....

Situations like these makes you wonder how they did it back then, being stuck on a cramped boat for weeks at a time crossing the northern sea

Give names to the islands, you can place a unique item on the shoreline to mark them so they are visible from the sea. "Okay, so i can see two bonfires, so that is two fire island"

I think, if memory serves me correctly, you can turn the no-map thing off in the settings and it will show you everywhere you've been :) Just out of curiosity, when you're done with this playthrough, remember to do that (or if you turn off no-map before the end as per @haakontangvald-pedersen8374 's request) and show us what the map looks like. Or maybe get your wife to log in as you, take a screenshot of the map and post it in the community settings - but be sure that you can turn the no map stuff off again without it affecting your play through before you do that, obviously :) I'm glad you made it home safely, even if you had to die twice to do it!

I was gonna say he needs to go back and watch the episodes before and use the Yygrasil branch to navigate.
@tov87145 ай бұрын
Iirc, his wife could run the /nomap command (twice, btw - once to turn the map off and then a second time to turn the map back on, even though the map is already off. Confusing, I know). Then take a screenshot and use /nomap again. The map should be back to normal and unseen.

I´ve started a hardcore playthrough a while ago and the world tree really helped a lot when navigating. The large split in the branch is nearly above the center of the map, so when looking for the starting point it is goos to take a look at in once in a while. I also built a sundial in my bases, so I could find out the cardinal points. Also a day in walheim lasts 30 minutes - 21 day and 9 night. If you keep track of time, you can figure out in which cardinal direction you are going even on the ocean (when its not foggy or raining ^.~)

At 7:15 and 19:34 you can see the same trees in the distance of the plains. You circled that island 😅 Edit: Oops, seems I'm not the only one that pointed that out and you found the lone tree again lol

Vikings used Natural navigation, costal & landmarks navigation and used solar compass/sunstone to navigate the seas 🌊 If I ever evolve temporary insanity and start a game with no map 😮 - I will install a compass mod. So many things look the same in Valheim. Also think you have to make an attempt on making your own manual map as you go... Good luck!

There's little room for recklessness in a playthrough like this. Your start in ashlands will be literal hell considering this difficulty. And no portals too... Mastering navigation with the sky is vital, otherwise you'd always be sailing in circles. Lastly, you mine faster by hitting directly below you. This would help especially in the mountains. Mining silver while being hunter in that difficulty would definitely crank your adrenaline levels.

Had a thought I think may help. Night last around 10mins or so, the moon travels around obviously but it has a high and a low depending on time, we also have the world tree in the sky. Old sailors would use constellations and such to navigate, maybe using the position of the moon in conjunction to the position of the tree?! I dunno, I haven't tested it but it might be worth trying. Fair tides and favourable winds to you hiccup.

(prewatch:) A humble request from an enthusiastic viewer: Please reset the no-map setting. I hope that is possible without restarting. Getting constantly lost must be frustrating to you, and frankly boring for me to watch. Uncovering the vast map/globe is part of the fun of exploring Valheim. Keep the crazy respawns and raids, that is entertaining, but get the map back. (Now to see what you decide.)
@ChocolateTeapot935 ай бұрын
Seconded. Getting lost is boring and I actually like seeing the map. Alternatively, the map could be turned on purely to navigate back to the base when you get lost but can't be used to exploration. And to keep the difficulty factor, if you turn the map on you have to go straight back to the base and turn the map off before setting out again.
@haakontangvald-pedersen83745 ай бұрын
Yeaaa, you died, and even had to force-die to get home. Map, or coast-circling, island-hopping with celestial navigation. NEVER brave the open sea in fog or at night.
